  1. emma never responds to my texts. what can i say, zoeey is there for me when i need her.

"Zooey" is a stupid ****ing way to spell "Zoey," so I hate that bitch. "But NickCave," you're saying, "it's not HER fault! How can you hold her responsible for the name she was given by her parents?" To that I respond thusly: fuck you so hard. She could change her name pretty much whenever she wanted after she turned 18. Even if she didn't change it legally, she could have just used "Zoey" as her stage name. In Hollywood, your can be credited by whatever name you want, whenever you want. It's not like you have to show the director ID while he's putting together the opening credits. "It says on your license that your legal name is actually 'Zooey.' I'm sorry, but you don't leave me much choice. I am bound by law and custom to put your birth name in the film."

And don't even get me started on that trainwreck of a last name. I hold that whole family responsible for that thing. THE ONLY CHARACTER YOUR SISTER CAN PLAY CONVINCINGLY IS A SOCIALLY INEPT WOODEN ROBOT SCIENTIST.

  2. 100% chance I'm gone next. I am too lazy to find how the rules work, but I'm pretty steamed I'm not going to get to be Joan Rivers in the birthday thread anymore. Am I allowed to post anywhere? Like in the sports threads? Or am I banned from everywhere?

Such a ridiculous pass. For one, it's right on the money. That's like 30 yards. Alex Smith wishes he could do that.

Look how easily he just flicks it out there. I don't understand how that happens.

And he does it with such limited natural ability!

I came here to post this GIF.

My favorite part is Rubio. "Whoa looks like K Love put a little too much on that I'd better turn on the jets ah screw it no way I can get to... well. Okay, then."

Never occurs to him that pass could be for someone running AHEAD of him on the break until he sees it drop into Brewer's hands.

  4. Super upset the weekend's over, you guys. It doesn't seem fair. Don't get me wrong, I'm really grateful for the weekend job (#blessed), but it just goes so fast, you know? There's nothing better than the anticipation right before I click the calendar, or when I google "people that are famous, and that were born on today's date." What if I get Abe Lincoln? or Martin Luther King (funny story, Martin Luther regular was born today)? Or Vin Diesel?!

Seems like I get stuck with lots of country music people I have to ignore, instead. Anyway, I'm really bummed out, you guys, and not just because of the country stars.

av-9320.jpg?_r=1168905915 (41) Felt Bettor (At first glance, this name seems pretty innocuous, but if you think about it long enough, it is total nonsense. Is it a play on the phrase "felt better?" If so... why? Secondly, how do you bet felt. "Betting" and "felt" are both poker things, but "betting the felt" is not a thing. Just because two things are tangentially related does not mean you can arrange them however you like in a sentence, using one to modify the other all willy nilly.)

  5. lol I don't know how anyone still posting on this forum could have fallen for the Dutch and McGee Show in 2011, but it does my heart good that it happened.

I like both you and... Sklansky (is Dutch?), so don't take this the wrong way, but that was the "Tiger after he shoots four over on the front nine on the third day" of trolling attempts. I mean, you were going through the motions, but no way you were really trying that hard.

  6. I also don't think you actually save almost any at bats. Lets say you're playing a game that has 5 people reach base all game. 32 plate appearances total. Your 1, 2, 4 and 5th batter will have had 4 plate appearances, your 6, 7, 8, 9 will have 3. Your 3rd batter will have one gimmick at bat, and 3 real at bats from your crap fhitter. So, if you just kept your crap hitter at 8, he would have had 3 real at bats anyway, so.. what did you gain, an extra at bat for your utility guy while your number 5 batter gets bumped to 6 and loses an at bat? Grats?

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying. If you're moving good hitters down in the order, those good hitters will, collectively, lose enough plate appearances throughout the course of the season as a result to eliminate any value that you gain by getting a guy a PA in the first inning who is probably, like, about as good as your #7 or #6 hitter (at best). Then you lose the flexibility of using that decent bench bat in a higher leverage situation.

Say you have a pinch hitter whose only job is to waddle off the bench, hit, and then come out of the game. If he's a good hitter, you want him to be hitting in important situations, where it really matters what he does. You'd rather him get 50 PA in high leverage spots than 81 in the first inning, regardless of base/out/run state.

Plus, there's a really good chance, especially in the first inning, that the guy you inserted into the lineup will be hitting in a high leverage spot, BUT YOU'D RATHER HE WEREN'T.

Say, for example, you're the Tigers.

Austin Jackson leads off with a BB.

Torii Hunter singles, Austin Jackson to third.

Now, in the 3 hole, you have, I dunno, Andy Dirks (with the intention to replace him with Jose Iglesias in the bottom of the 1st) slotted in there. Sure. Cool. Dirks is okay, I guess. But wouldn't you much rather go "Cabrera, Fielder, Victor Martinez" there instead of "Dirks, Cabrera, Fielder?" The whole idea has very little upside, and all sorts of downside. Whenever the 3 spot comes up in the top of the first and it is HIGH LEVERAGE, using the one-and-done offensive replacement is an obvious mistake. Whenever the 3 spot comes up and the situation is neutral, we're transferring PAs from our 4-5-6 hitters to an inferior hitter, and burning a bench spot in the process.

Why would we ever do this...?

Really tough for the second birthday today, you guys. I hate to incite rebellion, but who would you have given it to? I'm already regretting my choice. I'll like the first poster who comes up with the correct answer.

EDIT: One guess per poster. We don't give out participation ribbons here, you guys.

  8. I hadn't seen that because I actually only go to Deadspin when I see an interesting article tweeted out.

I heard someone say that the Marines have a strict no hazing policy. Has that worked out for them or do they just do a better job at keeping it quiet? Downey and Dawson notwithstanding.

Yeah, but they have boot camp, which is like the worst hazing of anyone's life.

  9. I don't think that. But they knew Martin and his lawyers were preparing documents that will go into detail about everything that happened. And if you're out here vehemently denying it and then the truth comes out, that's going to be a whole lot worse for you.

Like Rafael Palmeiro wagging a finger at Congress or Ryan Braun's press conference blasting everyone (the first one anyway).

Obviously I don't know what really went on in there, but it seems like their best course of action would be to do what the front office types are doing. "We can't comment on an ongoing investigation."

Listening to Olbermann last night and it sounds like the GM and coach knew exactly what was going on. This is going to be the bounty situation where the rules of the game change. Every team does it, but the Dolphins are going to take the full punishment because the NFL can't publicly condone it.

This shit has already happened. Remember when that guy got his ****ing eyesocket shattered a while back in a hazing incident? (It's on the front page of Deadspin right now, which I'm sure you already know, because it's obvious we both refresh the site all day.)

I think this culture is a ways out from being eliminated. Fraternities pull this crap (and every year, somebody is either killed or horribly maimed), and every once in a while we'll hear some campus has outlawed hazing, but a few months later everyone forgets and we're right back to where we started. It's a symptom of a larger disease.

  10. Yes, they would.

Six cops at an illegal traffic stop will all lie for each other because that's what 'teammates' do.

Think an NFL locker room is some paragon of virtue?

Yeah, Martin broke protocol. Like in any gang, and let's be honest, that's exactly what we're talking about here,NFL locker room, the police, the mafia, going outside is unacceptable. No matter how legitimate Martin's grievance was, he immediately became the bad guy when he turned rat. Seriously, Incognito could have actually done all the things he threatened Martin with (shit in his mouth, give his sister a cream pie, murder him), and it still would have been a worse crime for Martin to take that business outside the locker room.

At that point, every single person in that locker room would lie through their teeth to discredit Martin. And so they are.

I happen to thing that whole Omerta culture is a joke, and I'm 100% on Martin's side. There's no way, when even the remotest option exists, that Martin should have to fight another adult to get him to lay off. Just because "it's the NFL" and it's "a grown man's game" doesn't mean everyone turns into a barbarian. Options existed. Martin exercised them. People who are vilifying him as a coward or a pussy are misguided.

  11. I'm certainly conservative on most issues, but I hate the Republicans. They're dead to me.

    • I think people should be allowed to own guns.
    • I think people should go to jail for breaking the law. (regardless of "overpopulation" or whatever)
    • I think police corruption is awful and basically the entire police force in Chicago should be in jail.
    • I think monopolies are the worst possible thing in a free market system and should be destroyed immediately.
    • I think capitalism is a decent way to control greed, as socialism collects all the money to only the pinnacle of the pyramid.
    • I think homosexuality is a sin, but isn't any worse than any other sin, and that the Bible explictly states at the end of I Corinthians 5, that I shouldn't care if it's a non-Christian that's practicing it. Henceforth, I think gay marriage should be allowed.
    • I think the best person should always get accepted or get the job regardless of race.
    • I think that there is zero difference between a baby in the womb on Tuesday and a baby in the arms of a mom on Wednesday. As such, I think abortion is straight murder for convenience and should be outlawed. The person inside a womb should have the same rights as a person outside the womb. If we found a fetus on another planet, we wouldn't dismiss isn't beating heart as a blob of goo. We would say it's life, and that's because it is.
    • I think that the healthcare system should be fixed, but I'm not sure there's a good solution that doesn't include lots of taxes and lots of freeloaders.
    • I think there should be term limits on every members of congress. (8 terms max for the house, 3 terms for the senate)
    • I think all farm subsidies should end immediately.
    • I think all foods should have a QR code with the origin and contents of the food.
    • I think conservation and environmentalism are generally good, and should supersede most business related decisions in regards to things like pollution.
    • I don't think scientists know how much impact man is really making in regards to global warming, but I absolutely think that we should be pushing nuclear power, electric cars, and other things that clearly won't hurt the planet. (I love electric cars. If they were practical, I would defintiely already have one. I almost bought a Focus Electric just recently, but couldn't pull the trigger with the 75 mile range and 13 hour charge time)
    • I think NASA's budget should be massive.
    • I think our military budget should be shifted greatly toward research and development and that our army size should be greatly reduced. The wars of the future won't require troops.

    That's it for now.

    HIGH FIVE FOR SAME TEAM!

We are in disagreement on a few issues, but not many. Neither of us would be welcome at a Tea Party rally, that's for sure.

  12. I already stated that anyone good enough to play professionally should be allowed to.

Then what is the point of amateurism? Really?

You're on record as being in favor of amateurism (or the NCAA), in general, and that's a pretty common sentiment. I think the counterpoint, though, is that it's a sham. If you can't profit from your own ability, nobody should be able to profit from it. The notion that Johnny Manziel, professional prospects aside, generates millions upon millions for Texas AM, yet can't write his name on something in exchange for money, is patently absurd. His arm, his talent, is worth millions of dollars. Right now, that money can be collected by Texas AM only. If she shatters his knee tomorrow, he'll never see a penny of that.

I don't understand what you think the value of amateurism IS. Let's talk about it.

  13. I doubt it. Most Republicans know how much spending increased under Reagan. They would just blame it on wars. First the Cold War, then(under Bush) the Gulf War.

That's a really good point. Since the end of Gulf I, we haven't had a single international military conflict, let alone any kind of high profile, abstract wars, like the Cold War.
