  1. Let me put it this wayOnline it's very common to log 1,000 hand breakeven / losing sessions in a few hours. That's standard. If you're playing say 30 hands per hour live, that means what takes an online guy 2-3 hours to suffer through will take you basically 33 hours. Now if you're logging 4-6 hour sessions, then of course it's not going to be rare to log several losing sessions in a row. Hell many winning players have breakeven/losing stretches of several thousand hands. If you were to translate that live, then, well good luck. I just explained this concept to some guys I play a home game with. They were telling me about some fish they played with. He's a fish because he lost "every time" they played. I asked them how often they played. Once a month for about 3 hours a night, and they've been having games for about half of a year. LOLOne problem is that you're defining success based on the arbitrary duration of "sessions," when a session is simply a finite unit of time convenient for you. Instead you have to worry about making the right decisions, and doing your best not to tilt when you're not profiting from those decisions. When the results begin to effect your play, and you're tilting, then you imo should step away from the game.
that is funny...once a month, 3 hours, for 6 months...but really, i'm not defining success...more so failure..in sessions.....however, truth be told, even though it's "sessions"..it still feels like a lsoing streak after 5 times in a row...lol...gonna go play tonight maybe...:club:
  2. Thanks true ace...i'll check that out. If you dont mind me asking, what's your downswing? I had built up a profit of over 9gs playing 2-5, but now, after taking my 1100 loss online, and my numerous losses in a row live...i've lost about half, to the tune of 4300. Quite depressing...but i have noticed that some of the losses have come in all-in pots where i was getting paid over 3 to 1 on flush draws that didnt hit...i guess that's variance for you...but i would say at least 30% of the loss is just due to piss poor play..espeically online..

  3. Ok, so i started playing poker regularily this year....I've played occasionally on and off for the past 10 years, after playing quite a bit for about 6 months. I was prone to tilt, so I decided to just play sometimes (having kids/wife does that to you).So after reading up, and always following strategy these past 10 yrs, i decided to play reguarly, part time, and try to treat it like a job. Playing 2-5 mainly at a local card room, I was off and running for the first 3 months. I only had a few losing sessions, so I felt I was a favorite in the game, but I do admit, the sample was small. Just over 120 hours played.Recently, I started playing online..Im not dumb, I know online is a completely different beast. Most live players would like to think that both live and online players have their strengths and weaknesses, and in the end we are all equal, but I'm not one of them. I believe that if you stick 5 online players and 5 live players at the same table, the online players will do considerably better. So, I tried the online game, but it brought out my tilting tendencies. So after going bust online, I decided to leave it alone for now. But now, I havne't won playing live since....i've lost 5 straight sessions. The first 2 sessions that I played since trying online, I lost, probably due to my new found aggression playing 6 max, which carried over to a full ring live game, as well as tilting (which i never did this year). So I fixed that...but still losing...I'm still up for the year, a good amount, more than I hoped for when I originally started....but I'm just thinking....how bad do losing streaks run? Is it a normal occurance to lose 5-10 times in a row? And when ppl say, take a break....how long? I mean, if i only play about 2-4 times a week, how long should I stay away? Most of this post is rambling...I'm just looking for some advice on how to deal with these losing streaks.....some unique advice never heard before that works for you...if possible. Thanks.

  4. I partially agree with this. My 3betting was not to induce folds. Although it was great when they did. Also my 3betting was pretty much only preflop, I rarely if ever 3bet post flop which is a huge leak I was aware of, I just didnt fix it.My 3betting is typically very very narrow, QQ,KK,AA sometimes AKs depending on position. Because no one folds at the 5nl tables, it would make more sense to open up my range a bit and 3bet a bit more, include TT,JJ, AKo and even AQ depending on table and person to get them to come into the pot for more money. Open my 3bet range a bit wider if I am on the button ect... None of this I was doing beforeWhen I usually play and I do a 3bet more times than not they would fold, only people that would call had really legit hands. Those I usually won with my cbet or I knew when the A came I had to c/f, or I could tell when they hit their set ect.., but i found I just wasnt winning enough money with my monster hands.Last night because I opened my 3bet range a bit more, I was getting called by the small pocket pairs, Ax and other garbage hands, because even though we went to show down and they saw that I was willing to 3bet with a AQ, they were willing to come in at an even wider range, in hopes to try to get me. i was also 3betting flop's and turns more, instead of just calling. When I hit a hand I just kept betting/reraising were as before I would just call.So where yes I agree with your statement in general, for me it is a big step because I am actually trying the whole 3bet concept.Kosin Trouble
are you playing 6 max? i'm wondering, 3 bet range..should i be 3-betting with AQ off in 6 max, 25nl & up? Or is that just trouble? I'm trying so hard to play online...i'm a better live player...but i keep tilting...jumping into a bigger game is so damn easy, u can't help but chase...
  5. http://www.gamblingsystem.biz/books/2p2NL6max.pdfThis is a pretty great primer on 6max if that's what you are insistent on playing. Are you trying to play with a HUD or looking up your opponents in HEM as you play?As for sample size, I won't consider even taking a shot at a limit above where i am until i've got a positive winrate over 20,000 hands at my current limit. The rake is essentially unbeatable below $25 NL though, so you're probably wasting your time so low.
I'm using the HUD...i'm just getting familiar with it...not even at the point of analyzing my hands....thanks for the link, i'll check it out.Last night, i decided to start of playing $25NL, and for some reason, I was trying so hard to keep my VPIP under 20 through out the session....after the first two hours, i kind of snapped and lost 2 buyins. So, instead of quitting for the night, I decided to try $50NL. I was going to try $2, $5, $10, $25, $50 and $100NL. Insted of paying attention to my VPIP, i decided to watch other ppl stats and play my normal game. I hovered around even for about 1hr or so, then went on rush where i floated quite a few pots and bluffed the turn. So I was able to turn the $50 losing session earlier into a $100 profit one. I even 2-tabled $50NL, and it was comfortable. I played about 200 hands of $50NL, and 200 hands of $25NL yesterday. I'm going to continue at $50NL for now, and if end up losing, I'll drop down until I find a spot where I can win. I really dont want to play less than $10NL, cause i feel like i dont get excited enough. $50NL, the pots are big enough, and I enjoy 6 max compared to full ring. My VPIP for the $50NL session actually was 29, which I think is not too tight or loose..wouldn't u say?
  6. thanks everyone...and i'm really not sure how to play 6 max yet...i've loosened my game up a bit too much...i'll tighten up...i'm use to full ring live, where i'm normally tight agg, or maybe semi tight agg....i'm gonna play a 25nl session tonight when the kiddies & wife are asleep...we'll see how that session goes..lol..it's taking forever to get the 600 bonus back....i think i've earned like 2.00 or something..i also got rakeback too with raketherake.com - as per naked cowboy said above.....

  7. your sample's too small but that VPIP is way too high.there are two steps when analyzing poker statistics (or any statistic obv). one is to identify what the statistic literally means. to do that you should check out HEM's glossary. http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/388/Stats+Definition+for+Report+TABthe second is to interpret the statistics. HEM attempts to do this for you a bit, by telling you what the average scores are, and pointing out your shortcomings (like "VERY HIGH PFR"), but you won't be able to do this on your own for the most part. you'll need to post numbers and sample sizes and let more experienced users tell you what's up. it's very important that you understand the significance of sample size. in baseball, you wouldn't judge a batter's 's ability after 20 or 100 at-bats, would you? in poker you need an even larger sample simply because, in the majority of hands, the player under scrutiny is not involved.
so what would be a good sample size? 1k? 5k?i am soooo bored playing 1 cent 2 cent, even 2-5 cent. i tried multi tabling at these limits, but then i felt i wasn't playing optimally, so i'll just stick to 1 table. i think i will just start playing 25nl like i originally planned (1 table). for some reason, i've ran into quite a few over shove bluffs with gut shots/flush draws (about 3 that i actually caught, and more that i probably didnt catch)....weird...
  8. you'll only need the lowstakes version of HEM, which should save you some cash.tips depend on what you want to use it for. Are you looking to play with a heads up display or just have a tool to review your stats and big hands later?the first time i installed HEM it took me something like 20 hours to get working correctly, most of which was my fault. there are a lot of quirks with installing it, but having a completely updated operating system (hopefully windows 7) and following the instructions super closely will help. there isn't as much of a front end guide, but the troubleshooting section of their website is great.
i got it working...can you tell me what stats of other players i'm playing with will help me? what should i be looknig for? also, these are my stats currently:Hands397$-$10.45 (this is playing a mostly .01/.02 and 02/05 cent, 6 max)bb/100-49.47VPIP%40.3 (is this too high?)PFR%31.2PFR/VPIP Ratio77.53Bet%17.2vs 3Bet Call%57.14Bet Range6.7Sqz%7.1Agg2.19I'm really trying hard to use this tool, but i dont really know what to be looking for when i see other ppl's stats, other than vpip (which indicates loose and tight right?)....any help is appreciated, plus links to good tutorials..thanks regardless..
  9. uhm he had a straight, and he was praying we had a10 kinda hands and will easily call. i call the turn all day and then fold to huge bets and call small bets on the river all day, if we wanna bluff catch we let the aggro hang himself. i hate the turn raise, and i hate the river call.
No, he didn'tbut i agree with the turn raise being -EV
why is the turn raise bad? it helps me avoid big river bets (against most players), and get away from the monster hands when he re-raises.....plus it charges the draws...true, when i'm beat, i lose more $$, but against two pair or better, its most likely repopping me on the turn and i can fold, and if i'm called, i can assume most of the time it's a draw and play the river accordingly...but what are ur thoughts, besides letting a bluff hang themselves?
  10. still killing it huh?..well, i haven't played live since the 800 loss...no time reallybut i have started playing online...playing 1 cent 2 cent 6 max...ppl get so angry online..lol...anyways, i'm using hold em manager..and for the sessoin i'm in, 182 hands, with a vpip of 41..is that high?it says41/33/47/16.71.8/688/183these are the defaults***dammit..i was 2 hands away from leaving table - trying to reach 200...anyways, i get QQ all in against JJ...flop J, turn J...lost all profit + plus 1 buyin....that's over $4.00!!!.lol

  11. http://www.raketherake.com/?refer=RTR34188Use that to get rakeback at full tilt. Rakeback is absolutely imperative if you're going to be playing that low. The site has very easy to follow setup instructions, so go there before you download fulltilt to make sure you get signed up properly.I believe full tilt will credit your first series of deposits to your initial sign up bonus as well. If it doesn't happen automatically, you can email them and they will adjust it.Rakeback at full tilt is going to be more useful to you than the VIP program at pokerstars for a cash game player starting out until you start playing major volume. If you were a tournament player, i'd say probably go with pokerstars. PM me if you have any questions or post them here.
Cool..thanks a lot. I was leaning towards full tilt, but that porsche looks nice on pokerstars...lol.Any tips for holdem manager?
  12. Ok, so I'm taking the plunge online...I'm trying to decide whether to deposit on PokerStars or Fulltilt. Both have the $600 bonus, but I think Pokerstars lets you deposit in 3 seperate times within 90 days, but with Fulltilt, you have to make one big deposit of $600. Also, I understand Fulltilt's rake and how you get your deposit back, but I dont get how Pokerstars VPP works...Should I also sign up with a rakeback site? I have no clue about that. I dont plan to multi table at first, and I will be playing $25NL or lower. I will be using holdem manger, but I'm trying to find a good tutorial, but I can't seem to....Can anyone give me an feedback for all my questions above..? Thanks...y'all been a great help since I started playing again regularly in January 2010...

  13. good point. I'm usually nervous buying in after a good run b/c odds are an overset or bad beat is right around the corner. Not a good feeling when you know you owe $$ to the luck fairy.
Yesterday, i lost 800 in about 2 hrs. So stupid, i was hovering around even, and then just like that, literally donked it off...2 hands...I dont know why i played those 2 hands like that....the 1st one, i went all in against 4 other ppl with a flush draw and pair.....and the other i shoved (bluff) over a loose aggro - but i could've picked a better spot for my last 400. Do you ever have days like that anymore? Where you play so bad, that you know you shouldn't be calling/raising/shoving, but you do it anyways?
  14. Try to realize that KT etc don't show up here nearly as often as T8 or 88 as far as made hands turned into a bluff. That particular line, when it is a bluff, is almost always some sort of whiffed draw, because the turn call is "well he's ahead but I can catch up and get paid." Hand like KT aren't going to do that because they have to call soley to bluff the river.... and if KT calls bc he thinks he's ahead... it's unlikely he's going to do anything on this river but pray for a check down. I'm not saying his bluff was planned, but it was likely he realized the ace was a scary card when it hit the river and had an "aha I can STEAL! moment"
    Makes good sense...... :club:
  15. you really think he is calling the turn to bluff the river??? i mean your the one with the reads so only you can answer this, but when an aggro villain starts just calling i get pretty scared to be honest bc it is usually out of character
we're not entirely sure he is super aggro, because we've hardly played with him...i dont think he's callng to bluff, but i think he's calling on the turn with a draw...obviously i know what he has....i tanked for a while, and decided that he must want me to fold, which i was correct in assessing...however, he didnt have a flush draw, he turned over 10-8 suited. so he made open ended on the turn, and he basically had the one top pair hand on the flop that i could beat. maybe he put me on diamonds, and once the ace hit, figured i might have the nut flush draw and caught the ace, and was trying to push me off my hand. he ended up losing another 600 before leaving.the table went a little crazy with "oh what a call"...but im not sure..cause he easily could've had k/10, q/10, j10...i'm not sure if calling here is optimal in the long runon an other note, i lost 800 today..in basically 2 hands where i played like a friggin bird...so mad at myself, but at least i knew i was playing bad and just left....2 hrs only..lol...years ago, as long as i had $$$ left, i was playing on..
  16. HUD stats...30/8 refers to VPIP/PFR, which means 30% of the time he voluntarily puts money into the pot (not as the big blind, since that's compulsory), and 8% of the time he raises preflop. Interpreted as a loose/passive player preflop.
does the 8% refer to every hand dealt to him, or 8% of the hands he decides to play preflop?
