How do you deal with online poker?

Recommended Posts

I posted this as a response to another post. However, I wanted to get some opinions on what you guys (and girls) think about this. Any suggestions. I am a relatively experienced poker player (5 years playing 2 years hold-em). Just looking for opinions on what works for you. In other words, I feel that I can win consistently in live games, whereas I feel that I often fluctuate when playing online. No real question, here. Just trying to stir up conversation and looking for some comments/help. Thanks. here is a portion of my post I mentioned:You really summed up how I felt after a 5 hour session at the Borgata in AC last week. I live about an hour away from AC and play quite often. Poker has actually become a part-time job for me and I was getting tired of the commute back and forth to the casino 2-3 per week. So, I began to really concentrate on the online game for the past month or so. This past week, the only game I could get on (VERY LONG WAITING LIST) was $6-12 limit. I will play anything from $4-8 to $10-20, depeding on availability of the games. I sat down for 5 hours, played in a total of 10 hands that were not my blinds, won 8 of those hands. Buy-in was $260, got up with $610. Now, I have had much better nights financially than this. However, this was one of my happiest poker sessions, also one of my shortest. I felt like I was in total control! I only played premium hands. If I did not hit the flop, I would then resort to my reading skills and use my rock-like table image to my advantage. Anyway, that was last week and I have played much better online since then. For me, the bottom line is that I feel that I am a slightly better live player than online player. However, I feel that I am a good online player. Unfortunately, I have more "TILTY" moments when I am playing online. These are usually due to playing over my bankroll and not knowing when to get up. But most of all, I think that my real achilles' heel is playing multiple tables online. This has been great for me a few times, but has been REALLY BAD for me even more times! I think that I will post this as a separate topic to see what some of you think about this and if you have had similar experiences.

Instead of making maybe one mistake on the next hand live you can make 8 mistakes while multi-ing. You really have to be tilt-free to multi effectively.

Get a very quick mental routine together where you can shovel off the negative thoughts. I'm a big believer in visualization and similar routines, they are truly effective when used properly. (Of course every now and then the cumulative bad beats get to me and I get grouchy lol)

That's just part of online poker unfortunately. You play so many hands per hour you are going to see more frequent tilt moments; even more so if you are playing multiple tables.Bottom line is, if you can't manage your tilt moments at once table you shouldn't play multiple.Bankroll management is also more crucial online and explicitly so when playing multiple tables.

I don't play multiple tables. I am not good enough, it is as simple as that.Smash made the comment that playing multiple tables increases your tilt factor because instead of seeing one hand 30 seconds after a bad beat or misread you see 4 hands 2 seconds afterwards. This is just one problem I have. I am also subject to multiple misreads leading to bad calls or bad laydowns. I have to focus on one game at a time to play my best, I have to watch every hand everyone plays with full attention. If I miss the fact that "showemdanutz" has shifted gears and now is playing every hand as fast as possible I might laydown my nut straight when the flush card comes and he bets his second pair because he knows I am at 3 other tables. One day maybe I will improve to the point where I can play multiple tables but for now I will stick to being a net-plus player at one table.-ill
