Single Most Important Improvable Skill

Recommended Posts

I don't suspect I will get a consensus but I am curious what people see as the most important SKILL in creating a sustainable profitable poker career. How much can you improve this skill and how do you go about impoving it.

I don't think it can be narrowed down to just one skill. But limiting your negative reactions to bad beats or avoiding tilt would be a suggestion I guess.welcome to the forums :club:

I realize it can't be narrowed down to a single skill. But I am curious what people think is the single most important skill.

Having a successful and long-lasting poker career all boils down to three words: proper money managementNone of your other skills matter if you don't know how to manage your bankroll. Without proper management, you will go broke.

no, because if you suck at the game but have good money management skills you'll go broke too, just slower than if you have crappy management skills. A crappy player can luckbox a big tourney and live off the winnings and resulting endorsements of that for the rest of his life, but a crappy player with good management skills will just get slowly ground down until hes broke.

We're talking about having a successful career. Successful (imo) means financial stability without losing all of your money. It doesn't matter if you're world class or a "luckbox". If your bankroll is $50,000 and you're playing $10,000NL, you will go broke, and going broke doesn't make you a successful poker player.

but if you dont have any skill it doesnt matter whether you're playing over your head or notskill>>>>>>>>>> bankroll management in terms of importance to being a succesfful player, if you give a sucky player a $100,000 bankroll and tell him to play 10-20 and make a career of it chances are he cant do it even though hes playing with good bankroll management skills.

But he would have a much better chance than if you gave a great player a $100,000 bankroll and told him to make a career playing in the big game.

Easy. Bank roll management, next question.

I think we can already assume that the fictional player we are thinking of doesn't suck monkey balls to the point of him not being able to win a pot. We expect him to not play like Robert Varkonyi. Bank roll management is #1, no doubt about it. Because your argument of saying that he "has to know the game" can easily be countered with, "yeah, but if he knows the game and can't keep from tilting and playing above his head," money management would be more important. So assuming the fictional player can win a few pots, he needs the discipline for money management.

Keeping emotions out of decision making and slowing down.I can't tell you how many times I've seen a player take 20 seconds plus to make a preflop call/fold decision, and then make huge bets or calls deep into a hand w/o the nuts in less than 2 seconds. Use all information and take your time. Easiest skill to learn IMO.
