Time-adjusted Bankroll Strategy

Recommended Posts

I've just been canned from a crappy retail store (not too upset) and I don't feel like starting the job search over the holidays. One bonus is that I have a large advantage over the absolutely TERRIBLE guppy/fish players at my local casino. Most of the 3/6 lhe games are in between loose and tight, BUT are very passive and profitable. My plan is to start job hunting again after the holiday season instead of now.I've been recording my results for the past month at GW casino and they have been good. I don't feel I can use them just yet as a factor in this equation because the sample size isn't large enough... still, though, from experience we can safely say that I have 'at least' a 1.5 / hour (big bet) advantage.Added information:-I will be playing about every day.-I will be playing for 3 hours a session at least... most likely more-I can drop down to 2-4 if things get bad, but ... ugh... the rake is a killer in that game..... on the positive side, the people might even be a little worse (more broke people scrounging up cash so they can gamble)-My starting hand selection, style, play, w/e you want to call it.... is determined by the table I'm at when I sit down. I'm comfortable with most speeds of play, and my leak is taking drawing hands too far using the excuse that the pot is too big. At least, that's what I recognize in my game right now.Ask any questions you need and I'll be happy to provide the information, but my question is:What size of a bankroll and what edited bankroll strategy needs to be put in use for one and a half months (and any advice going with the information I gave about myself would be wonderful)?I know that a bankroll is an on-going, time-ignoring ideal, but what train of thought is needed for adding in those constraints? My normal feeling at the lower limits is 150-200bb, no discussion, and needing more when moving up in limits. But what is the variance / possibility of ruin over one and half months worth of time? What are the inputs needed for that equation anyway? Thanks for the help and I :club: br discussions.

If you can find passive games and play tight pre and post-flop, you can probably get by on 200bb at the 3/6 game you describe as long as you won't have to dip into it to pay expenses. If you have to take money out of the initial 200bb, your risk of going broke will increase substatially. You can play tight profitable poker on that roll if you don't push marginal equity edges and your opponents are passive enough to let you draw for the correct price and call you down when you take the betting lead. That means you give up some long term profitability by not raising with draws and marginal made hands when you have an equity edge, but you decrease your swings in the process and protect your bankroll. You still call when getting 4.22-1 with your nut flush draw, but you shouldn't raise when you have 4 opponenets trapped for another bet as you normally would. You are giving up profit over the long run, which is never really a good thing, so I'd rather play with a full 300bb, and more if you need to pay expenses out of the winnings/roll.

I honestly think you can get by with 100 BB or less at a crappy live game like this. You should be able to make something like $9-$12/hr, I think. Make sure you've read SSHE and know what you're doing and you should be fine. I would also set a stop loss limit if you're gonna play with a short bankroll though. Something like 25 BB per session, just in case you start running bad, you don't want to tilt off a huge number.

Speaking strictly for myself, I'd need a bankroll of approximately $1 million to make living at 2/4: $400 to play on and 999,600 to invest in a mutual fund.

My poker library is decent-sized (SS2, ToP, SSHE, Dan Harrington, Scott Fischman, Mark Blade, Joe Navarro... and for fun, Anthony Holden's books, James McManus, Tiltboys, etc... plus a bunch of other gambling books) and I'm sad to say that I JUST finished SSHE recently. The book is the best for these limits, and I find myself going over the hand quizzes while waiting for my seat in the casino. Plus, studying this site and others does a ton and I've finally found good value and purpose in reading all the hand history threads.Funny, though, with unemployment checks coming in (just as good as rakeback) plus the edge that I have while playing... I could finally finish college online on the side... maybe... after the 4 years of studying this game I'm finally ready to try it again...................................... ah, you know... youthful minds with limited responsibility and cheap rent. you've all heard it a million times :club:
