The Division of Gaming Enforcement accepted what it deems a completed application by The Rational Group on April 10. That kicks off a 90-day time frame for the state Division of Gaming Enforcement to compete its investigation of the company – deadline July 9. That report then goes to the state Casino Control Commission, which has 30 days to decide whether to accept the application. There is no easy way out: very powerful forces sit on both sides of this issue, so some influential people are going to be very unhappy with the result. While the state agencies are tasked to make the decision, Governor Christie’s authority is such that the up or down vote will surely be taken as a referendum on him. If the bid is accepted, there will be outcry about whether the state is overly loosening its famously stringent regulations to make way for a foreign company that offered Americans a chance to play online poker in a time of murky legality.
