  1. They should have went with a different Phil.....Phil Laak. He would have been there anyway to watch Jennifer Tilley play and he was entertaining on the short lived Hollywood Home Game they had on E! a while back.

  2. Since the government and the taxpayers pay for schools the only way you could pay teachers more for doing a "better job" would be for people to have to pay tuition or raise each local cities property tax. Unfortunately schools are at the mercy of government on how much they get. I agree with some of the others that the voucher system is a bad idea. People will use it for the wrong reasons i.e. an athlete moving schools to go to a better sports school because the school he is at is a "bad school."Another bad thing that could result from deciding which schools get money based on performance could be that schools get rid of their bad testers by finding ways to get rid of the bad students. How many schools are going to want to add the poorer students to their school because it hurts their national/state average. I agree that students need to know more but they don't learn as much now because they are too busy getting ready for standardized tests.Another dumb thing, for example, is that, in my state, teachers have to pick up 15 hours of professional development to improve their skills to help their students. The only problem is that most of the hours you can pick up are during the school day, which means, in order to help students you have to leave them with a substitute teacher. And as for the guy that said teachers only have to work 10 months and they get great benefits he is only partially right. Administrators get paid huge salaries and get good benefits. In my case to get health insurance for my family would cost me half of my pay check.(Maybe we need to something with the outrageous prices hospitals and doctors charge) Many teachers work second jobs to get by. I have umpired during the summer and teach summer school(which the stae funds better for summer school then the regular school year)and I know many other teachers that work weekends to get by. Unless the teachers spouse has a good job they need to find other sources of income or realise that other jobs pay more and leave teaching.

  3. I currently am a teacher and have taught for about 12 years counting the years I was an aide and substitute. I love what I do and agree with you that the educational system is in bad shape. The main reason is the state of our society. When I was in school teachers got more respect and got support from the parents. Now the parents aren't wanting to take as much responsibility for the way their children act and perform. Another problem is the government funding schools. They send more money to schools in larger cities. They also could fund education better if they do what they say they are going to do. For example, when they started lotteries in some states they said they would use that money to help better fund education. They use the lottery money for education, but they took the money they used for education to other departments. So education still had the same amount of money but the state ddn't have to put as much in.I would love for teachers to be paid based on performance but the schools can't afford it. If "No Child Left Behind" and the way government funds schools they will get their wish of having huge schools eliminating many smaller schools so there will be less schools to fund.As for why there is not more good teachers is because of pay. Many people leave teaching because they find better paying jobs. I make $30,000 a year, which isn't bad, but for having a "professional" job is not that much. I didn't stay in teaching for the money though. I see it as being able to reach kids. If I wanted to I could probably get a different job and make more money but I wouldn't be as happy. Unfortunately not only do teachers have to teach but they have to be so much more. In my case (since I teach in an elementary school), I get to be some kids only male influence in their life because there are more single parent families. Kids also have so much more stuff do deal with then when we were kids. It blows my mind how many things they know or have dealt with it at such an early age.I wish there was a way teachers could get paid by performance but unless the government changes there way things will not change and get worse.I think I have ran on enough. Thank you for doing your blog. I know people attack you on it but I really do enjoy reading it and this one was really well written.

  4. The only thing that happens when you make goood laydowns and the flop hits is to encourage you to make poor choices on what to play. If you think of it as 8 out of my 10 laydowns miss the flop then I am saving more money then what I would have won playing something I normally wouldn't

  5. Playing in a sng last night I had pocket 6's UTG and did a standard raise and eliminated everyone but one player. The flop came out 1 spades and a 6 to get my set. Player checks to me and I bet about 3/4 of the pot on the flop to test the waters and he calls.Turn comes out low spade. He checks and I bet about 1/2 the pot this time.Last card comes out a 3rd spade and he checks to me. I didn't think he had the flush but I was curious about what he had and I just checked and he flipped over the nut flush. He said he was surprised I din't bet again, but I mainly checked to see shat he was calling me with. I know it worked out because it saved me money against the flush but do any of you ever check down when you are last to act at the river to gain info on players.

  6. My question is what do you consider to be a tougher person to play against:(A) A person who is book smart. Person who reads books, plays by the books, and things of that nature. or(B) A person who just picks up the game and seems to be more of a natural at it. Plays on instinct, doesn't do all the prescribed moves.Another part to this is which one do you consider yourself and which one would you rather be if you had to choose between the two. I know a lot of people consider themselves both but if you had to pick one of the choices what would you choose.

  7. I think you need to be a more selective chaser. 1. Do the players that are capping out usually have anything?2. If I catch my card to get my flush or straight draw are their bigger staright or flush draw possibilities out there.....nothing worse then catching your card and someone having bigger staright or flush.3. As was said earlier.....when you think negative bad things happen.4. Tighten up a little bit and drill some of the chasers when you DO have the nuts. This might slow them down a little bit when you are in the pots.5. You may need to bump up a level to get away form the insane play but make sure it is something your bankroll can handle.

  8. Playing rebuys are the easiest way to get sucked out on. You have to play uber-tight until the rebuy period is over and try to stay out of situations that will cause you to have to rebuy. When I play in rebuy tourneys in casinos I keep enough rebuy money to rebuy twice...hopefully once during the first hour and one for the add on during the break. I see lots of people that chase terribly the first hour because they can rebuy and go through 4 or 5 rebuys in the first hour. You take advantage of these players the second hour becuase you have established a solid tight player image, Plus afetr rebuys are over people don't chase as much becuase they can't rebuy. You just need to be more selective of your hands during rebuy time and remember you can't outbluff a calling station. just get as much money from them as you can when you have the best hand.

  9. I think it depnds on a lot of things:1. How many players are in before you?2. Are they suited/connected and if you flop four to a flush or open ended straight, what cards can beat you and how much you are willing to spend to see the rest?3. What is your table image?4. How much will lsoing the 1/2 bet hurt you if you call?5. If its a tourney: how early is it?6. Do you defend your blinds all of the time? If you do this people may pick up on it and limp in some to get you to invest more money? After all that, I suggest you just mix it up unless you want the tight player image. If you are wanting the tight strong player image then fold more often than calling with it. Hope that helps a little...but its just my opinion.

  10. I have won moneyon both sites. I started playing at Pokerstars pre-Moneymaker era and if you are looking for good variety in game options try pokerstars. If you are looking for easier money but bad beats from weaker players go to PartyThe main reason I stay with Pokerstars though is the tournament structure....starting out at $1500 instead of the $800. Plus they have the deepstack tourneys.

  11. I think if you just call with 5-5 and do a check raise after the flop you might be able to chase more people out. Its hard to get people to fold in limit preflop. Plus with a 5-5 and if you miss the flop any over card on the board can beat you which means you have more difficult decisions to make. After hitting on the flop the check-raise should put flags up for the other players that you caught something they may not want to chase against.

  12. I know they signed up Hachem, but it looks like they only have him, Money, and Raymer. Ummm
They also have the GREAT Erin Ness. She's done a lot for poker. Just shows no matte how big a DONK you are if your hot you can do anything. :club:
True, but having someone that deals with a mainstream type magazine is also good for the public relations end of things and an occasional cheap advertisement :-)
  13. Look, is it right they asked them to play YesIs it right they accepted the invitation NoThis is the equivalent to saying well The New England Patriots have been to the Super Bowl so much we'll let them automatically advance to the game and play the winner of the playoffs. It wouldn't be right but would they refuse if given that opportunity, no.

  14. I was wondering if both the BB and SB are sitting out and you are in early to mid position should you lower your starting hand requirements to try to win the uncontested blind and a half or should you play the way you regularly do?Or if you are fourth to act preflop in the same situation and the first 3 people fold do you try to do this?

  15. I used to despise limping in with pocket A's becuse of letting too many people see the flop and getting beat that way but I think I have found the perfect spot for doing it and was wanting to see if this is what a lot of others do or do they like to limp early. Here is my idea:The best time to limp with A's is late in the tourney/sng you are playing in due to the fact that their are a lot of shortstacks left at the table. I usually do this when I am middle to top of the chipstack at my table due to the fact that late in tourneys or sngs it seems to be raise or all in and their aren't too many flops when the blinds are high. this is probably a pretty routine thing to do but it seems to work out well.

  16. I think a lot of the poker boom will depend on how well each individual does. If you try it out of curiosity and get crushed odds are it will be like touching a hot stove when you are a kid. You won't like it and won't try it. Me personally, I started playing play $$ and freerolls and enjoyed it enough to where I tried for real $$ and got beat some but being competitve and liking the challenge of getting better. Many people will try it and enjoy it and many won't. I think it will level out and decline some but as long as people keep winning millions in the HUGE tourneys everyone is going to want to try to get some of the $$'s in poker. I learned backwards when I started playing. I took up Omaha hi/lo and stud hi/lo to preserve my modest bankroll. many people get into the NL hold'em just to do the "all in thing" I have switched to playing limit and NL hold'em more recently because I have gotten more comfortable in my skills in it. I am not great at one game but i am good at four different types of poker which will keep me interested in it more than if I were to play NL all of the time and get burnt out on it.When the "newness" wears off for people they will not play as much which means the easier mney may dry up a little

  17. I was curious about wether you feel better if you play poorly and make the money or if you play well and get beat before the bubble?I've had a case where I played really well and made the final table of a limit tourney with a big chip lead and then blow it and get 6th which kinda bummed me out about how i played at the final table.I've also been down to $30 in a MTSNG and came back to get 3rd. even though it Wasn't first I was just happy to accomplish what i did without tilting.Yesterday I got 37th in a 570 person limit tourney on Pokerstars and played terrible. I wasn't all that excited I got paid.Does anyone else go through these little cycles where they aren't satisfied if they are having good results?
