  1. Can you not get tickets at the door?
Tyler?!?! You are still alive? I emailed you last week....did you get it? I´ll be back in six days...bleh.- Jordan
Wow long time no see, I'm doing great. You should come down for the thursday game sometime if you can ever make it. We switched up to 10,000 starting chips and 25-50 blinds etc. Good game. I haven't checked my email here recently, as I haven't had much internet access and have been working alot...Though I'm trying to get into this OSU thing on sunday, unfortunantly I dunno anyone willing to share a friend pass...Maybe I can come up one day for the tourney you've been talking about up there. You going on sunday? I think I might get one of these guys to buy me a ticket for the open to all tourney and try to make a friend for the seminar Danny's holding. I'll pm you my new Cell # too. Take care and tell me all about your trip.Cheers,Tyler
  2. In your most recent article you describe your great table and how you couldn't really "run without the ball." Obviously you do very little bluffing and mostly play for value. My question pertains to how your starting hand requierments change as well as how you play in general. For example, Do you stay away from weak aces, or play them more frequently and why?Do you limp and call more often keeping the pots as small as you can pre-flop and "extract value" from the flop forward? How do you handle newer players that tend to overbet in relation to pot size and blind size, this is usually very true in my circle of games in the earlier blind stages.I have read what many other players do in these situations. However I am interested in your thought processes onthese as I trend more towards your style, and many of the tournaments I play I have a field similiar to your descriptions and I feel my results in some of these has become sub par.I think I am being too aggressive pre-flop with more of my "speculative" hands. I'm thinking it may be better to limp/call and then use my flop playing skill to my best advantage....basically are you raising alot pre-flop at these weak tables....Cheers,Tyler

  3. Some friends and I are planning a 2 day event. And advice/thoughts would be great from anyone...esp Daniel as he has a bit of expeirence as to what a good tournament is.30 players17 hours (12 first day 5 second) with the final table being on the second day.10,000 starting chips for $50.00 with 1 rebuy for first 2-3 hours and 1 add on. So we hve more than average chips available...My main concern is that the blinds are still too much....starting the second day we estimate 750,000 in chips to be in play...with a BB of 10,000 avg stack has 7.5 BB is this typical or just plain wrong?I have a few questtions on modifications based on this info. With fewer players over a long time we have the antes a little lower. We reach a 200 ante when we get to the 1500-3000 level.(here is the structure)day1.jpg We plan to enter the final table with blinds of:Day 2 Sunday day2.jpg*Sorry for the images... getting thewhite space right with forums is annoying. All those tags and nothing for preformatted text :(Cheers,Tyler

  4. Off the top of my head I'd go with this based on no limit holdem skills in alphabetical order:Doyle BrunsonJohnny ChanTed ForrestChau GiangGus HansenJohn HenniganPhil IveyJohn JuandaErick LindgrenDaniel Negreanu[/quoteIts a conspiracy...no one in the top ten is in the second half of the alphabet....I'm screwed....(Mayes)
  5. Ungar's overrated.Being dead and having a tragic storyline helps his legacy a lot.
Overated?? The guy knew what his oppents were holding half the time....dead on!!!!
There are a number of pros who can do that today -- notice you said 'half the time'. And honestly, I know little about him, but to me his legacy is diminished today due to the fact that he won in what, '71 and '72... wasn't one by vote by other professionals or something like that, and the other was actual tournament play with less than 100 people? I don't remember the exact figures, and I'm too lazy to google them. My point is, later this year there will be a main event with possibly over 6,000 people. I don't think he would be considered the greatest player ever with the talent pool and straight up OCEAN of players today. Chan's back to back to (nearly) back run is more impressive to me. However, Stu's legacy is honestly probably good for poker, as far as marketability goes. Every game or sport needs its Jordan, Ruth, Gretzky, etc etc. That way you can curse every single promising young player by saying "Can he be the next Stu?" Once poker is on the major networks, there will be reports on every young player that could be the next Stu, forcing on them a manufactured pressure to add to the pressure of the game as it is. Awesome idea. Sometimes I wonder why I aspire to be part of the media.
The vote was for Johnny moss. The only other 3 timer. Also smash...Brunson is quite accredited as well but both of his wins were in even smaller games...
  6. Alright' date=' I'm probably going to get flamed for being an idiot, but I just wanted to know. Where do you draw the line between calling becasue of pot odds and folding because of your read on the other player? This question may not even make any sense, but I just wanted to throw it out there.[/quote']I'm kinda sad that there have been people flaming people for a question like this to make yo hesitant, that being said I'll do my best to help you out, this is a very smart question. You need to usually go with your read, when you start second guessing yourself, guess what your wrong. Most players get themsleves into trouble when they second guess themselves. Once yo feel you have your read then calulate the odds of A. whether your actually ahead B. if you are behind how many wins you need( or if there might be a possible chop on the board, it can be better to split the pot than give up a chop to anothe player, this is really only in rare cases but can make a difference). C. How many of your possible wins might be shared by this person or can flush or straighten them up. Once you've thought of these possibilities you then can decide what is the correct action. One thing to really remember is that if you really are borderline between folding or calling I really feel that folding is the best option and just move ontohe next hand
Calling is a better option if the pot is like 8 to 10 BB me thinks...if it has 10 BB you only have to be right like 8-9% of the time to show a profit.
Tyler, thanks so much for that answer, it was a great answer and helped me out a lot
Remember to deermine your %'s before odds....especially at first. You don't wnat to be like well i'm getting 1 to 3...then be like well he is probably bluffing 25% in this spot...because it will make you call too liberally and start a bad habit of bad judement.
  7. One thing to consider is this. Calculate the odds after determining a read. Another thing more advanced players do is try to associate a % of accuracy. Calling on the end is a good example. Opponent bets representing hand X. If you feel that he may bluff in this situation 20% of the time then if you are getting 1 to 4 or more on your call then make the call. Another situation occurs when you put them on a certain hand. Say you have 53s in the BB and it gets raised by the button but you know all 8 people will call as the game is loose you call and flop two pair. Checks to the button who bets you raise. Folds around to button whom calls. Turn brings an Ace. You know that guy will only raise preflop with AA, KK or AK. You bet and he raises you. Now you have to consider the odds even though there is a good chance he has Aces. With one ace out you have 3 un accounted for. That means 3 ways to AA, no kings are exposed, whcih means 6 ways to KK and 12 ways to AK (4 kings x 3 aces). Total combinatins 21You know he will only play this way with one of those 3 hands. you figure the only hand that beats you is AA so you have 3 to 18 or 1 to 6. If you are getting 1 to 6 or better to call his raise you should. Don't forget also that you have 4 outs to improve as well. Odds are not just used when determing how to play a draw.Cheers,Tyler

  8. The most important part of playing poker for a living successfully would in my mind have to be bankroll management. If you are depending on it for a living you have to have a sufficient bankroll. You have 2 options in my mind really.1. Borrow enough money to make a real bankroll for 5-10. I'm not saying credit wise...as the interest is insane.....but from a friend or family member. 2. Get a part time job and partially support yourself and fund your bankroll. Part time will give you enough time to play/build bankroll. Myself I have a bankroll of 2,140 for 5/10. I play live so I get far fewer hands per hour and work about 52 hours per week outside of poker play. I started with 500 on 12/05/04 and have under 80 hours :D. Most of my winnings go to my bankroll . That is one benifit ... faster BR growth.Cheers and luckTyler

  9. Wannabe,I have a few suggestions as I've been in that low confidence situation before, at least once.1: Life outside of poker. I'm being a total hypocrite on this but it is good advice. The quality of your life out side of poker has a huge impact on your game. 2: Take some time off. This will give you time to improve home life aiding your poker play/confidence.3: Find 1 or 2 leaks in your game, we all have them so don't pony out of this, and spend your time thinking about these leaks instead of playing. If you play online you could watch games in progress and try to figure out how much it would have cost you that session. 4: Use some off time just documenting regulars at your limit find what they do right and what they do wrong....emulate their strenths and exploit their weaknessess.Cheers,Tyler

  10. Once in a live 10/20 I had KK a little over 10 times in 1 1/2 - 2 hrs. It got to a point where no one believed my raises and i'd take the flop 6 ways. Flopped a few sets and boats lost around 60% of them though. Several were cheaply folded when an ace hit the flop/turn. I was literally looking at my first hole card and thinking no w ay not again.....Cheers,Tyler

  11. Skalansky's outlines poker theory in his books very well. The problem I think you will find is that until small stakes hold em the examples were all out dated for the limits the "doubters" play in. Most of his examples assume an average of 3 people seeing the flop. If you are averaging 4+ players seeing a the table is loose. Here is a perfect example. Skalansky advises that raises in late position have added equity as they may pick up the blinds un contested. how many games have you seen a player enter with a raise in late position and pick up the blinds? I still raise in Late position for value as many over defend their blinds. You cannot take this information and apply it like a math formula. You must take the theories and think about them. Apply them to new situations. If you are not willing to do that you will never be a winning player..Cheers,Tyler

  12. Scince you do not depend on poker as an income this gives you some flexibilty. Ok the recommended "bankroll" for a game is 300 BB. At 5/10 thats 3000 and 10/20 is 6000.well why not save to about 4500 and take a shot. If you lose you drop back down to 5/10 if you go on a little tear you are at 10/20 to stay.its not 100% but its an idea.Cheers,Tyler

  13. No limit cash games are more profitable for a seasoned pro. No question. The problem is there can be higher fluxuation. So yes if you have a limited bankroll play limit. Also its rare to find a big NL game as its just pros vs pros meaning very little edge. You should master all forms of poker if attempting to be a pro..Cheers,Tyler

  14. I read in another players article about Daniel walking around the Bellagio with racks of 25.00 chips handing htem out to dealers and wishing them a merry christmas. This was at least a year ago (maybe an annual thing). I have to say you won't find many other players doing this. It just goes to show you how much class he has. I may do something similiar with 5.00 chips next year. My bankroll cannot afford it just yet ;pCheers,Tyler
