  1. I agree with Randy and Spade. A lot of academic philosophy evolved into other more specific fields. For instance, philosophers who thought about the way the mind works (people like William James) essentially started the field of psychology, where much of that work now takes place. Now, cognitive science and neuroscience have usurped a lot of the progress that philosophy was making, with different techniques. Basically, instead of just using reason and logic to solve certain questions we have developed additional technologies and tools to get better answers. It's almost impossible now to do
  2. Can you point out where Israel's nose is on that map?
  3. I would have stuck with Jesi. Man, does Zimmerman look racist in that video or what?
  4. They are also not supposed to have guns. The national director of Neighborhood Watch has detailed how Zimmerman broke basically all of their rules. "If you see something suspicious, you report it, you step aside and you let law enforcement do their job," Tutko said. Volunteers should resist the urge to intervene, Tutko said, even if they happen to see a crime in progress, because they may become victims themselves. He tells Neighborhood Watch trainees that "you do what you can, when you can, as much as you can, but if you cross the line, everybody loses."
  5. Yeah we should all quit arguing and get out there and stop some crime!I mean, especially if we are arguing semantics.
  6. I tried to watch it. The local casino that I play poker at is attached to a race track. They really got the feel of these southern california horse gamblin guys down exactly right. But other than that, it took me several episodes to understand each storyline, it was just so hard to hear what people were saying, and it moved really slowly up until the last few episodes. Really not surprised it was cancelled, and it was definitely going down even if speedz had been able to save the horses.
  7. I do not think this word means what you think it means. There is nothing irrational about fearing a deadly weapon. Presumably the only legitimate reason for carrying one is because people are afraid of them, and you can use that fear to compel action without anyone getting hurt.
  8. I'd say Martin's fear of Zimmerman's gun was demonstrably rational.
  9. Yeah, applications are pre-compiled. Most of them are compiled to have "universal binaries" which means the code for both mac architectures (intel/ppc) is included in the same bundle, but since the old architecture is getting pretty rare now, thats not done as often. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taurine
  10. Almost all true, except this is a .app file. A .pkg file is an installer package, which will run and put files in various places on your system. To see the files inside the .app package, you can right-click and choose "Show Package Contents". Can be fun to poke around inside those. (also, you can install pre-compiled binaries on linux. e.g., apt-get install, or some other package manager, so compiling != installing. Installing is the step after compiling, when the executables are put in places they will be found. )Shake can now enjoy the wonders of unix on his mac: the terminal can be fo
  11. Welcome to a world where software doesn't install itself on your computer. You wont miss the viruses.
  12. Performed it too. Original version on youtube. YES!
  13. The Natalie Imbruglia version of Torn was a cover. The song was written by Ednaswap.
  14. Probably never. It sounds like the Imam is basically just renting out the cafeteria for prayer services though; it doesn't look like this is part of the activities of the school in any way, although it could be perceived that way if it is during school hours and the school is arranging this with the mosque, so its tricky but I think this would constitute "entanglement".
  15. Of course it does. It says "this is good and right and we support it". Would the school put up a poster of Hitler? (*)Here is a quote from SC Justice Stevens on a related case involving school prayer: ""Regardless of the listener's support for, or objection to, the message, an objective Santa Fe High School student will unquestionably perceive the inevitable pregame prayer as stamped with her school's seal of approval."The same thing applies to a Bible quote put up on the school wall, it is absolutely hanging there with the school's seal of approval. If the quote contained Hindu theology (
  16. First of all, no one ever does put passages from the Koran and other religions too when this happens. But whatever set of religions you choose, you will not really have all religions represented, and representing any of them is exclusionary to people with no religion. Will you satisfy the Wiccan in the class by adding a Wiccan phrase? Have an atheist phrase too, negating all the others? It's just a can of worms that public institutions should completely avoid. A public institution should have no position with respect to religion.
  17. I don't think anyone claims to have the "solution" to poverty. So someone who takes a political job in a shitty, impoverished neighborhood then becomes responsible for the fact that the neighborhood is still poor 20 years later? LOL. Who is it exactly that "promised" some benefit? You think that the cure for poverty in the inner city is just more republicans in local government? Let's try it out and then in 20 years when south central LA is still a shithole we can then blame the republicans. This is exceedingly silly especially since we already know that the best solution to a bad school
  18. Let's take a look at what you said:"How do you explain that the worst schools in the nation are in places that have had democratic school boards and local governments for longer than 30 years. If they were really helping do you think the inner cities would look the way they do and the schools would be failing so badly. "You appear to be asking for an explanation of why inner cities have democratic local governments. The fairly obvious answer is because they are poor. But really, you are implying that the democratic local governments are causing the poor school situation, or that they are fai
