High Stakes Poker - Real Or No Real?

Recommended Posts

Okay - here's the thing.. This whole game just smells fishy to me. Poker is hot - everyone is selling something on the side, whether it be books, dvd's camps, etc. Many of the "pros" are not making the tv time they used to make. Then this comes out. I'm not saying its all fake, but here's a couple of observations - take em for what they're worth:1) Apparently this game is happening in a suite at the golden nugget - privately. Well, if you've been paying attention to the news in vegas over the past few years, the large casinos have been wanting to build separate salons for their high rollers for a while and now have some special places, but they are still right on the casino floor - this is done for both the player and the casino safety. So this game is allowed to be played in a suite? Off the floor? Okay, so you say, "well, they got permission because they are filming a tv show." Well, I don't totally buy that because then the next time a whale comes in or someone famous, they could just say, "hey, we'll let you play blackjack in your suite away from the public and we'll tell the nevada gaming control we are filming a tv special and really just burn the film." I don't think thats feasible.2) Watch tonights episode closely when phil gets up after being hit with the quads. Notice anything odd about the ceiling of this "suite?" The walls end and then you can see black and what looks like a set. It sure looked like a set to me from that scene (there was one other one where you could see the door to the room and then right above it there was no wall it just looked like it went up (like it was in a sound stage).3) Why aren't they showing hands that are being thrown away pre-flop? This has nothing to do with why it might be fake, but just something that I don't like about the show. It doesn't teach me anything to watch a guy fold - unless I know what he had in that position.Flame away kiddies. Its what you do best.

1) Even if it happened on the casino floor, they still need to set it up like a tv studio - sound quality, lighting etc. It would look pretty tacky if in the background you can see cameras, some drunk guy getting in a fight and the waitress spilling a drink.2) See point 13) I doubt most of the pros would want that information given away. My guess is that it was part of their agreement.

too much to quote...but i disagree... why would people like the doctor, or jerry buss, or the guy that built the stratosphere, i cant remember his name be playing so tight, and if it was just all bout tv time... you think helmuth doesnt get enough tv time and if he wanted more he would have played all the days and not just the last one....i think they wanted to film a high stakes game and make money off of it so they invited a bunch of players to use their own money in a game, dn has already confirmed it many times they were using their own money... they only got paid a stipend or somethingand it was organized so whats wrong with that. that doesnt show anything to or promote anything being fake.

and to the third question, i dont really know the answer but they do show several hands where someone like dn or farha raises and than everyone folds, so its not like they only show big hands(espn, wpt), but they are showing a lot of small pots and raise and fold hands.

Actually, in both WSOP and WPT you see cameras and crew people walking around constantly. To me it doesn't detract from the game at all. It shouldn't be "perfect." We are supposed to be like a fly on the wall watching this high stakes game - but it just doesn't feel that way.

I'm not sure what you mean by "no real" (sic)? Do you just mean that it is not filmed in a suite? Yawn. Do you mean it is not at the Golden Nugget? Yawn.Or do you mean it's rigged? Or the player's are not playing with their own money? Or what?Your observations only apply to the first two possibilities, which isn't that much of a conspiracy if you ask me, which you didn't.I would like to use this appropriate opportunity to try out QP/DD (Quit Poker/ Do Drugs). Hope this helps!

Do you honestly think they could get all those big names to compromise their integrity? One or two maybe but it would be a tough job to get them all to blatantly lie to the public. And to keep it a secret for this long.

Everything about the poker is 100% real. That much, I can absolutely guarantee you. As for the location, the event happened at the Golden Nugget in the same place that they also filmed the SupoerStars of Poker III and the NBC Heads up Season 1. They built a set that looks like a suite.

The one thing I wonder about that game was if anyone ever took Sammy Farah up on his offers to split the pot or take the profit or whatever. He seemed to do it a lot but they never showed anyone agreeing to it. Of course they probably wouldn't show that on TV, it'd be real anti-climatic.

I heard Jimmy Hoffa is buried on that sound stage along with the Holy Grail. Indiana Jones told me... Dr. Jones also writes about it in his blog.
can I get a link please... :club::D:D

Yea, i agree, Antonio went up a few notches, even with the R+R thing. But he stepped out of his comfort zone to play, and there is something to be said for that. Definitely the most respectable player on that show OUTSIDE of the regular big game players

lol. jesus, this is the same reason Dave Chappelle has abit about idiots who would call phone numbers from movies and thats why they had to change it to 555-XXXX.Of course its a set made to look like a suit, if it was done in a real suit the quality would be ***, and instead of this thread, you woulda started one that said "You know, for the big game, they sure went cheap on production costs blah blah i'm ghey"
