first try at online poker

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about depositing $50 at fulltilt, and i was wondering if any of you guys had some recomendations on what limits i should start at. I can play all forms of hold 'em. I was thinking i should start a .05/.10 but is that the limit or the blinds. Should i play pot-limit, limit, or no-limit to start out? When should i move up limits? I consider myself pretty good at SNG's when can i start playing those? At what stakes? Can i play MTTs? How many times the tourney buy-in should my bankroll be?Should i purchase some kind of statracker? Where? How much is it? Any responses would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

$50 is really too small to build a bankroll at fulltilt, because the smallest limit games they have is .25/.50 and NL is.05/.10, both of which you don't have enough to overcome variance. If you're going to try this though, i'd suggest the .25/.50 limit tables...100bb is short but the tables are pretty soft. About the tourneys/SNG, i wouldn't try them until I at least double/triple the $50, and then start at the $5 sngs. Good luck

what other sites do u recommend then? Which one's have limits small enough for a $50 bankroll?
Pokerstars has smaller limits and 1 and 2 dollar MTTS which u could afford.

You might try Ultimate Bet. They have .05-.10 limit as well as .01-.02 limit. I started there with a $50 dollar bankroll and have doubled that in about five weeks. $50 is kind of a small BR but if you play smart hopefully you will build that up. As for a stat tracker. I use Poker Tracker. I have found that it helps you by showing you what hands your are making money on and what hands you should throw away.Good LuckOrville

Where does one purchase poker tracker? How much does it cost? Is it worth the price?
Do a forum search for it.I believe it cost like $60 or so.People on here swear by it. I do not use it I keep track the old fashioned way. (Excel)

what limits should i play at poker stars?
With $50, you can pretty safely play .05/.10 limit and .01/.02 no limit. Also stud and omaha, regular or high/low, as your preference allows. They also have $1 and freeroll MTTs, if you prefer tournament play (though you have to do well in two big tournaments to cash in the freeroll). The $1+.20 sit n gos are also in your price range, but that's a tough rake - probably a better idea to wait until you're in the $100-$150 range and play the $5+.50 sngs. The $1+.20 are good for clearing bonuses, that's about the only reason I can see to play 'em.

Go to pokertracker.comI've only had it for about two weeks but I would have to say it is worth the $55 I paidOrville

Newbie here....have played a lot of $.25/$.50 NL online.I've improved a lot, still have tons to learn, but I think, with PATIENCE and DISCIPLINE, I can play winning poker. That is to say, I think that I would come out ahead in the long run (emphasis on "with PATIENCE and DISCIPLINE"). I believe 100% in playing within (or perhaps just slightly beyond) your comfort level. Too low stakes = boredom = bad habits. Too high stakes = scared poker = BUSTED.My question is, at any given level (in this case $.25/$.50), how much of a bankroll do I need to overcome variance.? (again, assuming that I can play winning poker). Thanks in advance for any advice.

I play at pokerroom.com and I think 50-75 dollars is an okay starting amount. If you are an experienced live player, it is plenty! Start at the 5 dollar singles and work your way up. Top 3 out of 10 place in the money so that should be very obainable for an experienced player

I've played poker for a long time and always held the position that I hated online poker, so I did what you're talking about doing. I deposited $50 at FullTilt a while ago. I started off playing .5/.10 NL/PL Hold'em and Omaha 8/b, and .25/.50 Limit Holdem, Omaha 8/b, Stud and Razz. If you're decent they are pretty soft tables especially if you're comfortable with other games like Stud or Razz. Generally the lowstakes players playing those games are clueless (I've had a guy showdown a full house in Razz and then ask how this game was played since he couldn't understand how he lost).Anyway, $50 isn't technically enough, but if you're doing it just to try it like I did you can get away with it. I've been turning a consistent profit and I could probably afford to play the higher stakes now, but I keep playing the low stakes just because I'm not really try to make a lot of money, its just for when I get the urge to play and can't get a live game.
