how do i become a better limit hold em player?

Recommended Posts

About 2 weeks ago i decided that i really wanted to play limit hold em and become a winning player at it. I bought small stakes holdem(read it twice already) and joined this forum. Im playing .25/.50 with my 300 dollar bankroll which i built playing mostly sit and goes. For you experts who consistently win at limit hold em, i am looking for any advice you can give me. What can i do to become better at this game and consistently win? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

To start off, forget everything you thought you knew about NL, this is a completely different game (ok, don't forget everything you knew about NL, just some of it)After you are done purging yourself of NL, learn everything there is to know about pot odds, implied odds, expected value and every other math based part of poker. This is the life blood of the game I affectionately call limit holdemOnce you have learned to calculate all of these very complicated statistics in your head in seconds, you will be ready for limit holdem. BUT NOT A SECOND BEFORE THATEventually, while you sleep, you will be running through hands you played during the day. You will start thinking to yourself, was my bet on the turn a +EV bet or was I not getting enough to make that bet/call/raise/whatever. Even while you are on the crapper you will be thinking about the odds of particular hands, you will become a master of the implied odds, being able to roughly estimate the benefit of hitting your draw and getting paid. Oh boy, you are in for a world of fun, welcome to limit poker.Good luck and keep up the grind[Edit] Oh, read Smash's experiment too, (even though he fudged it a little) this is a great lesson in limit poker

the main thing, is the game is much more mathematical, and you jam the pot with a great hand, and get out if you know your beat. also at micro limits you really cant bluff anyone away from a pot unless maybe your heads up or three way and its 4th street or later

Four things that will definately help you become a better limit HE player:1) Read. I know you said that you already read SSHE twice, which is great, but be sure to keep reading it over and over whenever you get a chance. I've read SSHE about 20 times and everytime I've learned something new or understood a concept better. Some other good poker books you might want to check out are Theory of Poker by Sklansky, Hold 'em Poker by Sklansky, and The Psychology of Poker by Alan N. Schoonmaker. 2) Discuss your hands with people. Whether here, or on a different forum, or with friends, get help/comments on any questionable hands you played.3) Play, play, play! Playing/gaining experience is obviously the best way for you to improve your poker skills so play like crazy! Just be sure to be patient before moving up limits, the last thing you want to do is play at a level you aren't comfortable at and end up blowing away your hard earned bankroll.4) Play at Party Poker. Well this won't make you a better poker player but Party Poker is THE place to play online poker, it's by far the easiest place to win the most money. Tons of fish everywhere, tons of games going all the time, it's great. Start at the $0.5/$1 tables and work your way up.You might also want to get pokertracker if you don't have it yet, it's a nifty little program that lets you track all your poker related stats. A must for a serious online player, it's probably the best poker-related $50 you'll ever spend.Oh and be patient, the swings in online limit poker will be pretty tough to handle but if you can get yourself to consistently play strong poker you WILL end up a winning player in the long run.Good Luck!
