I haven't heard any real substantial speculation, just all the rumours flying around (and there are plenty), but one thing I wonder is who is actually willing to be the first to sign a deal under this new CBA and set the precedent?Again, I don't actually know if someone is close to signing a deal when the signing period opens, so this may all be moot, but doesn't it seem like everyone would be pretty hesitant to sign before everyone else?(Question meant to be rhetorical. I just thought that this is an interesting dimension to what is sure to be a frenzy once players start signing)

The Leafs are going to sign Scott Niedermayer to the league maximum which is going to be a great move. How could getting the NHL's best defenceman be a bad move? Also, getting a break on the Owen Nolan fiasco is huge.

We just got that O'Neil character; if we obtain Foote and Forsberg as speculated by rumors I will seriously wet my pants; where does it say about Niedermayer?
Well, aboout 200 players will be in Toronto if all the rumours are true, so many of them ain't gonna pan out. With O'Neill, the Leafs now have:Sundin - $6.8 millionBelfour - $4.5 millionMcCabe - $3.4 millionKaberle - $2.3 millionKlee - $1.9 millionTucker - $1.6 millionO'Neill - $1.5 million*Berg: $1 millionAntropov: $1 millionStajan - $0.8 millionBerg and Antropov have been qualified at those figures, I believe, not sure if that's what they'll sign for. I don't know off-hand if the Leafs have qualified their other free agents (Belak, Kilger, Pilar, Perrott) or if some of them will be qualified tomorrow, they're all at the Stajan level or less.* Sportsnet is reporting O'Neill signed for 2 years at $1.5 million/year, which seems really low to me (if Carolina had qualified him, it would've cost $2.8 million), but that's the figure we've got. Anyhow, that's somewhere around $25 million for 10 players. That leaves $14 million for the another 11-13 players, which means there isn't a ton of room for more top-priced players, so figure at most one of Foote, Forsberg, or Niedermayer will be in that bunch. Instead, I expect a lot of them are going to be guys willing to take a pay cut to play in Toronto, who are looking to restart their careers - two names that keep coming up are Allison and Lindros.Edit - oh yeah, and the O'Neill signing makes me think that Gary Roberts is going to re-sign with the Leafs, he and O'Neill are close friends and I'm sure that's part of the reason for O'Neill agreeing to the pay cut. Figure then Joe Nieuwendyk will also stick around in that case, and the team is starting to fill out pretty well.

I read about Niedermayer in the Toronto Star on either Wednesday or Thursday. Don't expect Forsberg to come to Toronto. He wants to play with Naslund and Marc Crawford is trying to lure Forsberg to Vancouver, while Forsberg is trying to get Naslund to go to Colorado.Although if Forsberg/Naslund were to both come to Toronto, ummm, wow, my gosh. Yeah, too many rumours going around right now. Thankfully, Toronto is a desired destination for many NHL'ers. We'll find out starting tomorrow who really wants to come here!

It's funny, but this year more than any I can remember, all the local media are speculating about this player and that player coming to their teams. They've just given up on being objective and are basically reporting on wishful thinking.I've heard Niedermayer is a strong candidate to go to Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary. My roommate, who is from Vancouver and is the most obnoxiously biased person I've ever met in my life, truly thinks that Naslund will only play in Vancouver, that Forsberg will join him, that Niedermayer will join them, that Kariya will join all of them, and all of these guys would be happy to play for next to nothing simply because Vancouver is a nice city. Only this time, that's what all the Vancouver newspapers are reporting! It's been like that all over the country. Sure, players would love to come back to their home towns and play, and they would be willing to take a little less than they could get elsewhere, but they're also professionals who don't exactly dislike making money. They've spent a year not getting a paycheck, they signed a new CBA that practically gutted them, and a significant percentage of their salary will be tied to revenue and therefore not guaranteed. I'm pretty sure they will still be happy to take the money and run.

Rumour over here is that Forsberg want's to come to the Rangers with Naslund. But the Rangers have said they are going in a youth direction. This will be their test.

The Sabres just cut Miro Satan loose, I'm hoping this is an effort to save money on him so they can bring in a couple of big-ticket free agents. I'm not lamenting the move at all, I just hope they spend some $$$ and get a couple of guys that will sell tickets. One thing that really surprises me is the Sabres are giving Tim Connolly another chance. The kid has enourmous potential, but has never lived up to it (and spent most of the last season on the injured list). Hopefully he can get it together this season, I would imagine it's his last chance. The Sabres are extremely deep in goal (Martin Biron, Miki Noronen, and Ryan Miller, who will probably move up to back Biron this year), they have a lot of young scoring talent, even without Satan (Daniel Briere, Chris Drury, Maxim Afinogenov, Ales Kotalik, and Derek Roy, who tore up the AHL last season) and fairly young/unproven at Defense. That's where they need to spend some money and bring in some new blood, especially since team dog Alexei Zhitnik kicked himself to the curb last off season by refusing to accept being the team's second highest paid player. Nothing made me happier than hearing that he wouldn't be back, soooooo overrated. I CAN'T WAIT FOR OCTOBER!!!

Also: Bobby Holik from NYR to Atlanta, Glen Murray resigns with Boston. Sean Mcheachern from Atl to Boston, Mike Rathje from San Jose to Philly. If everyone stays healthy, Philly has a pretty rude defense. Does this take them out of the Neidemeyer running?

Oh nooooooooo Hatcher on Philly will make them unbeatable. He is a kind of defenseman that will make it very hard for the Leafs to beat them :club: not that we have :D

Reports are that Mike Modano is staying put in Dallas, probably a good move for him although they're going to be in a pretty big rebuilding mode fairly soon.

  • 7 years later...

Bit of a tough read with the old forum font, but its interesting to see the signings of 8 years ago..

Steve Yzerman resigned by red wings for one year..

Most of those players arent in the NHL anymore, sad to see one of them actually passed away.
