  2. Saba,Yeah that was me with the tens, I loved that hand! Thanks for the compliments, I don't know if I'm great but I'm studying the game as much as I can to try and get better. Anyways, it was good playing with you as well, nice to talk intelligent poker with someone.I am heading back up north tonight, I'm not moving down here until August so I'll miss you on the home game, however, I would likely be interested in playing in the future. I am not sure how to PM so my email is greggabe@hotmail. Shoot me msg and I can get in touch when I move back down here. Plus you can keep me updated on that game.I think that Cuatro may be right. The players at these games may just be so bad that they really are beatable. And once I did get a stack the game was pretty easy to play. That rake is still absurd though and long run I still question the game. I'm gonna make a 2+2 post on this topic as well and see if more people there have experience with that structure and what they think.

  3. Thanks guys,I agree that this structure is retarded. It was the first time I saw anything like it and thought maybe I was the crazy one b/c plenty of people seemed to love it. I thought maybe Commerce or the Bike was different but unforunately no. I'm not sure what to do. I am moving down here and I love playing live cards, I like online as well, but the live players are generally looser and more readable. But this structure is crap, and all the LA strucutures seem to mimic it. SabaAba I think you must have been sitting on my left last night, b/c you kept saying how it was the tightest table you'd seen. It was tight when you sat down. But a $15 raise should take down the pot most times when the BB is $3, that's 5x the BB. Like a previous poster said, $10 should be the standard raise here but that is just a pot building bet in this game. The thing is my friend, who is also a decent player, says he regularly cracks that game as well. B4 Saba sat down the table was pretty much insane, and for a NL game it was very easy to get TPTK paid off for a $150+ stack. I just don't know what to make of it. On paper it seems awful. In practice maybe beatable? Screw it, I can sit around and play poker in my undies for 100bb and have some room to manuever I guess.

  4. I played at Hollywood Park last night and it was one of the stranger NL structures I've seen and I wanted to get peoples opinion if they think this can be a good game. $100 Max Buy in, but once you are down to $50 you can rebuy up to $150 (I guess this makes it a little better but I'm not too sure).Blinds $2-3I sat down in a brand new game and everyone had $100 stacks. Standard opening raise was in the $15-20 range. This was crazy I thought, a std opening raise of 20% of your stack? Then after the flop one bet and you're pot committed. So everyone was going all in quite often after the flop or at least by the turn. It made for a WILD game, people calling down w/ pairs of twos, K10 paying off Ak for entire stack when king hits stuff like that.I played pretty much lock down poker because you couldn't bluff many players and your whole stack was likely to be wagered on any hand. This was successful in getting me a double up after I had rebought to $150, so at that point I had $300. Once I got some stacks and had room to manuever the game was a lot easier to manuever around in. So I guess it can be good if you are fortunate enough to get a decent stack of chips. But you have to risk your whole stack several times to do it. Isn't it better to chop out a lot of pots when you aren't hitting monsters? The other problem is the $5 rake. $1 comes off for Jpot before the flop and then on the flopp $4 rake automaticallly comes off. So in limp pots when there is a little $10 pot it becomes $5 real quick. What do you guys think? What about Commerce, and the Bike, do they have different structures?

  5. Great to see some phans on the site. My friends and I tried to get some tourneys going at Coventry but they ended up being 3-4 way matches just between us. Wish we would have run into a few of you guys there. I loved being at the last shows but I hate the damn huge festival shows too much chaos (especially getting in and out). After Cypress I said I'd never go to another big one, but had to catch Coventry. Anyways, if we could organize a Phish Phan Tourney I'm in. I'll even get good and baked b4 hand to give you guys a chance :club:

  6. I agree with the last part of Akishore's post (and pretty much the rest of it as well). I think I subconsciously gamble a bit more when I am up a bunch. I have found that after I triple up if I keep playing I inevitably end up pushing a small edge too much and lose a buy in or something. But I think if the game is good and you are aware of this potential trap then you should stay at the table. It's just difficult to keep playing your A game when you are up a lot b/c you inherently want to push that triple up to a 5X-6X win.

  7. Ok So I saw all you guys talking about poker tracker and I downloaded the trial version. It seems like some powerful software but I am not sure what to make of my stats. For example what is a strong pre flop raise percentage in 1/2 NL? What about aggression factor (same game)?? Is there some way to do comparisons with my stats to strong players?thanks

  8. I know this is a broad topic but it seems some people here have had some degree of success at the MTTs online. I've been playing cards for a long time and have had ok success in live tourney's but have had a lot of trouble cracking the top 10 online. In about 40 tries I've made the money about 12 times and only cracked top 10 1 time. I need to adjust my game. I am just hoping to get some advice from some of you who have been successful at cracking the real money.I play a pretty tight aggressive style for the most part. I play a lot of live NL and I don't think that my strategy in that context translates well to the tourney context. I've been trying to loosen up, especially in the first few rounds of the tourney. I'm trying to catch a big flop cheap. I've done this in my last three tourneys and have done pretty well in the first hour but have gotten cracked without making the money each time. Maybe I need to switch gears in the mid rounds more. Before I would play my tight agressive style but end up short stacked in the top 20 and just trying to claw my way up. Always comes down to one hand where if I double up I have a chance. I obviously would rather be in the spot of big stack and laying the pressure on than waiting for a hand to go all in with and pray. Anyways any advice or suggestions on playing styles that work for you guys (and gals) would be appreciated.

  9. I rarely call for a raise with these cards and sledom raise with them' date=' that way if I can get a cheap flop I can get away from the hand if there is any aggression on the flop.[/quote']I can see your point about rarely calling a raise with AQo, but I have to disagree with your second point about seldom raising AQo. If I'm going to play AQo, I like to be the raiser. So If it gets to me and no one has raised, I raise with AQo. The reason I do this is to thin the field (as AQo does better aqainst few opponents) and to protect my hand if I make top pair (since thats what we are trying to get). I want to force out those draws and make make people think twice about drawing against me. I generally use this strategy when trying to play combinations of face cards that are offsuit. If someone re-raises behind me, I'll call and then proceed with caution on the flop.Just a different of opinion.[/quoteNo, for the most part I do agree with you. The seldom situation I will raise with these cards is when I am in mid - late position and it's folded to me, but then again I will raise with a lot of cards in that situation. I still don't do it every time in that situation but do agree that you would like to thin the field with these cards when possible. Also someone else mentioned you can lose your whole stack with these cards at any limit. But I think if you are playing 2-4 or 3-6 or something like that with 200 in front of you, it is virtually impossible to lose that whole stack on one hand. In no limit, it can easily be gone when your AQ runs into AK.
  10. I'm fairly new to NL hold em. Been playing limit for about 15 years and made the switch in Jan. I don't think I will ever go back! I've been playing a lot online and some in BM casinos, so far I'm at about 120 hours, with my bankroll growing at about $20/hr (btw what is a strong hourly rate for $1-2 NL and how many hours do you think you need to make that number significant?) and learning something new every time I play. I was hoping to spark a little discussion about TPTK hands as these hands seem fairly difficult to play in NL.It seems with these hands you want to protect your cards against any draws on board, but you would like top pair with worse kicker to call (although I know you give him a chance to hit two pair). I often bet the pot with these cards and offer any draws only 2-1 (although I realize implied odds are a factor so maybe it's smarter to overbet the pot? But then you may be pot committing yourself). Rarely will I try and check raise, maybe if the board is completely unconnected I will go for it, or if preflop raiser is on my left. The problem is that using this technique seems to result in a lot of small wins and some big losses. It seems that when you get a caller for that pot sized bet on the flop your decision is a tough one on the turn. It's hard for me to give the player credit when the draw card hits on the turn b/c i assume I was offering to sttep a price on the flop. I probably need to slow down more when draw card hits on turn. But then there are times when trips just calls you down to the river and goes all in. I don't know how you get away from the hand in that situation. If you bet pot on flop and then turn comes a brick, you don't want to give a free card do you? Then you are pot committed on the river unless a really scary card comes. So I guess basically what I am asking is for some insight on how you guys play these cards generally, I think I can do a much better job with these so your input is appreciated. Plus I only talked about situations where you had a caller on the flop but what about when you are looking at a raise?

  11. I am not bagging on anyone for the limits they play but I will say that my game is generally $1-2 no limit and in that game AQ can be deadly. Like someone else mentioned it's extremely difficult to play against an EP raiser because they can easily have you beat if flop comes A, and it is very difficult to get away from. Same thing if flop comes Q high. YOu have a good hand then but not only is it vulnerable it could already be beat, either way it is a hand that can cost you your whole stack and rarely win you an entire stack. I rarely call for a raise with these cards and sledom raise with them, that way if I can get a cheap flop I can get away from the hand if there is any aggression on the flop.

  12. Can anyone recommend a poker odds calculator capable of figuring the odds of a given hand against a random hand? Also does anyone have any input on software such as poker tracker that tracks your online play and provides statiscal analysis of it?Thanks!
