Fleung22 - Macau Poker Report

Recommended Posts

hello boys and girls,so it's interesting how Royal Tour was actually right for once. Macau's poker community is really growing. If you read my previous thread a while back then you know that I was playing these PokerPro machines at Star World and it was like the speed of online but in a live setting.Strangely enough it wasn't an American casino such as the Venetian, Wynn or MGM that introduced live poker...it was the infamous Stanley Ho's new Grand Lisboa. So after hearing a brazillion complaints about how slow the live games are and how the dealers are misdealing and inconsistent with rules the players all slowly gravitated to Lisboa and the true live game. The rake is definitely better at Lisboa and it has the usual surroundings of a Sports Betting area and Craps but frankly, I tried to hold onto the PokerPro for as long as I could. The sheer amount of hands I was getting was AWESOME.The bigger games seem to have grown every 4-6 weeks as well. The biggest game used to be 10-20 HKD, then 25-50 and now there's 50-100.Games are sickly soft and every single one of my Toronto FCP brothers would kill the games. Everyone except for Teddy of course :PAnyways, after seeing the game grow exponentially in terms of players there's obviously a market for it. It's not just expats either. There are plenty of weathy chinamen who are just sick of playing baccarat. They want to buy in for 30k because they're just used to making big bets. It's more of this rather than skill that drives the big games.I've changed my resume to focus solely on a job in the poker industry now. Downfall will be that I can't play in the casino I work for but I don't think I'm cut out to go pro for the long haul. I just don't have the discipline to play my A-game 50 weeks a year for the rest of my life. After killing the game in February I feel like my focus is already slipping. I'll play great one day and then sloppy the next.Anyhow, I was thinking that if I could design the perfect poker setting it would be a combination of the Bellagio and Venetian in Vegas. An area actually set aside for poker as well as tournaments. Also, I'd want to have a room specifically for the big game like Bobby's room and have it endorsed by a big name pro...for example, Johnny Chan since he's Chinese and well...we are in the Far East.Wouldn't you know it. I just saw Johnny Chan in the Lisboa poker area 2 weeks ago. He didn't play...I'd imagine the stakes are wayyyy to small for him but he spent quite a bit of time just watching the action with his wife. A few guys went to shake his hand but Johnny made it obvious he didn't want attention. I had a similar experience during the wsop in 2006 so I didn't even bother.I spoke with the floor managers and asked if Chan was here on business they seemed convinced that he was just here on vacation and was more interested in other VIP gaming. They didn't say which game but I've heard he's a fan of Pai Gow.That's my little update for poker in Macau for now (hey, that rhymes!) :)For my Canadian FCPers...I am doing a 3-city tour right now.Probably be at Vancouver's RiverRock cardroom on March 26 from about 11 am to early evening. Whether I get another chance to visit the 604's finest again is unknown. On March 29th I'm heading back to Toronto for an unknown period of time. Party at the Fox & Firkin on John/Adelaide that night begining at 8 pm. I'll probably support the cash game in west GTA and also throw a small tournament. If you're on my facebook poker group (fcp-x) you'll get an invite for the tournament. Look for the Super Spanky Special IIIHope the rest of FCP crews down south are doing good as well.Take care, B) fleung22

Sending this thread to Derek, we've been debating the legitimacy of playing in Macau. Actually, more the well-being of players in Macau.Fred, do you know how much (if at all) of an influence the Triads have in the casinos in Macau? When me and Derek were discussing this, he was saying that Macau now = very similar to Vegas back when the Mafia had a huge stake in the city. But then I know jack about Macau, so I'll go to you in the field for the report.

If you're actually in Macau and bring up the word "triad" everyone will pretty much pretend like they didn't hear anything. As recent as 1998 this island was still pretty bad. I mean, at the end of the day it's just business and the triads just "tax" you as a casino. Unfortunately, you'd have your bad "employees" and blood would get spilt on the streets. I remember my visit in 1999...a nail bomb kill a triad leader, his body guard and injured 20 people on the street. In more recent years (we'll say post 2005) it's much much better. The american casinos bring a new breed of businesses here and how is the triad gonna touch a corporation of stock holders and execs? There isn't exactly a single owner like Stanley Ho in previous decades.Yeah, there's been some mysterious "jumpings" from the Sands and a few other deaths but I don't think it's out of character for a world of gambling and sex. There's gonna be gambling problems, loan sharks and muscle to collect. Either collect money or your life. The mainstay for triad cash is definitely the sex industry but if Mr. Happy is happy then the triads are happy because dat meen yew pahy munee mista!I don't think there's anything to worry about.Stay in big shiny hotels and shuttles...go to the high end saunas...you'll be fine.

funny, i'll bet you can find these exact words several times over in these forums.
I'm not sure if that's a brag or a beat for you.I mean think about it. If people say that over and over again, it means that you're constantly wrong and still surprise people when you get things right :club:

np I admit to have watched one too many triad movies myself.it's like any other place in the US. when you're in LA don't visit Compton. when you're in Vegas don't wander Freemont by yourself at night.when you're in Macau stay away from places that look scary. if you're into the gambling, entertainment and sex though...it's all in the same area and loaded with tourists, cops and security.the Macau government has worked hard to remove those worries in recent years.

Fred: I'm not on your facebook group but I'm interested in playing in a tourney if you have seats open.
matt, lemme confirm the tournament and place first. I'm sick of crowded tables so I'm probably gonna limit it to 8 players per table.if it's 2-tables then I'm gonna offer the seats to players who have come out before. I'm all about loyalty. if it's 3-tables then I'll open it to the entire fcp-x and whoever.no worries, I'll only give the loyalty card for 2 days. most of these mofos are slow to register so you should be fine if you're around the forum.plus you know teddy so that's kind've a plus...kind've :club:
