bankroll for a full time 7-stud hi/lo player?

Recommended Posts

I consider myself quite the 7-card stud Hi/Lo specialist. But I was wondering the bankroll you should have in comparsion to the stakes for stud? I know people suggest between 200-300x for Hold'em. Just wondering if anyone would think differently if I was to only play stud.

Great question as I do not really know for sure. What I do know is that there is alot of $ to be made playing stud h/l and it is really actually a fun, thinking man's game. Just wondering where is your favorite place to play it?

I've read some place - though I forget where - that a proper stud bankroll should be in the range of 500 BB, due to the fact that more streets and betting rounds exist in the game as compared to hold'em.With that said, for a skilled player, Stud represents a significantly lower variance game as compared to hold'em, so if you are good enough in Stud, a 500 BB bankroll would be far beyond what would be needed.Check out the Stud forum here on fullcontactpoker to check out a good discussion on Stud H/L and why it is considered the most skillful high stakes game around...http://frankiepoker.blogspot.com/

It depends. I've heard arguements both ways. One suggested that the variance is lower due to split pots and it being a game where specialization can make a huge difference [Men Nguyen with his 7-stud prowess for example]At any rate, I personally would say it would be slightly larger than Limit HE just because of the additional betting round and ability to bet double on pairs etc. Plus it also tends to see alot of raised betting rounds which could further add to your variance.I would bump the figure to about 500xBB - 650xBB for 7-stud hi/lo.... but that's just my opinion. I don't play high enough limits to see drastic swings in my 7-stud 8 game.... so I'm just making what I deem to be a comfortable bankroll for myself.

Finally, a question that's not related to holdem, lol. Stud hi-lo is one of my better games. However, I don't really like to play it online. First of all, the lower limits are a waste of my time, and the higher limits tend to have players making few mistakes. And even the higher limits are still pretty low. Casino's are a great place to play. Los Angeles casino's in particular. And during the world series they used to have a great 50-100 stud 8 at the Horshoe. That game was so incredibly juicy. Stud Hi-Lo can be played with a kil or without a kill. That is a factor in determining what your br should be. In addition to that, I would need to know what limit you're playing, and how good you really are. If you answer those questions. I would be more than happy to give you my advice. Good Luck.
