I have decided to give playing poker for a living a shot.
The headline at the top of your blog made me chuckle, nice to see that this decision wasn't entirely your own. FIRED!!!

I've been deciding this for a while ;)It was a self inflicted firing, I just stayed home and never called my boss. He's a sniveling retard with the IQ of mayonnaise and I couldn't stand working under him anymore.

Comment made. This is just...man, work 20 hours a week making $9 an hour at 7-Eleven or something. Your consistent win rate at your stakes would have to be unbelievable to support yourself and make notable increases to your br.

Good luck, will be interesting to read your blogs on how this goes.I'd recommend reading pokerfox's articles on bankroll management on pocket5's.

I have decided to give playing poker for a living a shot.I will be documenting all my results at http://spence2020.blogspot.com/I would go on, but the blog says most of what has to be said at this point. I will probably have an abundance of hand histories on the site so you all can gawk at my play.May god have mercy on my soul :club:
Good luck man!

Agreed. Work for a temp company. Get a call and have some work? Go to work. No call and no work? Play poker. You'll move around a lot and you might find yourself in a company you really like. If not, you keep the bills paid and get to play poker. Win win.

gl with that yo, but i agree with some posters and the guy that made the comment on your blog. Get a part time job somewhere, Work 15-20 hours per week, and then play poker until you get like a 15-20k bkrl

If you could average $100 day playing NL and maybe 10bb's/day playing $2/4, you're making about 29K a year before taxes. You can just add/subtract to that estimate based on your bankroll. Seriously, good luck man, but I think you should go with MtDesMoines.

at my job, i basically make $100 per day, and it is enough to support myself, have entertainment, and play poker, although the bkrl i am currently playing on i won from a freeroll off ub. I won a tec, turned it into tourney cash, got it up to $100 with still $60 left. Played in 2 $30 head up matches, and lost both to really bad suckouts. But i still had my $100, and now up to about $350anyway, the point is, you probably have to make at least $100 per day to survive, probably more, the cost of living where i live is relativly low

Thanks for the input everybody, I am adding $4000 to the roll, but am goign to start out playing 3/6 SH Shorthanded is easily my best game, I was just going to try full to cut down on variance, but that'd hurt my winrate over time so I have gone to what im best at.

I have to confess that this is the way I felt about most of the bosses I had when I was your age, too. But a couple observations: 1) anyone who's managing someone your age/experience level is in a 'trial position' themselves ... they make endless mistakes and the range of poor judgment they seem capable of exhibiting is limitless. Low level anything is generally misery for *everyone.*However, it's not all darkness and doom. Here's a little life advice: it just takes time to hurdle over the "entry-level manager" and to get to a boss who knows WTF he/she's doing, and to be treated decently. The way over the hurdle is a positive attitude and a record of success in spite of the hurdles. Careers, much like college, are mostly tests of endurance. You've heard the old saying that 99% of life is showing up. Show up. Do your job. Admit your failures when called on them, but focus on doing things you seem to succeed at. You'll get noticed and suddenly find yourself working at a higher level, for a human being you can trust, and you'll say to yourself, "What was I so worried about?" Again, I SERIOUSLY recommend the temp route. It really does let you try on bosses like shirts in a department store. Don't like who's signing your time card? Call the temp people and ask for a change. They won't give you a change? Change temp people. At your age, you have no experiences to point to. You have no track record. Your only power at your age is your immense freedom to explore. Utilize it to its fullest.

Im pretty lucky when it comes to my career/poker playing. Im an electrical engineer and I work three 12hr days a week, mon/tues/wed. On Thurs/Fri I play poker at the local B&M. Weekends are for the fiance, sometimes we go to the casino. I dont ever play online so I dont play on work days. I make good money with my job now so everything I make playing poker goes into my BR. The only things that have come out are the engagement ring I got my fiance, the down payment for my house and all the furniture/appliances for it. I am now playing for a motorcycle paid for in cash without killing my BR. GL, I also suggest getting a temp job.

sorry to rain on your parade, but if you have all these questions then obviously you are not ready to be playing poker for a living. You should have gone into this with a plan and knowing all of the above.i think to make a healthy living, you need to be playing at least 5/10, but would be a lot more healthier playing anything above. and I also hope you have a nice rainy day fund. Other than that, GL

Ok heres my advice. I like the temp idea for now good route i did it for awhile after college trying to figure out what i wanted to do and what I liked in a company. If you seriously want to play poker for a living, 1 go get poker tracker if you can't spend 55 on it well you don't have the money to play poker for a living. 2. Play a few thousand hands or a few 10's of thousand hands. And a few hundred or more MTT's and SNG's. And figure out your ROI(return on investment) or in cash games how much money your really make/hour or per/100 hands. Then you will have a good idea of what you really need to play for a living. Right now you might think you are not on an up swing but how do you know you have no real data that you speak of. 3. What happens when you have a losing month on a 1800/4000 bank roll or two. and you have no money to pay rent/food/utiltes, how will your roommate feel about that, you could but him in a tough spot without having enough living expenses set aside. 4. Women Don't like getting hitched with low stakes poker players(well not most) they like some stablity in there lives and poker doesn't always have a lot of that. Remember if someday you want a family you will have to support them and now might be a good time to devolpe a 100% win rate skill. ok 67% after taxes :club:

Thanks for all the good input. I know I'm a winning poker player, i have 100,000's of hands on poker office.I know I should have planned more, but it's not the end-all, I'm just giving it a try. After this next semester I'll be graduated from college with a Computer Information Systems degree, and then I'll reevaluate my situation.I am really thankful for all the truly valuable advice and I agree what I'm doing is pretty rough.Unfortuanately I've signed up for just about every site so I'll have a hard time finding one to do rakeback on.Even if I'm just able to break even and not really advance I think I'll know that I can make a good secondary income from poker.Thread Hijack Warning.Anybody have any info on that 100% rakeback site? Is it legit?

Are you talking about worldpx? The 100% rakeback is legit, although the short-handed table availability isn't great for multi-tabling. My main complaint is that they don't have short-handed tables for every level. They have it for 1/2, 3/6, and 10/20, but 2/4 and 5/10 are only full-ring. You can make 3BB/100 in rakeback playing short-handed 3/6, and I get an an average of 130 hands/hour per table (it's 5-max and the action moves very quickly). So, if you 3-table short-handed 3/6, you can make $70/hour by breaking even (assuming you can find 3 short-handed tables, that is).
