  1. Al Smith dinner was okay.

Donald started strong, then fell apart.

Hillary was off on timing and had almost as many lame jokes.

His "Pardon Me" joke was best one of night.

IMHO the "Mike Pence will deny that Trump was ever here" joke was better. And hey Clinton didn't get booed multiple times, and generally stuck to the tradition of using self-deprecating jokes instead of going for the opponents jugular.

  2. "You guys have lost the right to be indignant about X because Y"

While I hesitate to call Trump smart this has been a pretty good move from his campaign. If you look back at his history (to the primaries and beyond) he will take his weaknesses / vulnerabilities and go low and make a preemptive strike (eg: Carly Fiorina? looks like a horse and was a disaster at HP; oh nevermind the 3? times my Atlantic City casinos went into bankruptcy. Ben Carson is a liar for his backstory -- don't mind the 14 million that I had handed to me, I'm a self-made man. Hillary is a liar but never mind the dozens of times he completely denies stuff he's said at rallies, etc), or throw innuendo where's there's proof but the alt-right media fills in backstory (mass voter fraud, Clinton birtherism, Clinton Foundation), or where there's smoke but no fire (sorry but the wikileak email revelations aren't all that shocking or amazing).

And so we are in the situation where you can honestly think both candidates are terrible so hey, let's go for the "anti-establishment" guy (use of quotes intentional). And I'm not saying Clinton is all that great but it's always funny when Trump slams her and Obama for not doing more (when they were blocked by Republicans), or goes against traditional Republican values (ie: it's your fault for not adding more regulations so I didn't cheat my workers on pay, import all of my products from elsewhere, etc).

  3. Over the past 25 years, the proportion of people living in extreme poverty has fallen from nearly 40% to under 10%. Last year, American households enjoyed the largest income gains on record and the poverty rate fell faster than at any point since the 1960s. Wages have risen faster in real terms during this business cycle than in any since the 1970s. These gains would have been impossible without the globalisation and technological transformation that drives some of the anxiety behind our current political debate.

    https://www.brookings.edu/opinions/the-rising-longevity-gap-between-rich-and-poor-americans/

"Nonetheless, the most reliable statistics show that families at the top have enjoyed faster income gains than the gains enjoyed by families in the middle and at the bottom. Income disparities have gone up fastest among working-age people who depend on wages to pay their families’ bills."

Average wealth going up doesn't matter a whole lot if the gap increases since relative $$ is how people judge their lot in life. Look at England / Brexit... in terms GDP per capita they are very much better off as a country; until you realize that the entire nation is stagnant/crumbling and all of the growth is being funneled into London. And I imagine it's only worse in the States where social assistance / retraining / etc doesn't exist as much.

  4. Thank you for deeming to speak down to us poor slobs who can't think smart like you. I hope you can continue your altruistic ways for us deplorable.

I knew it was going to be pointless because this is the Internet -- there's no way I'm going to convince you that Trump is a con-man that has spend the last 5 decades taking advantage of people suddenly waking up one day and being super altruistic. During the last debate he talked about having "invested ~200 million" into the campaign. And on his website he has released a couple of policies ... one being the biggest tax cut ever for the wealthy and the second is an anti-ISIS strategy that is straight out of the current administration's playbook. Nor are you going to convince me that all of the real concerns w.r.t. globalization (corporations having way too much power, inequality between classes, China blatantly stealing everyone's IP, etc) that Trump won't, or is capable of actually doing anything about it. Want a job in Trump's America? Join the military.

  5. I cannot believe that a government who can get experts in economics cannot make everything all better.

Just do X and Y is a sure thing.

It's almost like economics isn't a hard science.

Economics is an interesting field but it certainly has it's limitations. Like we can predict that since China (who used to be the largest importer of coal) is going nuclear will cause demand for coal to drop and therefore the price to drop. As the price of coal drops mines will be forced to close because they are unprofitable. Which will continue to happen until supply is reduced to the point were the price recover (which is the free market economy at work -- which many think is the cure for everything). But it wouldn't have foreseen the Chinese going away from coal and there are too many unknowns about the other major users for coal will do to know where the final equilibrium point will be.

Economics and forecasting is a bit like poker; you know based on math the predicted outcome every hand ... but you only have loose information about what cards that the other players hold, you only kind of know their betting patterns and what cards will be turned over in the draw. Also it's way too easy to see stuff and go "A causes B" but really it's "C causes A and B" and come to bad conclusions.

  6. Wow... OK. Anyways this for my own interest but hey maybe you might get some benefit from it.

Trump is trying to get elected...just like Hitler

There are other similarities like the GOP thinking that they could manage Trump (ie with Pence as a running mate, the convention resolutions) . And a platform based on Nationalism / the world is out to get us, which is incredibly effective in the short run, but CAN turn ugly in the long run. ie If race/religion/profession X is responsible for our situation and we can't improve our situation then we must do more against X.

Bad economic times...after 8years of Obama

Obama took over as President as the start of a recession triggered by the home loan fisco. So in absolute terms is record is not that great but "During President Obama's presidency, the United States' GDP growth has beat the GDP growth of the other original NATO member countries by the widest margin of any president since World War II".

Manufacturing jobs fled the States long ago due to the Walmartifcation (race to the bottom on prices) of the country. When Trump thinks of the glory days of the US the minimum wage was pretty decent, now people are working multiple jobs just to put food on the table and look for the cheapest prices possible.

Coal mining has also been savaged but this has nothing to do with Obama's green initiatives... the Chinese have already in the process of building ~1000 nuclear plants and so demand is just dropping way down.

All of these free trade agreements does create a shift in economies as countries adjust to what is most profitable. In terms of American winners it's undoubtedly food and tech. But that's why this election isn't about red v blue state but urban v rural. Many people have done great under globalization and others not so much.

When was Obama called Hitler by anyone?

Google image it. But I do remember seeing tons of picture of posters with mustaches drawn in at anti-health reform demonstrations.

Even Hillary only tried to say he was born in Kenya, not Germany.

    http://www.politifac...llary-clinton-/

"There is no evidence to support this. Clinton supporters circulated the rumor in the last days of the 2008 Democratic primary and after Clinton had conceded to Obama. But the record does not show Clinton or her campaign ever promoting the birther theory, let alone starting it."

  7. Good to see the Clinton campaign finally figured out that when hillary talks, people hate her.

Smart move to keep her from the microphone this week as much as possible.

Send out Michelle, so we can show the video of her saying Hillary will say anything and do nothing. And the lyrics from their good friends in the hip hop community to show how outraged she really is.

Send out Obama, so we can show Bill's recent video saying Obama care is disaster.

Send out these women who just showed up, as their stories fall apart.

Send out Algore, so everyone can say "who"?

These last days are going to be interesting, put on your seatbelts

LOL what??? Instead of these qualified peoplethey should he have sent out another notables like Scott Biao, or a Guiliani who apparently has dementia? Trump would love to have people say how great of person he his but current Republicans (Governors/Senators/etc) are staying away in droves http://www.newsday.com/news/nation/republicans-who-don-t-support-donald-trump-1.12443458 and actually voting FOR Clinton. And nice deflection throwing away their whole point like that.

Meanwhile in Trump-land he was all over CNN when it was fun and cool to bully other Rep candidates but now they are actually "doing their jobs" and "fact checking" Trump is no-where to be seen. It's up to poorly equipped surrogates to try and cover him? Talk about keeping away from the microphone.

  8. So Trump hates the Jews...just...like.........HITLER

    It's so obvious.

Everything he says he's really secretly talking about the Jews.

I bet he really hates the fat female Jews

Well if you are familiar with 1930 German politics (lol ya right) Hitler came to power in bad economic times through trickery but legally (no coup). So he's not literally Hitler, just figuratively Hitler when he was first trying to get elected as Chancellor.

Unlike Obama who totally was Hitler for trying to bring in universal health care. /s

  9. The inevitable conclusion is that normal democratic institutions no longer serve them. 7/

This stuff is way more dangerous in defeat than it is in victory. 8/

Things have taken a much more serious and dark turn from 18 hrs ago when Trump was turning Bill Clinton into Bill Cosby. 10/x

I think the alternative reality that the Trump campaign finds it self in -- remember the whole "say's who line"? Obama is Muslim/Kenyan/Gay, Rudy Guliani claiming that Clinton wasn't around for 9/11 when there's pictures of them both walking to the site, Trump pointing to online polls claiming that he won the debates (when the overnight real surveys show otherwise), etc, etc. A world in which Hillary is a Machiavellian super-bitch and Trump can do no wrong even though he's painfully ignorant of the world. He is Colbert's Factiness (repeat it enough times it will become true) to the nth degree. Also petty, vindictive, misformed, a con artist etc. You know why the Russian are "allegedly" helping the Trump campaign? Because Putin knows he can drive circles around this simpleton. Who isn't all that great at the one thing he claims to be great at which is business.

Nevermind that his campaign resonates with the poor, the disenfranchised, the conspiracy theorists, the far-right militia, etc. This isn't a tire fire of the Republican Party, it's of democracy. Which, to be fair, was helped getting started by the Democrats pushing through Clinton when trying to finish off the Sanders campaign instead of coasting.

Look, I'm not a fan of Clinton but it's hard to tell where reality and outright fabrication end (like blaming her for Benghazi when it was the Republicans were the ones who pushed for cutting security staff). Like all of this crap about her charity when it turns out that Trumps isn't even registered properly. "Put her in jail" for the email server but Powell used AOL, Romney spend $100 M on new PC for the state to hide emails, Bush/Cheney allegedly deleted 100m emails. But what really seals the deal in my mind is that Clinton can get a-grade politicians to help her out while Trump has the varsity team rejects working for him. Who is actually going to have a competent cabinet.

  10. I think this is a good trade for the leafs, in that it represents an actual commitment to a complete tear down and rebuild, instead of the half-assed way they've done it in the past.

In many ways it's a win-win for both teams:

    - Ottawa sheds players that we were that were doing nothing for their salaries. Cowen has been benched a ton; but on the bright side can be bought out for 1/3 of salary. Michalek is under performing his salary if no other reason than constant injuries (great person though). Which is a shame as he's a poor man's Hossa when he's at his top of his game. Greening is getting a lot of money to play in the AHL. Sad as it is, as a budget team Ottawa cannot afford to buy players out or bury them.

    - Toronto gets rid of an albatross of contract on the player that could be Redden 2.0 (still reasonably well regarded around the league but astutely hatted by the home fans). Or maybe with Phaneuf playing more sheltered minutes (though my understanding is that he's already doing so...) on the 2nd pairing he might be ok.

Basically in the first half of the deal Ottawa wins, in the second half Toronto wins. But at the end of the day Ottawa probably looses unless Phaneuf has a rejuvenation because it will make the team just good enough to make the first round of playoffs, make a few million for Eugene and then croak.

  11. I agree completely. But the way it shook out tells me that it's not a group decision. Shanahan is running the show. I'm not saying that's good or bad, it's just different from the public posture. And I agree about the rebuild. But as of this week, they are keeping Phaneuf, and no longer are offering Bozak and Lupul (probably mostly because they were on the market for a month at a pretty low price and no one offered).

Good thing they are paying Babcock in Brinks trucks to have a say in personel... the ink isn't even dry on that contract yet.

  12. "Here’s the new development: following the Kings’ termination Richards’s contract on the basis of a “material breach”, it was reported that Richards was allegedly taken into custody at the Canadian/U.S. border in connection with the unlawful possession of OxyContin pills."

Not the smartest pill in the box (pun intended) -- seems like it would be an obvious search by border control.

  13. Just thinking out loud. The whole lets go and grab London Knights because Hunter knows them and the system. Is this a good thing?

We have made several picks, signings and trades because of this connection recently. I believe this is also why we will hold on to and sign Kadri for a long time.

Given the underhanded way London stocks up on a lot of good players it seems to be a bit of a self-fufilling prophecy.

  14. Not sure what he needs to do is turn things around. He can score 40 goals next year and still be a minus player. Is he all of a sudden going to be a solid 2 way player, I doubt it. His shortcomings might get hidden better with the Pens

I think the chance he gets bought as a Penguin is pretty high

Going back to being a 40G guy is turning things around, no? It's even fine if he's flat in the +/- department... but only if he upgrades their PP.

  15. Phil is a great goal scorer there is no doubt but he doesn't fit this rebuilding team.

I was hoping our return would be slightly better, but unfortunately Phil s stock dropped quite a bit after last season.

I think he's better suited as a complementary player -- sitting in the background getting the job done rather being a leadership type. Maybe he's good in the locker room anyways (like an Alfie lead-by-example?).

If Kessel can turn things around, wow... there will be a lot of revisionist jokes about the Leafs management going around. :)
