Every year I like to look back and see if I can learn from what has transpired over the months, and 2009 was a very telling year for me as far as poker is concerned finishing the year down roughly $1100. I learned a couple of valuable lessons as far as where I should focus my efforts in the future. The first thing I learned is that I should stay far, far away from limit poker and I need to get much better at online poker. Those two areas account for all of my losses. Sticking to my new found knowledge, I finished the last 2 weeks of the month UP $1100 (as of December 12th I was down $2200ish) playing $1/$3 and $2/$5 No Limit Hold'em. I also need to play more tournaments. So, going into 2010, my goals are:1. Play $2/$5 No Limit Hold'em one day a week at the local casino with the target of cashing out a profit of $600. This puts my poker income goal at $30k+, though my "realistic" goal is a tad smaller at $24k to account for losing sessions. My endeavor will begin January 4, 2010.2. For online, I am going to pull a card from Kid Poker's deck and give myself a little challenge. Put $25 on PokerStars.com and turn that in to $1,000. I am going to start at $.02/$.05 and work my way up in stakes with a goal of 500bb before I can move on to the next level. If I drop below 500bb at any level, I drop down to the appropriate stakes and work my way back up. I think 2 months is a good goal as a time frame goes. I will start this adventure on January 17, 2010.3. There are a couple of casinos around here offering a plethra of tournaments every week, so my goal is simple here: play 2-3 tournaments a month. My goal in each tournament will be to final table and to play accordingly. So that is that. Feel free to post any goals you may have, or comments you feel the need to make. I will keep updates on my progress as the year unfolds.

i posted a long asre thing on Pokerroad about my goals and plan for this year, ill repostt it here tonight. I like the idea of being goal oriented thou, and telling people my goals/ rules/ common mistakes/ problems i keep having,... therefore if i say get caught by someone on here playing a superturbo (thye are like crack to a crackhead) hopefully one of y'all can yell at me!! lolok so here they are:Goals:1.) play the PR HU round robin and cash every now and then, im on FTP and im just putting some on for that so what is left from what i put on to play this, im going to try and grind in some either LHE or buyin short for .01-.02 and build a tiny roll up to be able to keep playing PR stuff on there and hopefully many months down the line have like $200-$300 dollars on there2.) get my NLHE ring game solid and build up my roll, personally i used to think (for some strange reason) that poker would be easy and i could just sit down and win instantly,.... FALSE! It takes a crap ton of work and frankly experience to start to get a good feel of what you are doing, regardless of the game, it takes patience, experience, time, and the final thing is some intelligence, but frankly that is overrated imo in the micros3.) keep playing lots of $1-3 MTT's, they are kind of easy to grind and as long as some of my big hands hold up, i see a decent chance to kind of break even for the most part with a few FT or very very deep run every now and then, hopefully i can build my BR up from cash games and play off like 50% profits from sessions to lower risk of dry spells and frankly to take some pressure off min cashing. (i will stay out of $5 tournys until i either have $600 or am playing off of profit that was at least twice as much, like ending up a buyin from 25nlhe, and only if i am up all round)4.) put in much more hours, looking toward next semester i should be able to build a good schedule where i can set good chunks of time aside for poker, not just doing it when i get the chance at the end of the night, frankly playing poker after working all day and having to wake up early has thrown myself way out of whack with my sleep schedule. I hoping to find 10-12 hours a week, not a ton, but enough without radically changing my life.5.)--this kind of goes with #4--- be more schedule/ regimental about my life. I seriously think i have ADD, and it doesn't help make life less stress-full when i have to scramble and burn the midnight oil to catch up, normal every day life, and frankly poker, is plenty of ups and downs, no need to add more on top of that6.) eat healthy this year, being frantic and running from here to there (and not sleeping well) i tend to eat at weird times, and usually not the healthiest things, not going on a diet, I already work out and play tennis, just wanna eat decent, more fruits and vegs, good for the mind7.) Play in a small WSOOP, a FTOPS, and 2 MiniFTOPS events, hopefully satty in, but if i must i will buy in. 8.) set aside one night a week (probably a lighter night) and play 2-3 hours of mix games. I need to work so much on the hi/lo games, draws, and frankly regardless of my BR i'll stay in the micro mix game for this whole year, just to make sure i feel sound in the games. This probably means once a week i'll post a few hands i totally donked in all kinds of games, so hopefully this will keep some discussion on those games going. 9.) save up all my FPP and Fulltilt points until at after miniftops near the end of the year and get something nice or try and satty into a huge tourny10.) PLAY ZERO HYPER TURBOS!!!!! NONE!!!!!!!11.) do a blog once a week about my progress. this will make me stay on the wagon about everything, and will keep me honestIf i can follow this plan, i expect:A.) my BR to grow + at a substainable rate over the long runB.) to allow me to be a lot more on top of my life and stay a lot more relaxed all around bc I hope to remove the cause of most of the stress in my lifeC.) to maybe one day feel like i dont totally suck at poker,.... yaaahhh!!!Great thread, i usually don't like new years goals and thought it was somewhat steriotypical, but this really made me think about what simple things i could/should do and I like it.

Try to learn limit poker. It will definitely help your NL game.Don't play for results. Play for a certain time limit and leave.

I "know" limit poker, I can win at it... I just feel it counts more on "rushes" to REALLY win money. I play it when I am waiting for a no limit seat. I disagree entirely that limit will make your no limit game better. At the local casinos most of the limit players play it more as a "slot machine" game. It takes more skill to break even than anything. No limit is soooooo different from limit as far as betting structure, strategy, starting hands, and chasing draws. I have seen GREAT limit players go broke playing no limit, calling all-in bets on flush draws/straight draws. In fact, when I play LIMIT more like no limit, I usually fair better. Limit is also a showdown game as very few pots are going to end before the river card, so you HAVE to have a hand. I find that playing to win, rather then playing for a certain period of time helps me concentrate more.
