A Tournament Ending I Bet You've Never Seen

Recommended Posts

I am the tournament director in the casino where I work. We have a weekly tournament that averages 50 players. Here's how it ended last night...At the final table, I notice that a young player, with the chip lead, is refusing to chop and is playing aggressively, raising in late position (gasp). Eventually, we get down to the final two, the young guy and a nice, elderly man that I'll call Mr. Tim for this story. First place paid $1,200 and second was around $750.I explain to them how the blinds and button works for heads up, The young guy has about 120,000 chips and Mr, Tim has 60, 000 chips. The blinds are 5k/10k.First hand, young guy moves all in preflop and Mr. Tim folds. Mr. Tim also stands up.I move the button to Mr. Tim and tell him he has the small blind for 5k.Mr. Tim : I'm not playing anymore.Me: Huh?Mr. Tim: That guy's an asshole, and I'm not playing anymore.Me: Are you saying that you're quitting, taking second place money and giving him first?Mr. Tim: Yes, I'm not playing with the sonofabitch.Me: OK, gentlemen, follow me and I'll get you paid.

I had something kinda similar. Went to the casino on my 21st birthday for my first ever live tournament. It drew a massive field of 24 players who all put up $45 for their shot at a $300 first prize. I made it to heads up and somehow the fact that it was my 21st birthday got brought up, and the other guy said you can have first and that was that! I bought McDonalds for myself on the way home with my extra winnings. what a great birthday

what did he do wrong? Too aggressive for Mr Tim?
He did nothing wrong. He was annoying and aggressive, but not wrong.

sounds like that's not right. Being overly aggressive is a crime around older people. That punk should learn to respect his elders.

Which is why I find amusement in going to the 1-2 game and raising 75%+ of the my hands during the "senior circuit" hours. Call it nutbarring if you will :club:

18BB's on the felt and he couldn't be ****ed to just shove every hand til he either won or lost? It would take all of a minute or two. Stupid old man.

the # 1 rule of the game is patience , all he had to do was wait for the right time to call his all in. the other night I got a little bent out of shape because Kobe was shoving on me all the time, but you know he was right, I wasn't patient enough, plus I wasn't calling him when I should have. It taught me something about my game, as well not to be totally intimdiated by a big stack. Its calling when the time is right, and making the right move at the right time. One hand I had pocket 88's I reraised him and he shoved all in on me, on his 4 bet I folded. He told me I had him beat. But my thought was even if he had ace rag he would have won the flip and I would have lost, but you can't go by that fear. If you lose on the flop you still went in with the better odds.It was a good HU match even tho I lost AK vs his crap call

regardless of the blinds, and chip stack it's still possble to come backthat guy gave up without a fighting chance, all it takes is one or 2 double upsMax had me down 3:1 HU and I came back and beat him, so it can be done

I get yelled at by old people for not chopping blinds. Apparently this is bad etiquette?
In some places (maybe all), if you chop the blinds, you don't lose anything, and the house doesn't get a rake.I don't know how much it has to do with etiquette, but most people will get pissed if you don't chop.
