Why Are Most Amateur Poker Players Such Horrible People?

Recommended Posts

after a hard day of work you come home to unwind and play a little online poker. you find your seat, post your buy-in, and check out what everybody is saying. most of the time, it is the most disgusting, revolting language you could dream up, and on top of that, 99% of it is not used in a clever or humorous fashion, it's just anti-intellectual for the sake of being anti-intellectual.let's check out a full tilt poker table with a few pros playing and see what intricate strategy questions the observers have to ask now that they are actually able to get their input from a true professional:"JOHN JUANDA SUCKS COCCK""HEY MIKEY WHERES THECOCAINE????"etc.logging onto this forum, i see nothing but bad attitudes and people who have nothing nice to say, ever. it really is sickening that i consider myself part of the poker community when everyone around me truly makes me want to vomit.i am in no way prude. i am just as likely to curse or say something somewhat inappropriate as anybody else, so this is not a holier-than-thou issue. i will admit i have a sick sense of humor, but there is a time and a place for it.it seems to me for such a gentlemen's game, where traits such as intellect and thought out strategy are rewarded immensely, all i see is a bunch of undereducated pieces of trash that act like petulant babies. something tells me i would not see this kind of behaviour at an online chess game, for example. so why does poker bring in the dreck of society that gives me the ****** chills?

So, you wanna go out sometime? You know, nothing big, just maybe dinner and a movie over at my place?Seriously though, people are tough behind computer screens. It's always the case. I'm apt to make fun of someone if they do/say something stupid, but other then that I pretty much found my way around here without really rubbing anyone the wrong way.

What do you expect? Most of the railers are 12 year old kids with nothing better to do.

i really enjoy the banter me and my friends have at the table, or the witty comments displayed at your average skilled players' table. to those that actually put in effort to try to explain it from your perspective, awesome. i figured that most would try to simplify this question and attack me, but the fact is it is an open ended question posed to provoke thought. i was curious if this cross-section of people was actually just a representation of society as a whole, but i guess this thread just sucks donkey balls.

1. Tony G plays a huge psychological game that just wears on his opponents after the constant badgering and shenanigans he pulls.2. I now turn my player and observer chat off. I'm not at the table to make friends or to have witty exchanges with the people I'm playing with, so why bother.3. Most of the people whose game negatively suffers from online crap talk are weak minded.

thought: most people suck. poker players probably suck just the same as other people, but when you're around them all the time you get a biased sample and think they are all terrible, especially when its solely the buttholes that you're exposed too.if you worked at a 1 hr. photo lab you would think all soccer moms were the worst people in the world.

Mostly what I see online is people taking out their frustrations by demeaning another player. It's very easy when you are just typing to an unseen person. This is usually a way for the player with shaken confidence to justify his play and build up his esteem by tearing another player down and proving that he is superior. In my experience this is not necessarily a poker thing as much as it is an online thing. I play online chess and even experience the same type of banter there. People get online and it is an outlet to act a way that they could never act in most other situations. If you met these people on the street they would probably seem like very nice and sociable people.Just my .02.

That's true--it wears on people. And it wears on most people watching the play the wrong way. Mike Sexton is right, that such behavior is bad for poker.Stu Ungar was one of the most notorious trash-talkers when talking to the dealers--I saw him do it. Player's like Tony G. think they can disrespect others at the table or on the board, or online, and that they'll win because of it. But I doubt Tony G. talks that way all the time--only when it's safe, on TV, when he knows the player's won't trash talk back at him. I was waiting for Perry to reply "Shut the f**k up, fatman--but was disappointed that he let Tony G get away with it and limp off stage.

I notice this a lot even at low stakes tables I play at. I like to chat a lot but never insult people. Everytime there is a suck out or whatever someone always insults a player who makes a bad move. It seems to me that gambling no matter what game it is brings out the inner a_sshole in people. It happens online and at casino's. People act differently when they gamble then they do in real life.
