I need to be better at doing those kind of things. I'm a little worried I've hit "peter principle" limit and it's all going to come crashing down here any second.

For you, I think it's more impostor syndrome than peter principle.

If heís got to work with this guy going forward, this incident is a valid reason to avoid him. The guy has terrible judgment.

I only said that because I know I'm doing that. I'm just talking myself into that excuse. The reality is that this particular dude won't even end up the cheapest, and so it's a moot point.

I don't even know what my dream job would be. I just know I want to make more money and then go from there.

My cousin is a personal CPA for an old rich woman and her foundation. He gets endless private jet flights and basically is just her personal money guy. I feel like that would be my dream job for you.

So I just GIF responded before because I didn't have much time, but Swingers is absolutely a classic film. It's in the pantheon of break-up films. From a plot standpoint, I get that it seems like not much is happening. It's more of a character study and a satire. I also think it's immensely quotable and probably have most of the movie memorized. I'm guessing I've seen it at least 10 times.

I first rented and watched it soon after it was available at Blockbuster. It had the lasting effect of getting me into swing and neo-swing. I loved the music, and I enjoyed taking a dance class. I also wore a blue zoot suit with a fedora and wingtip shoes to my prom. Getting beyond the exposure to new cultural elements to the actual film...

I generally agree with loogie's assessment and would probably cite those two things first, but let's go in-depth on a lot of it.

Spoilering for length and plot (I guess)...

In summation, SA, you're wrong.

I'm with SA on this one. I thought Swingers sucked. I didn't see it until like 2012 though, so it's time had certainly passed.

i don't know about all that, but the movie just sucked. wasn't funny, wasn't dramatic, wasn't smart or interesting or insightful or anything. it was just some losers being losers and sucking at life.

It dealt with everything you know nothing about

Friends and friendship
Going out to bars and parties and having fun with friends
Trying and succeeding in getting girls

I can see why you didnít like it.

Yeah, I hate to shit on a fun theory, but it would be unprecedented for a Christian to go to the lengths of lying to a woman and ruining her life just to lend credibility to an on-going deception. I’m calling this one debunked.

I'm not saying that I agree with BigD, but I may or may not have a kid named after the girl in Mi2.

no, i'm really not.

Re: Loogie, I think the fact that it resonates with you and Cobson speaks at least partially to Strat's point about it being micro-targeted to a specific subculture of aspiring Hollywood entertainer. With that in mind, the movie makes a lot more sense to me as something they made for their friends. I can even appreciate the larger appeal of that kind of voyeurism to some percentage of a more general, outsider population, but it just doesn't work for me on that level either.

Re: McGee's point about intent, I think Top Gun is a closer comparison than Fight Club. Fight Club doesn't really work for me either in adulthood, and I kind of cringe looking back on how much I liked Chuck Palahniuk as a kid. But even still, Fight Club is made by people with a significant track record of making content that at least attempts (and to many people wildly succeeds in achieving) some kind of deeper meaning or higher artistic value.

I agree that Swingers seems to portray its lifestyle as pathetic, just like I agree that Top Gun portrays the Navy as a homosexual burlesque show. It's a fun theory to think about, it can certainly appear that way on screen, and the case is really compelling, but at the end of the day it's kind of a stretch in my opinion to say that one time in the 90s Doug Liman did one half-clever thing, but denies it and just prefers to work on projects like Suits instead.

I think you're misunderstanding me too. If anything, I think you should have gone harder at him. When a zombie like SA opens himself up for slam dunks about his empty life with a comment like "I must have been busy that day," I expect something more cutting from a trained comedian. My point was that your joke was based on the premise that SA's time was limited or useful, when his entire persona in addition to the the comment you were responding to imply that his time is not valuable to him.
