and after 3 days, he is risen!

If you are paying $20 for a haircut, I imagine people assume you did it yourself anyway.

Pocket change cost me my first and only black girlfriend.   It was in the middle of a roaring poker boom and I was flush in ways most men don't even bother dreaming of. Money, it was like dirt to me

Brvy, you’re a sweetheart, but there is zero chance I would ask for any help. Haven’t as of yet. I am not a fan of asking for things. I also am too old to help someone move or do a day’s manual labor. I will help someone move something, but not everything

Strat, it definitely is a labor of misery and love. Once everything is

the way we want it, I think there will be a deeper sense of pride than if we hadn’t done anything. That being said, a contractor and his people are doing the heavy lifting. We want it done right. We don’t really want to test our skills the first time out on our shit.

Napa, I wasn’t going for the weight joke, because, you know. But I wasn’t sure if you saw the FB post and wanted to mess with you about knowing your horsey’s name. My tubby ass ain’t getting on nothing but a Clydesdale. And even then, not likely. I’d feel too bad about it.

Essay, are you a social butterfly when watching the game with clients?

Hank, congrats and all of that.

Brvy you are welcome to come and help me with whatever house I end up buying, whenever that may be.

The house I’m looking at later this week will need a kitchen remodel, a bathroom remodel, possible a new garage or an additional stall, possible new deck, concrete removed, 3 seasons porch torn down, basement re-finish, might build a Murphy bed in the guest room, a dog door installed, and lots of paint.

It’s a keeper.

Edit: because it sounds like I’m looking at a shithole. It’s a perfectly acceptable house as is...I would just like to make some improvements eventually

looks like a nice place to flop after work. i had a beneficiary, last year, request 40k for a downpayment for a house in MPLS. they had picked out a $300,000 place and wanted to put down 60. i said no for several reasons, but the house they picked out was similar to that one, but a little bigger.

napa let me give you some advice that really worked well for me.

what's the first thing you do after you buy a new house?

Nothing.

Unless you've owned a house before or unless the condition of a room, roof, or other item is dilapidated and NEEDS replaced don't do any sort of remodel for minimum 6 months (better a year) unless you've baked the reno cost into your mortgage loan. See how you live in it before making any significant or structural changes so you KNOW (not think) what you want to do and only have to do it once. a reno should add value not jeopardize it. like a murphy bed, it might be too kitschy and could hurt resale. protect ya neck son.

sound advice and good to hear from somebody wise as I have been telling myself that I'll wait at least a year before making any major changes or buying any "real" furniture for these exact reasons.

But for the record, I would just bolt the murphy bed to the wall and it wouldn't be any more permanent than a wall mounted TV. I just think it might be a decent use for the room since I'll rarely have visitors that would be staying the night and then I could use the room as an office/dog room. But I know my dog would just lay on the bed all day and I don't want that for the guest bed. But I like the idea of putting the doggie door on that door to the outside and letting him let himself in and out during the day and being able to confine him to that room in case he gets super dirty so he doesn't ruin everything.

And one of my best friends is an interior designer so any major changes will have to be approved by her.

Counter point: This is your god damn house. Your castle, your domain. If you can't do crack pot renovations that you like here, where can you do them? Worry less about how shit will effect resale value, and worry most about how any changes will effect your day to day mood and happiness.

Hmm...sorry, Hank, changed my mind. I’m putting secret passages and trick doors everywhere.

Whatever gave you the impression that I wasn't all about secret passages? Gotta keep the hookers tied up some where.

Just because I think murphy beds are stupid...

I am already so very tired of this process and I can not wait for it to be over. I might buy this house just because it hits most of my points and knowing that I’ll most likely be able to sell it for at worst a small loss in two years.

We’re having a stock the bar party this weekend for some friends that are getting married.

Any ideas for a <$50 bottle of booze that might be seen as unique and thoughtful? I don’t know anybody coming up from Chicago in the next few days so Jeppson’s Malort is out of the picture.

I’ve noticed that certain tequilas (I hate tequila) have interesting bottling. From skulls, to sombreros to dia de los muertos type characters.

Otherwise, get something they will know and appreciate. Overpaying for a bourbon you are aware of when they like SoCo and Dr Pepper isn’t prudent.

I like this stock the bar party. I have already stocked mine myself, but I could always use more.

I am Team McGee when it comes to house repairs. Don’t sink half he cost of the house into renovations for something you won’t be in in 3 years, but you have to make it livable, and most any upgrades will help in resale value. Just don’t overpay for a clunker. Stick to your guns and let the bubble burst. Although, it’s not really a bubble, more an inventory problem.

I’d say we are gonna drop at least $40k into our Reno once it’s all over, but that includes new sprinkler system, mucho sod, fixing the leak in the pool skimmer area, heating the jacuzzi ($3k fix) $2k to trim our 3 oak trees, fixing or removing our screen room, etc etc etc. we blew out walls, moved toilet, made a huge master shower, laid all new awesome flooring, redid the other bathroom, pressure cleaned the roof. Just tons of shit you don’t realize you have to do. But we are going for perfect, not just acceptable

You’ll get a priority list of importance

Love it. I am free in early July for at least a week.

I have all the tools needed for roofing as well, if you needed a roof.

What kind of situation are these people in where someone can tell them how to spend their money? Are these trusts set up by other people? As a general rule, are they people that would have blown through an entire inheritance in a few weeks without a guy like you running interference?

I would be happy to buy a bottle and ship it to you. I could do the same with something like New Glarus (although that's not liquor, just unique).

Aww, heck. I’m out of town that week.

The listing doesn’t say the roof age but from the pictures it certainly looks it’s closer to needing to be replaced than it is to being new. Fortunately, it’s a pretty simple roof and I’d imagine we could get it done in a weekend. I say “we” but I mostly mean my brother and dad. Maybe some friends if they feel like it.

The trust was created in the 50s by her great grandfather and she, and her brother and her father only have access to the trust through the discretion of the trustee (the bank). I act on behalf for the trustee.

But your first question is my biggest frustration with any trust beneficiary - it’s not their money. It’s the trusts money and they cannot just get whatever thy want. Most of them refuse to accept this simple fact.

It’s especially difficult when the person asking will receive half of it outright when her father dies, so long as she is alive. I had to tell her purchasing a house, in my opinion, wasn’t in her best interest. You can imagine how she felt about my assessment.

What Kanye is doing on Twitter is fascinating to me. Most times people accuse a black person of saying these types of things of schilling for white people fo make money or gain fame, but Kanye clearly has more than enough of those. I would love to know what started this barrage of tweets.

Certainly you are correct from a legal perspective, but hopefully, you can also understand why they think their claim is stronger than yours, and view you as the enemy.

I'm also anxious to hear about why you didn't think it was in her best interest. Did you make that decision based on market conditions or something else?

Also, feel free to start talking about some other situation. I could read about your clients all day.

My understanding is that trusts that rely on any sort of discretion from the trustee are nowadays strongly discouraged. First, the bank just doesn’t want the legal liability and compliance workload, and second, it encourages this unhealthy parent/child dynamic (with a stranger acting as parent).

At least, I’m assuming he’s referring to some kind of HEMS trust. I have heard of people burning down their existing house to get the trustee to sign off on the ‘emergency’ portion of HEMS to get the down payment for the new place. I’m sure that’s the outlier situation, but an example of the bad incentives created with trustee discretion.

My opinion, if one of your kids is a bad egg, you just structure it so they get a fixed amount each year, and hope they don’t destroy themselves. Offer up more flexibility to the responsible kids if you want.

My favorite asinine trust provision is the stipulation that all “income” go to one party, and remainder to another. Literally the portfolio manager can just build a bond portfolio with 8%+ yield and deplete the corpus pretty rapidly.

Well he does have an album (or two) about to drop but I'm sure you're right. He doesn't care if they sell. If there is anything rich people hate it's getting richer.
