cophagen, denmark - me and gus hansen go at it!

Recommended Posts

Needless to say at only 19 years of age and 18 months of poker experience I was not expecting much going into the main Event of the European Poker Tour in Copenhagen. The prize pool was announced abouthalf an hour in and it was said to be close to 2.1 million danish kroners. I made a big laydown early with QQ. The board was 2/2/7/8 and I was facing a big bet from a man who re-raised me pre flop. I thought very very hard and folded, (I was quite happy when i saw him flip up AA). Time progressed and our table was being closed so we drew for new tables. I drew an ace of spades which is my favourite card! This must be a good sign! I must be going to a good table! Well, I drew table three and there was something special about table three. You see sitting at table three was Dave "Devilfish" Ulliot and 3 time WPT winner Gus Hansen. So much for ace of spades being goodluck! I actually wasn't too upset though, i was honoured to play with these poker greats and I got involved in a very big hand with Mr. Hansen. With blinds at 150/300 the player under the gun made it 600 to go. Gus hansen called from late position and I took a look at my cards in the small blind. I looked down at A/Q hearts and with 3850 chips left I figured I needed to make a move. I went all in with the intention of stealing the 1200 but not really sweating a call as I was 90% sure I had the best hand out there. The raiser folded immediately and Gus went into the tank. He thought for over 5 minutes staring me up and down and finally announced that he would call "Just for fun". He flipped over A/J clubs and I must say I was completely elated. We took a flop and I almost jumped out of my seat when I saw a jack, but phew, there was also a queen!! So with the board Q/J/3 rainbow and I was very readyfor a much needed double up. That was until BAM like a haymaker in the face the river hit the most ruthless Jack i have ever seen in my life.I couldn't help but scream and Gus proclaimed, "that was sick, absolutely sickening". I shook his hand and that was the end of it. Overall I thought I played well and really did not get any decent hands to play with. Oh well, if your gonna go out might as well go out saying that World Champion is one lucky bastard! Thanks for listening guys and don't be afraid to drop over at pokerstars and look me up. AceSpades11 is my name! Cya around

Of all the great players, Gus Hansen might be the one I'd most like to play with. You got your money in with the best hand, and that's all you can do.Congrats at least for being able to play in a big tournament :D

that's brutal my man, you got gused. Sounds like a great experience though. Great job on laying down the queens. May you make more tournies and lady luck smile on you better than she did this time

Yeah, you couldn't do much different. If you triple the original raise, that's 1800, and half your stack is in, so going all-in probably is the right play. You got in with the best, got help, and then yeah, Gus did what he does. Congrats on making that event though, that's cool.

I was really suprised at how down to earth and nice all these pros are. They don't mind the attention at all. Raymer was also there and the Hendson mob, it was really cool to see so many greats. I look forward to watching the final 18 tomorrow and playing in the $1500 buy in later in the evening. But it's 6:45 am here I gotta go to bed!... this 6 hour time difference is killing me!

wow thats got to be a mixed blessing. Cool you got to play against Gus and the devilfish. Bad you got knocked out of the tourney. Still that had to be too cool. So I guess the good outweighed the bad huh?
