harrington on hold'em volume 1 paying dividends

Recommended Posts

So a buddy on mine purchased Harrington on Hold'em Volume 1 for me as a Xmas gift. I had always heard good things about the book so I was more then willing to give it a chance. So the past 2 days I had finished 3 of the chapters and found all the info very interesting and informative. I have read other poker books but from very early I knew that this book was going to far exceed my expectations.I couldn't sleep this morning so I decided to join a $11+1 45 person SNG on Stars and strictly use the few tools that I had gained from reading the book to see if it could make a difference.I played tight early as I tried to get a read on the other players and after about 10 minutes I started to make my move. There was 1 super aggressive player 3 spots to my right that I knew I could bust. He had shown some weak hands but had been getting lucky and with more chips he got even more aggressive. So like Harrington said in his book, I started to re-raise the super aggressive player. 5 straight hands he raised, I re-raised and he folded then the following hand came up:me: Q :club: Q :D he raises as usually and everyone folds to me. I triple his bet and everyone folds back to him. He raises all in and I call, he turns over a monster.......6 :D 8 :D I hit trips on the flop and he is all but out and I double up.One major problem I have is when it gets close to the bubble, I tighten up. Harrington said that this was the key time to start making some moves and pick up the blinds and antes. So at the final table I start doing just that and easily increase my chip stack without ever having to put in a large amount of chips. In the end I win the tourney for a shade over $150 but it was nice to see that something I had read and taken the time to try had payed off.Moral of this post, Harrington on Hold'em will make an excellent last Xmas gift to that poker player that you can't figure out what to buy for.And just to get it out of the way, yes I plan on going pro and making millions. yes a wonderful and informative book will really help your tournament game but after reading the book and even the first three chapters these results are not typical, this is not a magic book, there is a lot of luck in tourneys and not bashing the OP but i am sure there was some luck involved.nice score OP

There is always luck involved in poker but using some of the tools in this book I think I put myself in situations to where I didn't have all my chips on the line without the best hand.

Yes-I found both of Harrington's books terrific. I had just finished reading his second book, and the very next day I played in the Legends of Poker main event at the Bicycle (won a seat in a super). So who is sitting at my table to my left? Dan the man. I laughed and told him I had just finished reading his books, so now I knew how he played. Of course, I said, you now know how I play too -- and I'm guessing you're much better at it! He laughed and throughout our time together he was a super nice guy. In a poker world quickly filling up with huge egos, it was nice to see that Dan was a real genuine guy.

I don't think the're supposed to be a Vol. 3. It's just a 2-part book from everything I've heard. The Harrington books are awesome. Plus, they are complex enough that I don't think the majority of players will shift to his outlook. There are a lot of players that want to see a lot of flops cheaply in tourneys. This isn't necessarily a disastrous strategy, but it can be trouble.

yea i've read HOH Volume ll and its done dividends to my game. I can't wait for #3 to come out. Does anyone know the official date it comes out? Its supposed to be a quiz on your poker knowledge to see how good of a player you are. Should be good, looking forward to it.
