About Cutting Deals

Recommended Posts

Say you're the tournament chip leader and it's down to 4-handed and everyone agrees to cut a deal. Say you have 2 options:Option 1PokerStars style chip chop. Everyone is guaranteed 4th place money and the remaining prize pool is split up according to stack size.Option 2The total prize pool left (4th thru 1st) is split up according to stack size.Option 2 is always preferable if you're the chip leader right? And conversely, if you're the short stack, Option 1 is preferable, no?

Why would the short stack ever agree to option 2, since that will, a majority of the time, give them less than 4th place guaranteed money?

oops misread, my bad if i had to cut a deal it would be the option where i could make more money so it all depends how big of a chiplead it is and what money i was getting

Not necessarily. Imagine the stacks sizes were 100, 101, 102 and 103...or soething realistic like 300, 200, 175, 150.Anyway, the reason I'm asking is I was thinking last night about the deal I cut at the Mirage when I was in Vegas during the WSOP and was concerned for a brief second that I had gotten stiffed. We did Option 2 btw.

i dont like deals anyway (not that ive ever gotten far enough to make one) but i think you should just play it out

if you are the chip leader you could always ask the others to give you more than the option 1 totals. option 2 ussually wouldnt be possible because of the reason already stated. if everyone is reasonably close in chips you can do what i like to do and chop the majority of the prize pool evenly but leave 10-20% for the eventual winner. i find after a deal like this everyone at the table relaxes and plays real loose so if you feel you are a superior player you can take advantage.

For me, it depends a lot on the other players. If they play horribly (often that means too tight when 4 handed) I'll be much less inclined to make a deal if I have the lead. But if you can swing a deal where you get a huge share because of your chip lead, then by all means do so.

Don't feel that way. It's the same way you feel after you buy a car...you always could have gotten just a LITTLE more off of em.

Only way i ever deal is if its heads up and even chips...50 50 split. If im confident i can take the person down i dont even think about it.

I have been fortunate to play in a few tourneys where I have been able to make it to the final table and I always look to chop. Anything can happen, and since I am playing for the cash if I think I can lock in a few more dollars I will take the chop. I guess an example why not to a few months back I made a $10 final table on Party out of 1800 people. First was 4,500 and 10th was around $280.00. I barely had enough chips to call the big blind and I was pushing for a split. Well I was pretty happy to pick up 1,400 for 3rd place after the chip leader denied the chop. But overall I still think anything can happen when u get to the final table, and even if you are the best player you may not win.

Almost all deals are horrible for the short stack, especially the way Stars does them. Usually they are giving up the chance at a lot more money for a minimal increase in payout.
If bankroll is a concern, and that extra $200 or whatever will make a difference for you - a chop is never a bad thing. Especially with the blind structures as they are, you're in a crapshoot at the FT anyway - so taking the few extra hundred as the short stack is not always a bad thing. Then again, I'm a big soggy vag and usually agree to deals once were under 4 players :club:

I'm not against making deals in certain situations, but never as a significant short stack. If the money is important to me, I'm more likely to push for a deal as the CL then as a short stack.

If there's a short stack that significant, then we're playing till he's gone. Then we'll talk about a chop. I can't see splitting 4 ways anyway, unless there is some major bank on the line. Option 2 makes the most sense though.

I've never chopped online. I don't think any site I've played on even allows that. But B&M I'm always open to it. Usually when it gets down to 4 or 5 the blinds are so high you can go from CL to short stack with a quickness. Obviously I'm not referring to big tourneys. Just weekly casino deals. Anyway if I'm CL I make sure to get mine.
