home poker game setup

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. Ive hosted alot of home tournies from 5-50 dollar buy ins. They are usually about 10-15 people. Weve always had a good setup to have them last about 3 or 4 hours. Soon however, im gonna be hosting a tournament with a 100 dollar buy in and 40-50 people. No ones wants it to be a quick tournament. Were starting at noon so it would be alright for it to go 12-15 hours(were all fine playing till 3 in the morning). I have no idea how to set a tournament up with this amount of people so it runs about this length. If anyone has hosted or been in a game like this id appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

Pretty simple really...just start the blinds REALLY low and make the rounds REALY long. Make sure you have plenty of chips...you are gonna need a lot of chips for the lower denomination blinds. Then you gotta have more chips to color up as needed.

when you're designing your blind structure, you want the big blind to be equal to the starting chip stack at around the time you want the tournament to finish.so if you want a long tournament, do this:1. start with deep stacks relative to the blinds. major buy-in tournaments start with 200 big blind starting stacks, some do 100 big blind starting stacks, some even do more than 200 (the wpt bellagio had 50k starting chips with 25-50 blinds, that's 1000 big blind starting stack). i would suggest starting at 200 and making the first jump double the blinds.2. keep the levels long. 30 minutes is a good length, so is an hour. with only 40-50 people and an aim to end in 12-15 hours, though, i would stick to 30 minutes.3. if you're having re-buys/add-ons, keep the first (or first few) level(s) extra-long to accomodate.so here's a blind structure i might recommend...starting chips: 10,000.level lengths: 30 minutesbreaks every 2 hours.level 1: 25/50 blinds.level 2: 25/50 blinds.level 3: 50/100 blinds.level 4: 50/100 blinds.(end optional re-buy/add-on period, take a break)level 5: 75/150 blinds + 25 ante.level 6: 100/200 blinds + 25 ante.level 7: 100/200 blinds + 25 ante.level 8: 125/250 blinds + 25 ante.(break)level 9: 150/300 blinds + 50 ante.level 10: 175/350 blinds + 50 ante.level 11: 200/400 blinds + 50 ante.level 12: 250/500 blinds + 75 ante.(break, color up 25 chips to 100 chips)level 13: 300/600 blinds + 100 ante.level 14: 400/800 blinds + 100 ante.level 15: 500/1000 blinds + 100 ante.level 16: 600/1200 blinds + 200 ante.(break)level 17: 700/1400 blinds + 200 ante.level 18: 800/1600 blinds + 200 ante.level 19: 900/1800 blinds + 300 ante.level 20: 1000/2000 blinds + 300 ante.(break, color up 100 chips to 500 chips)level 21: 1500/3000 + 500 ante.level 22: 2000/4000 + 500 ante.level 23: 2500/5000 + 500 ante.level 24: 3000/6000 + 1000 ante.(break, phew, 12-hour mark)level 25: 3500/7000 + 1000 ante.level 26: 4000/8000 + 1000 ante.level 27: 4500/9000 + 1500 ante.level 28: 5000/10000 + 1500 ante.(break)level 29 and up are identical to level 28.this structure aims to end around the 14-hour mark (starting chip stack is the big blind).also, since there will only be 50 * 10000 = 50000 chips in play, the average stack heads-up will be 25000, and the very last level allows 25 big blinds in the average stack, a good number for fast but still skillful heads-up play. i don't like to increase the big blind anymore than that, otherwise an average of 12.5 big blinds per stack heads-up is just a total crapshoot.let me know if you disagree with any part of this structure or have any questions.good luck,aseem

Just to be a pain in the ass.Bellagio this year started at 50/100. I guess it was 25/50 last year... which would have been sweet.

50 * 10000 = 50000
I realize I'm an asshole, but it's 500,000. I know you just left out a 0 though. Just felt like maybe clearing this up with one of the clueless lurkers who doesnt notice the mistake.

when i think about it again, i don't understand one thing...with 25/50 blinds, they can use 25 chips, and it makes sense. also, the starting stack is deep.if they wanted to make the starting stacks shallow, they have two options:1. double the blinds.2. cut the stacks in half.why double the blinds when the blinds are easiest to start with using only one 25 chip as the small blind and two 25 chips as the big blind, and almost every major tournament starts at the 25/50 level?also, wouldn't cutting the stacks in half also match the starting stack to the buy-in? wasn't it a pain in the ass thinking about the prize pool and the chip stacks at the same time (since the starting stack was 50k but the buy-in was 25k)? cutting the stacks would solve that problem.wonder why they decided to double the starting blinds instead of cut the starting stacks in half...aseem

oh yeah, good point, thanks.so the final heads-up average stack would be 50 big blinds. this is even better, IMHO, as you can actually have quite skillful heads-up play.if you want to speed it up, add a few more levels and make your final level have a 20,000 big blind so that the average stack goes down to 25 big blinds.i would really love the 50 big blind stacks heads-up, though. it's personal taste.aseem

Thanks akishore for your reply. Im very grateful for the detailed post. Im like you, I would love to have heads up average stack to be 50 times the big blind. That looks like a pretty good structure that will allow for some good play. I think ill run this by some of the players and see what they think. Thanks again. Also, what are your guy's thoughts on a payout structure. I would have top 5 getting paid with 1st at about 35%. However some of the guys want it to be spread out among the top 10. This just seems like too many for me with only 50 players.

payout structure is just personal preference, and if you're the tournament director, it's really up to you. that said, you should usually listen to the players.if the players want a more spread-out structure, e.g. top 10 get paid, you should do that.maybe something like this? top 9 get paid...1st - 25%2nd - 20%3rd - 15%4th - 10%5th - 10%6th - 9th - 5% eachaseem

How does this looks? I had to rework it a little as to not have 25 chips to make it a little easier:Starting chips: 10,000. Level lengths: 30 minutes 10 minute break every 2 hours. Level 1: 50-100Level 2: 100-200Level 3: 150-300Level 4: 200-400(Break)Level 5: 200-400 (50)Level 6: 300-600 (50)Level 7: 400-800 (100)Level 8: 500-1000 (100)(Break, color up 50 chips to 100 chips)Level 9: 600-1200 (200)Level 10: 800-1600 (200)Level 11: 1000-2000 (300)Level 12: 1200-2400 (300)(Break, color up 100 chips to 500 chips)Level 13: 1500-3000 (500)Level 14: 2000-4000 (500)Level 15: 3000-6000 (1000)Level 16: 4000-8000 (1000)(Break)Level 17: 5000-10000 (2000) Last levelAlso im trying to figure out how many chips i need.im starting with:6-1000 Black5-500 Blue10-100 Red10-50 WhiteSo for the beggining i need 500 reds for 50 players. The worst case scenario would be that i need 275 more for color up right? That would be if everyone is still in and had an odd number of white chips(i know this is very unlickley but i just want to know if i calculated this right). Thanks
