$1/2 live octopi on the first hand.

I sat down at the MGM Grand 1/2 with $125 and wait two hands to post the big blind. Nothing goes to showdown so I don't really get a read on anyone. I pick up two 8s in the big blind. Everyone involved had me covered.Preflop:UTG limps. UTG +1 raises to $12, button calls, SB folds. I call, UTG calls.Flop: 5 4 2 (rainbow)I bet $25. 2 folds. Button asks how much I have left (about $90) and raises $50 more. I...Preflop call is fairly standard. My stack's not too deep but enough that calling $10 more to try to flop a set against 2, probably 3 opponents is alright. Flop bet is trying to evaluate the situation with the small overpair. If the raiser comes over the top I plan to give him credit for a bigger pair and drop. When I got raised on the flop I'm in a bit of a situation. Obviously I either move-in or fold. If I'm up against A5 or AT I'm about a 2-1 favorite. Against a set or bigger pair I'm 7-1 dog. Against a straight I'm near dead. The player was in the 10 seat and I couldn't really get a good look at him. When he asked how much I had left I took that as a mild sign of weakness since players are more worried about how much they can lose than what they can win - particularly since most people would be very confident with a hand that could beat mine on that flop. I figured his most likely hand was A5. And I was getting better than 2-1 that my hand was good so I moved in.I'm not real sure how to handle the hand post-flop. The lead bet seems ok but maybe there's a better option.

I like that you gave yourself a plan for getting away from 88 if UTG+1 came over the top, this often saves you money when you hit a nice flop like this with a middle pair. I think it is hard to give the button credit for an overpair here, considering he would have likely reraised with AA-JJ. It is also possible for him to have 66, or 77. He could be wild enough to make this move with AK hoping you were bluffing.I think that there is no reason to give the button credit for an overpair here unless he has TT or 99. If it were UTG+1 who had raised you I'd say fold but here you must go with this hand. Kudos to him for not reraising the big pair.

I think the key here is this is live. You're right in thinking that the, "How much do you have left?" is a sign of weakness--most the time.I think the fact that he bet 50 after we told him we had 90 left means he's telling us he's committing himself to the pot.No way does he fold to 40 more, to win 120+.If you think 88 holds up here enough, then call..but, I'm more inclined to lay it down.Overpair's are nice and all, but, you're basically committing all of your chips on the first hand out of position with a hand that could be drawing close to dead, ya know?I lean towards folding, and if he flips AK up and smiles all proud then you just say "Nice hand".
