serious question

Hi, my name is Bob and I am a donk."Hi, Bob."Hi.Or at least, I can be a donk. When I am concentrating while playing poker I make fat cash. Good reads, good decisions, blah, blah, blah. I make a living at cards and I depend on it.However, I'm sure at least some of you are familiar with this problem that I have more frequently than I can afford. Essentially, at certain points I just turn my brain off. I start calling all-ins on draws. I bluff waaaaay too much. I push in with 24 hearts because it is the "magic" hand. I think to myself "Well, I'm probably winning right now..... Call" or "Damn, I lost three $1k sit 'n go's in a row, now all I have to do is win a $5k one and I'll be back up ! ........" nope. These episodes are generally brought on by a horrific series of bad beats or they happen while I am playing when I shouldn't be, i.e. while tired or drunk or high or angry. My question in asking this is, how can I avoid them? The best way I can decribe the episodes, as I already have, is that my brain is turned off. I have no self-control during these periods. By definition how can I end them if I can't even realize that I am having one? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.P.S. these never seem to happen in live play, only online. I suspect it is because the losses don't feel "real" if hard cash isn't actually coming out of my pocket.

Well, my first instinct would be to tell you to stop playing online. My second thing to say, is you MUST learn to control yourself, to exercise disapline when you feel yourself going on tilt. Get up, go to the bath room, splash water on your face. But by your own definition, you can't control yourself during these sessions, so if I were you, I'd take a break from online for a while, and get philosophical, 'cause your prolems apparently aren't poker ones.. your poker is fine, it's your mental state that's off, and it's your mental state you need to address.

You would think that one could maintan some sense of responsibility and interest when playing $1K SnGs, but I guess not. What limits do you really play? Simple answer, don't play SnG's online. Stick to cash games.

Original. How do I avoid tilt? Never thought of the concept, I thought tilting was a normal natural part of the game. Execrcise self-control? Why? Deny reality, really? Is there anywhere you can find any books on this subject or read about it online anywhere? I know, maybe they should start a friggin tv show called, "tilt".

Quit Drinking & Smoking while you are playing online. You write that poker is your means of income. If you worked in a Lawyers office or as an Accountant would you drink or burn one in your place of work? Plan on doing this on Monday or Wednesday nights when the online action might be slower than say a Friday or Saturday Night when the most fish are online. Good Luck!! If you are good enough to play in 1,000 SNG's I think you can figure out how to fix your problem.

No its not even tilt. Well in a way it is, but tilt by my definition is when you know you're playing badly but just don't care. I "know" I'm playing badly in these situations but it is only really in the subconscious and I don't realize it until aftrer its too late. Its like when you are drunk, you know you're drunk, but sometimes when you wake up the morning and think "holy shit I can't believe how drunk I was last night."
