Just guessing, but I think so too. I think actually he's had the Leafs on his radar for a long time, and he may have already been leaning this way for months/years. I cant even imagine how many back channel questions have been asked of the Leafs franchise by his agents, asking about Babcock/Dubas/teammates....all of it. If his agents are worth the 5%? (maybe more/less), then they have already presented him with months and months of data on where the teams lie, what the hockey would be like, what life would be like. The thought that this decision was made this week, I just dont buy it

He's a very realistic fan in all regards, but even he today is on cloud nine. Hell, I would be too. This is the biggest movement in hockey I can recall in a really long time.

I just got a call from one of my friends who may be the biggest Leafs fan I know (yes, maybe even bigger than Serge), and I was sooo happy for him. Im kind of bummed I cant slot the Tavares name into the Canes lineup, but so happy for friends like him. This team is going to be so much fun to watch, and he's a season ticket holder who has watched A LOT of crappy hockey over the years, deserves this. You too Serge!

Why do the numbers shock you? He's going to be the 2nd highest paid player in the NHL, he isnt better than McDavid? Maybe SJ offered more, but its only another 7mill, when youve already made 200mill not such a big deal im guessiing if the difference is where you really want to live and work.

Ideal fit. They have the assets. They need to do something after losing JT for nothing. I kind of agree with you on the overall part. Hence why I am really hoping Carolina is in on the ROR list of suitors, good fit in Carolina too, and we have the assets too.

Not so much next year, but Im really curious to see how the Leafs 2019-2020 roster and cap will look. I am not for one second suggesting they should not sign Tavares, but I am curious to watch Dubas do his thing with the cap that year, when Nylander+Marner+Matthews will all be on new contracts, and JT will have a cap of min 10mill, if not 11mill or more

They're going to be really disappointed that height is one of the few things DRyan has in common with JG TBH,while I think they overpaid for DRyan, I actually quite like his game. And if they can somehow fit in that salary in their 3rd line, that could be ok. But thats a lot of ifs, and this will prob in hindsight be an overpayment

Yes, usually getting a bargain is a good idea when buying something. lol I assume you meant waiting on the bargains that come from deals later on with players who dont get the offers in the first few days. It would seem to be pretty clear that a good idea is to stay away from UFA's, beyond suddenly acquiring a top level guy you would have paid that much for anyway, ie JT. So, Im pretty sure Carolina will sign JVR to 7mill a year for 7 years. FML
