Heads Up & Messing It Up!

Recommended Posts

ok, probably should not be complaining too much, but in the last month or so I have got to the last 2 in MTT SNG's 4 times, and have managed to win just 1. I have noticed I have been pushing a bit too much (i know better than being passive) but has anybody got any useful tips regarding this part of the game?

Your strategy HU in a sng largely depends on the size of your stack and your opponents stack in relation to the blinds. Also the style your opponent plays. If he's tight, you have to bet aggressively. If he's aggressive, you have to be a bit more patient in the SB, but also be willing to make looser calls/reraises in the big blind, since you will be ahead of his range a lot of the time, if he's open raising every hand. One rule of thumb, if you like, is if you find yourself with 7 BB or less heads up, if you plan on playing a hand, shove.Other than that, experiment. If you find a particular HU style annoying to play against, try playing that style. See why it works and what defenses your opponents use against it.The biggest key to success in a HU situation is having a solid read on your opponent. Know when you can bluff him off a hand, when he's likely to bluff, what second best hands will he call a big bet with, etc... Also try to figire out what your opponent thinks of you. Does he think you're tight, aggressive, manic, calling station? Try changing gears if the blinds allow to fool your opponent. Finally, if you continue to always take second in HU matches, look at the size of your chip stack when you got to heads up. Are you always trailing? If so, you have to start taking a few more risks when it gets down close to the bubble, all the way down to heads up. Don't go crazy, but trying to muscle up a few more pots could make a big difference in your results.

I have been playing a bit of HU recently, trying to improve my game, and, especially at low-to-mid stake MTTs, position heads up can be huge. Some of the lesser players make it easy for you when your on the button, as their strategy is so hard wired into them, they don't mix it up enough, and this is easily exploitable, never more so than when playing HU. On the same basis, try to mix up your own play a lot as well.
