  1. I question the idea of raising from UTG with AQ. After reading quite a few posts on this forum from people much smarter and wiser than I (especially DrawingDead's thoughts), I have changed my thoughts on playing AQ for a raise. UTG at a full table of tough or loose players (which they seem to be), I probably just fold. This is not the kind of hand I really want to play OOP with 3 callers behind me. If I can call a bet or limp in from late position, my decidions become much easier as the hand develops. Just my 2 cents......and not really even mine, thoughts from others on the forum that I
  2. A quote that I try to remember when playing a big pot in a tourney or live cash game. Phil Gordon says something like this in his book "The little Green Book""Good players dont go broke on only 1 pair" -- Phil GordonIts can be easy to overplay TPTK or something similar and go broke. There are times when it seems like people (myself included) have blinders on when they flop KJ9 when holding AK. Its easy for them to think I have the best hand with TPTK and just bet or call it all the way down to the end. I see this a lot in loose cash games especially.
  3. Sounds like they definitely wanted a call with the $3 raise preflop and the $2 raise on the flop. I would be scared of this hand.
  4. I would like to change up my style of play from more of a TAG style to a LAG style. Are there any good books out there that point out theory and how this should be played? Any advice is very welcome!
  5. Thanks for the replies. I felt that I probably had the better hand at that point. He had been showing down much less than premium hands previous to this hand and was getting desperate. He also had been sucking out like crazy on people to this point, which didnt stop with this hand...... I agree this wasn't a big enough bet. At the time I was wanting to pick up the pot as I felt that he was on a draw, but I didnt want to push only have A high at that point. Thanks for the info. I went in the tank for a while on this one. She seemed to be a very solid player and I hadn't seen her reraise
  6. I hadn't posted anything in a while and was feeling a bit left out  !I played for roughly 6 hours tonight and only mixed it up in probably 15 or fewer hands total. The hands I am showing here are pretty much all I got all night, I was getting terrible cards (kept me out of trouble). Wanted to see if anyone had suggestions. My table image is TAG as I havent played many hands. The table is a little loose with some agressive and loose players mixed with a few tight and very agressive players.1.) Pretty early in the night, MP +3 is not good but has been getting lucky. He will chase a
  7. All I was trying to say is that you are getting a great price for your minimum investment. Are you trying to say that you would need 10/1 or even 20/1 on your money before taking a flop like this? You are right in the fact that showing what odds you are getting against a single hand are not relevant in determining what odds you need to call against 5 hands. I was merely trying to show that even against the best possible starting hand you are only a 4/1 dog.
  8. I wasn't trying to represent the fact that you are even a 20% favorite against multiple hands. I was trying to point out that even against the best possible starting hand for your oposition.......6/1 odds could still warrent a limp. I am not saying that it is a play I would want to make.If I am wrong with something I say, tell me why. People are quick to insult around here......
  9. I am always inclined to bet out with a high PP. If I pick up a small pot, even just the blinds I take down the pot a very happy man. I would much rather win 10 small pots than 1 big pot. I have much less potential to get sucked out on and lose a lot of my chips.Another reason to bet out is to elimintate people with a crap hand. If I raise 5x the BB with AA or KK, I am eliminating 1/3 to 1/2 of the possible starting hands. This helps me when I see the flop come 268. If I didnt bet out, anyone left in the hand could have ANY 2 cards in the deck. If I bet out, I am eliminating 82, 62 and p
  10. Another consideration for making a continuation bet is your table image. Along with all of the other considerations about position and my opponets actions, I will give thought to how many hands I have been playing and what hands I have been showing down. If I have been involved in many hands recently or I have show down small pocket pairs or weak cards, I will typically check and try to get a free card. If I have been folding and playing tight agressive poker, I will make a larger bet and force my opponet to make a tough decision. -- Ryan
  11. Don't get discouraged with people who respond to a post in a not so great manner. Believe it or not, everyone had to start somewhere. I hope you keep posting and improving your game. As to the original post, you were getting the odds to play just about any two cards at 6/1 odds. I like DrawingDeadInDM's thought that playing these cards will force you to make a tough decision on how to continue with the hand. Because the odds were so favorable to you, everyone else is also getting the propper odds to play just about any two cards out there.I would recomend that you just toss this hand like
  12. You shouldn't insult people like this. You should take down their name and address so that you can send them gifts that you buy them with their money. If you want to play only against professionals and great players, you need to play higher limits. At this point you will be even at the very best and dont stand to win much money. I am being a bit sarcastic, but I am thankful that there are enough terrible players out there. I have just started playing regularly and appreciate any donations I can get :-)
  13. I wish my bank roll was that high, but luckily it was a $5.00 SNG tourney. So the lesson learned from this post is that nobody worries about a set over set. I had heard that before and just wondered what everyone else thought. I would like to know what people think would have been the correct betting amounts, a few posts earlier said my betting was weak. I am always looking to get better, so what do people think?Stack sizes (approx):Hero: 2500Villian: 2400
  14. I dont think it is an easy lay down, but when the raise comes off after the flop I am thinking that there is a good possibility that I am beat. The possibilities:- A set (QQ or 88)- The player is overbetting his AQ Once the turn comes A I am getting worried that an AQ makes two pair. This situation all depends on the context of the table. If it is a loose table making big bets routinely, I would be more inclined to call and see how the river card plays itself out. I would be on guard either way.-- Ryan
  15. I agree that the 2nd bet out there could have been a little stronger, but my reasoning was as follows:Before the flop came, there was roughly $650 in the pot. After the flop comes 245, I fired $500 at the pot. After getting called the pot is now $1600 or so. The next card comes a 6 so I fire another $500. I was a bit surprised by the $500 call after the flop and though about the possibility of a draw to a straight or possibly A3. At this point when he called, he was down to his last $1000. Obviously he was playing the fact that his overpair was good, I dont see how overbetting the pot s
  16. Do you worry about someone having a higher set when you flop a set?Delt 22 on the BB. MP1 raises to $300, folds around to me and I call. Flop comes 245 offsuit. I bet $500 and get called.Turn comes 6. I bet $500 and get called.River comes 9. I bet $500 and get raised $500. I call and he turns over 99.I figured I had it locked up since he probably didnt have a straight with a 3. The craziest part is that I read in a book by Phil Gordon the other day a quote that went something like this:"I never worry about someone having a set greater than mine without a pair on the board. The odds are
  17. Thanks for the reply ChrisOfSpades. I think your thoughts are absolutely correct. Against a good player, a big raise like that from a player with a tight agressive image would be a definite tip to my hand strength. In that situation, I bet at the pot about 90% of the time with anything other than complete garbage to try and pick up the pot right there.I guess the major lesson learned here is to try and just pick up the pot with a bet or hope someone picked up a good hand as well. I dont know why I changed the style that I normally play, as I am usually very content to take down a smaller p
  18. I tend to throw almost any hand away in the face of two all-in bets. The odds of me winning the hand just dont make it an easy call for me (call me crazy). Many times I have laid down JJ, QQ, and AK knowing that I can find a much better spot to make my move.I would much rather get all my money in the pot when I am much more sure that I have the best hand!
  19. I have to agree with everyone here. There are just too many hands that have you covered in this spot. I have found that in my experience, I would much rather pick up 10 small pots than 1 huge pot. I would toss the hand and wait for a better spot. Something I have been burned on many times:call before the flopcheck callcheck callBIG BETWhen they come alive, it tends means they have completed a hand. Think about it from their point of view. You bet at the pot every chance you had, does it seem like they would think a bluff would work a good percentage of the time? I sure wouldnt risk all o
  20. I wish I could claim some great poker genious for this play, but all in all it just didn't feel right. This player hadnt been playing a lot of hands and I had been able to make agressive continuation bets on the flop to move him off his hands. This was combined with the fact that I had been burned twice in the previous hour by making plays that seemed logical but didn't feel right. I told myself that I didnt care what the play was, I would lay down a hand if it didn't sit well. The guy just seemed to come alive with much more than a probing bet or something that was meant to merely pick up
  21. Here is the situation:2 table SNG $5.00 + $.50. I am in early/middle position with the 2nd big stack and pick up AA. The blinds are $75/$150. I make a raise of $500 (last time it was folded around to me when I made the same play with KK). All fold to the SB who calls and BB folds. Flop comes A63 rainbow. He checks, I check behind him hoping he will catch up a little. Turn comes 5. He bets $200, normally I would raise but something just didnt seem right so I call. Next card comes a 10 with no flush possibility. Guy raises $300 and I call. SB turns over 47 offsuit for his straight.I a
  22. This is just my 2 cents worth and is my first time posting, so please take it easy on me :)Here is what would run through my head:What hands am I behind with? - Any pocket pair (22 - QQ). Although it is a small margin, in the long run it is unprofitable. Any A or K on the flop is likely to kill any action after the flop, lowering your implied odds if the raiser has a small pocket pair.- Any large pocket pair (AA - KK). I am much further behind in these situations. What hans am I ahead in? - Any suited connector (54, 76, 98, etc.)- Big Aces (AQ, AJ), I am way ahead- KQ, KJ, and QJ (althoug
  23. That is a great thought! I think I might write that down :-)
