Did I Miss Opportunity At River Bet?

Recommended Posts

So Idk this was kind of a weird hand for me in a tournament I was playing tonight. I feel like I played it okay, but I don't know if I played it too nittish or if it was okay to just check down the river with my hand.

I am in the cutoff, Villian is sitting directly to the right of me. I have 6600 in chips, he has 10,800. Blinds are 120-240 (it's a turbo tournament, 12 minute blind levels). Villian opens the pot with a limp, I put in a raise before the flop to 560. Button folds. Small and Big Blind folds and the Villian just smooth calls. Now up to this point he had been playing INCREDIBLY tight. ABC poker, hasn't stepped out of line, and I hadn't see him play anything but premium hands. No C-betting, no aggression unless he has a premium hand so I have him on a pretty small range of good starting hands, especially with the limp to open the pot.

Flop comes out 6c-As-4s. Villian checks the flop, I bet 900 into a pot of 1480. He snap calls without any hesitation. At this point I really put him on a premium A, potentially a flush draw.

The turn peals off the 7d. Villian checks the turn. I bet 2200 into a pot with 3280 into it now. He smooth calls again. At this point, when he calls I am definitely thinking I am beat. I know that this is very hard to think considering I'm being a set of 4's, 6's, 7's, AQ, or AK with the range of hands I am putting him on pre-flop because of how tight he has played thus far, so I think I am in trouble.

The river comes the Kh. He checks again. I just was not really sure what I should do at this point in the hand and with 7680 already in the pot, I feel like if I shoved here I was only going to get called by hands that had me in trouble. I decided to check the river.

Is there any value in betting here on the river? Is there really anything I could have done differently in this pot? Or is 7680 on this hand a pretty good pickup at this point in the tournament?

You never told us what you had. I probably shove granted starting is prob 10k ? You're already deep into it, since its a turbo tourney you'reggonna have to shove soon anyway. So did he have tens or jacks ? Remember this is all without knowing your starting hand, but I think he had tens or jacks. If he had a big ace he's not checking the river, he's either on a mid pocket pair or blown draw.

not sure what you had, but if you're worried he has an A after his flop call and you can't beat an A, why are you betting the turn? If you think he might have a flush draw (not likely given your description, but maybe), then he's way behind on the turn. There's no need to protect your hand, IMO, since at best he's something like a 3-1 dog going to the river (let's say he has an over card and a flush draw). Now, once you made your turn bet, what is the purpose of shoving unless you think you have him beat? If he was on the draw, he missed and will not call, and if he wasn't then you are just likely throwing chips away.

I had AJ in the hand ... after the hand played out he showed an Ace. I dont know what his kicker was but obviously it wasn't AQ otherwise he would've won the pot. I guess I'd have to put him on maybe an A-10 suited, something in that mid-ace range.

I agree with your take aka, betting the river really wouldn't get me anything other than called by a worse hand in my opinion. Just wanted to get what others thought on the hand.

ok, now that I know what you had... I think you definitely got max value out of the hand. In fact, your opponent is probably not as big a rock as you thought, having called you twice with worse than AJ. He obviously didn't have a flush draw to go with his relatively weak ace. My personal preference would have been to pot control a little more by checking the turn, or perhaps checking the flop/betting the turn. But, you certainly would have won fewer chips taking that line. Also, this was a turbo and you had a fairly short stack. I don't play in those sorts of situations very often so my instincts may not be best applied to hands like these.

Wow ace jack ? I'm def betting the river. Turbo tourney, get all you can while you can. If this was a cash game I can see the check on the river but in a turbo style tournament I like a bet here. If he called two previous bets I think you can get a little more on the river, him limping doesn't say AQ or AK at all, even for a tight player. Instantly I think he doesn't know how to play a mid pair or in this case likely A-10. Idk even ABC players maybe especially ABC players are going to open with a big ace. That is textbook isn't it ? Maybe he puts you on JJ QQ or TT. If he called you down that far I don't see him getting away from the hand unless he missed the draw. Maybe if you were evenly stacked but not in the current scenario.
