  1. First of all, I don't think we need to give you any advice on how to win at a poker tournament--you've entered our Tuesday night tournament 2 times and won first place both times.
First of all congratulations x3000gtx! I agree 100% with what Ecylpse, you obviously have a good poker game. People are going to strongly disagree with this next statement and by every book I have ever read what I am about to say is false, but it was true for me. My very first live tournament was last year at the Imperial Palace. I cant remember the exact details, but it was a rebuy with addon and about 50 people, around $50 buyin. I ended up placing 2nd and took a nice prize home cause there were several rebuys and nearly everyone added on. The one main thing I remember about my first live tourny was I never once noticed/looked for tells mainly because I didnt know how to. I simply played my cards, position, and odds as if I were online. I did do a couple of what I thought at the time were 'intimidating' verbal things like "how much is left in your stack" or things like that which surprisingly worked well.Since that tourny I have read most of Caro's Book of Tells and watched "Howard Lederer Tells All" DVD which I found to be pretty helpful and can only do good things for your game. The bottom line is you obviously know how to play poker and that goes a long way. Although tells and live game experience are definitely important you can most definitely win this thing without having that experience! GOOD LUCK!
  2. Awesome! I couldnt get off work this week to drive down. Just 3 hours away from several poker players I would love to meet. DANGIT! Thanks for sharing.I had a similiar experience when I met Gene Simmons here in Nashville, Kiss has been my favorite band for EVER and my wife and I have seen them in concert over a dozen times. He did a book signing here and I was almost afraid to meet him cause I had this 'image' that I didnt want destroyed. Gene met every thing I expected and more. He took pictures with me with my own camera, autographed several things, and even called my wife (who was at home with the kids) on my cell phone. Its great experiences like that which keep fans cause they do what I'm doing right now, tell everybody!

  3. I have probably played 30 MTTs with 2000+ people and have only made money 9 times (1st once and final table 2 other times) so I am by far anyone to give advice on MTTs, but I do know 100% why I dont do better yet even knowing what I am doing wrong I still cant seem to correct it. Since I started keeping my online poker blog/journal and using pokercharts is pretty neat the light it brings. My last 2 MTTs I placed 334th/1851 and 196th/2442 (money). I think my biggest problem is I'm 'scared' of the blinds even though my chip stack is really fine. I average probably 3 - 5 tournies (SNGs) a day so I am very use to playing with low blinds (10/20 - 100/200). 2 hours + into a tournament when blinds get up to 400/800 with 75 ante, etc I get this mental block that I have to make a move, even if I'm sitting with 10,000 chip stack to 10,000 average.Having 1000 chips with a 100 blinds seems like nothing to me, but having 10,000 chips to 1000 blinds makes me 'think' if I dont do something soon I am going to blind away. The truth is if you look at your position you are usually better off then over half of the other players and they are going through the same mental thinking you are. You have to be disciplined and patient enough to pick your right hand and not feel pressured to play a marginal hand. This is my biggest downfall. For example last night I had about 2/3 rds average chip stack about 6000 to average 8000. I had 55 on the button and raised it 3x (2400). The BB reraised me all-in and I felt like I was pot committed by then and if I folded I could never recover with less then 4000 in chips so I called and made my stand with my 5s. Reraiser had AQ and hit both his A and Q and I never recovered. Looking back this was completely stupid and I should have limped / folded at reraise, but I felt this pressure to build my stack. I know this is a lot of rambling, but hope it helps some people with at least how one person thinks.

  4. well if someone would let me give them some money on empire poker for them giving me some on stars ill play...but got no money on stars and i can't get my neteller to work or firepay THEY SUCK...not really but they say they have to contact ME and they never censored call
I'll stake you if you pay back the $11 if you lose and agree to pay 25% of the white meat if you win :D
  5. just suggesting if he wanted a change of pace or if he knows how to play split games such as stud hi/lo or omaha hi/lo (these games are more complicated but i think that if new players learn these they can increase there bankroll better then holdem) then he could show beginners how to play these also.-However it seems his forte is hold'em
gotcha. yea I would love to see this exact thing for different games like Omaha. I have never ventured outside of Hold em mainly because I havent wanted to take time to learn a new game. Its taken me 4 or 5 years to learn Holdem and I am still learning something every day. I just bought Harringtons book and made it through first chapter. Its awesome.
  6. smash do you know how to play stud hi/lo. If you know how to play at all I would suggest when you have 150 bucks to play the .25 .50 cent tables they are quite easy to beat. I was reading your posts and decided to drop to a lower limit to see how the play is and doubled my buyin in 10 minutes at the .25 .50 cent tables. Very few bettors but tons of callers. Easy game.
I dont think Smash's goal is to win money here although that is certainly going to be a nice benefit. From previous posts Smash says he makes $40,000 - $50,000/year online. From my understanding this $50 - $1000 experiment is mainly to help people of this forum with their game by providing detailed explanations of his hands so we can attempt to learn some things.
  7. I agree. We'll see how it goes this time. I'm still thinking about driving down to Tunica one day this week to watch some play, not sure."Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died." — Steven WrightThats hilarious, Steven Wright and his new nemesis Mitch Hedberg are two of my favorite comedians. Throw in Stephen Lynch and you got my top 3.

  8. Smash, good stuff. I actually enjoy these and enjoy the through process explanations. Even though I dont play Limit (Just NL) the through process is neat. I am going to pick up Harringtons book today which is going to be similiar to this I think except focuses on NL Tournies which is what I play so will be really beneficial. Two quick comments/questions .....

  9. Won an autographed copy of this book by making final table in the Cardplayer January 2005 freeroll.I have to say its awesome to get a free book, autographed one at that! I have to go on to say I have a tremendous amount of respect for Barry Shulman as a player and what he has done with cardplayer, I absolutely love the site and articles. However with all of that said this book is terrible for anyone who has played cards for any amount of time. It could be the most basic book ever written about the game. I think this would be a good book if you have never played a hand of hold'em in your life. It basically walks you through odds and positioning and how to avoid common poker pitfalls which are all very important, but all this information is already saturated in other books and I was expecting more.

  10. Wouldn't A6 have a 6 high straight? Oh well doesn't really matter
Always fun to find holes in bad beat stories. My favorite was a friend told me he had 22 and the flop came AA2. The turn and river were rags, but the guy turned over AK and he took down the pot.I was like ummm dude you had a full house and that beats 3 Aces. He proceeded to dig deeper and was like WTF! You're right! The site cheated me!Uh huh.
  11. LOL yea its envy.I just downloaded Ultimatebet software. I am watching a Heads Up match between BIGWOLF and Aplusgame247. BIGWOLF is up over $55000 and Aplus keeps rebuying and rebuying, like 11 times now. This is my first time watching anything like this. Does this go on all the time???????? This is insane to me! Seriously like $50,000 profit in the last hour.
