My Very First Poker Game

Recommended Posts

I've been watching and learning about the game for a while now. I finally decided it was time to put a little money down on the table, and yes, I played my very first-ever poker game recently!I work at a theatre, and one of the actors has been teaching me some, in addition to books, stuff on this forum, TV, etc. He and another couple of actors got a game going: $5 buy-in with rebuys, friendly game, break for a little pot smoking. I figured it was a $5 lesson for me, so I bought in.Of course, you know how it went: I Baracked. I was a stupid card rack all night long. Even though I kept trying to fold when I was the big blind and everyone had limped in (and they kept having to politely tell me that I could see a flop for free if I wanted), I wound up the big stack along with an actor who plays online. I take zero credit for it, it was all just really ridiculous dumb luck. Once I decided to play 7-4 offsuit, just to see HOW to play it. Flop came 7-4-3, of course. Shit like that. On the last hand, everyone takes their whole dollar winnings out, then there's a straight seven-card deal to see who wins the change. The poor guy who taught me, who'd already rebought once, had the lead with ace-high through six cards. Last card of the deal, I made a straight. Just head-slapping stuff. Ultimately, I came home with $13 from my very first game.My husband's aunt is a smart woman who likes a little gambling herself. I told her and she said, "That's the worst thing that could happen, because now you'll never give it up, and you'll chase another game like that for years."Mind you, I am trying to learn. I'm studying carefully, and other than being a complete moron about the big blind, I think my betting was relatively good for a novice. In one hand the guy put down a bet like he'd made a flush, and I thought for a minute, said, "I'm not feelin' it," and called him. He said, "You do have pretty good instincts -- I was trying to make you believe."For the rest of you, take a trip down memory lane. What happened in your very first game?

Solid story. Most poker stories, especially from beginners are dreadfully boring, but this is quite well written. As an aside, I disagree with the bolded. I think that most or at least a lot of people who become successful in poker ran pretty far above expectation when the first started out. It gives you an immediate interest and fondness for the game and given the right attitude, this interest can lead to quite a bit of learning. I know that I ran ridiculously hot for my first 3 or 4 home games and it really fueled my interest in the game. Now, after a lot of studying and a little experience, I have achieved some success in the game. You seem to have a solid outlook on the game and also seem to be intelligent, so with work I am sure you can achieve whatever level of success that you want. I'd suggest you eventually look into more forms of poker than just NLHE and find a few that suit you to experiment with. I'd also suggest you browse or take part in our strat forums and the various challenge threads. We have some very good poker minds on FCP so long as you can avoid the drama and/or filter out the garbage posts.Good luck with your newly budding poker career. I hope you have continued success.

SouthernBuddhist is one of like 5 people ever who I liked where the reason for my liking them wasn't that they were a horrible person. She just flatly seems likable without like brandishing it at you.Two things, SB: Dink is correct. And given what I know about you, if you're willing to work hard, I picture you'll enjoy the endless education process of the game. Second, how had you never played poker? What brought you to this board, then?

1) I agree completely with your assessment of SB, though I probably like more "likable" people than you do.2) I doubt I am one of the other 4 on your list.3) I'm going to guess a sexual crush on Daniel Neg developed while she was watching the WPT with her husband, and that's what drew her here. I know that's what drew me here.

I, too am in the SB fan club and posted about my crush in a blog thread before reading these. It's really on odd dynamic, though. Somehow such a nice likable girl drew a bunch of assholes as her supporters. I mean I'm not quite on the Dutch/Mac level when it comes to amoral forum degeneracy, but I've got to be pretty solidly on the asshole end of the spectrum. I wonder who else she will attract; Wang? SuitedAces?

Don't worry, Dink, you'll get there. You keep helping my LHE game, I'll keep corrupting you with strange pornography and my obsession with pedophilia.

The thing of it is, despite the fact she is irrepressibly nice, she also has an appreciation for my degenerate sense of humor. I suspect it's because she's kinky, but might just be wish thinking on my part.

If this turns into a gangbang, I get the EP credit.Edit: an important subtext note: this post unintentionally reveled that Dutch doesn't realize without consideration that sex sometimes happens without being filmed.

This is intriguing, more to come????????????
In my case, the flirting will be harmless and is quite likely to continue. In Mac's case the motives behind the flirting are dubious, probably sinister, and almost certain to continue. So yes, I'd say more to come.

Yeah, like I said, I'm harmless. And Mac's sort of lust does not recognize adultery as a boundary, for moral reasons or otherwise. So this is largely irrelevant.

how can you be anything but with that cute little knit hoodie thing
Haha. That is my girlfriend. She claims her hat was being blown off by the wind and that that was not a pose. I'm skeptical to say the least.

Good read right there. No wonder I like your strat posts. Though I would replace "dubious" with "fun and awesome", which I don't find to be mutually exclusive with sinister.

Oh man, another good read. Though, in my defense, she's a buddhist, so how strict could her marriage vows really be?

Oh I was in no way judging. Swing away, big man, swing for the fences.

Best thread ever, obv!!!!BigD called it. My husband doesn't watch, though, just me. However, he's Lithuanian by heritage, so Daniel, being Romanian, looks very much like a little eff-able blond doll version of my dark beloved James. They're both rocking that Middle-Europe thing I apparently melt for.Why do I love BigD? Too much acid in college, probably. Yeah, that and a little kink.[Edit: boy, did I apparently rejoin the forum at the right moment. I guess absence makes the heart grow fonder, having my very own crush thread now.]

I'd like to go on record as saying I was making borderline inappropriate comments to you before it was cool.

Thank you for starting the love-in, and that second line is the genius that is Dirty Dutch.
