Update On Bill Banning Online Poker

Recommended Posts

A U.S. House committee on Wednesday approved a bill aimed at stamping out the $12 billion Internet gambling industry by stopping businesses from accepting credit cards and other forms of payment. This will essentially make it impossible for US players to play poker online. A tentive date for the vote will be late next week. It will become illegal for Neteller, Firepay, Epassporte, etc. to allow a US player to deposit onto the poker sites, gambling sites, sports betting sites, etc. Most of the major sports (NFL, NBA) have written memorandums supporting the bill. It will be the responisbility of the company to ensure that the person is not a US citizen. This is dooms day unless the poker sites step up.

What?? Where did u see this? What if the bill passes...when will it go into effect? What about U.S. players that currently are playing at online poker sites and have money in their accts? How would players withdraw money? There's gotta be some advance notice...Also, poker pros like DN say that the bill will never pass and online poker will not be banned in the U.S. Hope DN is right! Also, guys and gals sign up for the Pokerplayersalliance. go to pokerplayersalliance dot com and register. It only costs $25 I think and party poker will reimburse u this money if u sign up. I am not endorsing any sites...just think online poker should not be banned.

This is the letter I got back...Dear Mr. xxx:Thank you for writing to me about gambling on the Internet. I agree withyou.I am not a proponent of gambling, but I do not believe the federalgovernment should tell people what they can or cannot do on-line. You cancount on me to vote against any attempt by the Republican majority to limityour rights on-line.Thanks again for contacting me.Sincerely,Pete StarkMember of CongressFHS/tegConfirmation # 275188I cannot guarantee the integrity of this message. So neteller, Firepay, etc. are just going to say "Well, geez, ok." I'm just failing to see how the U.S. government can tell an offshore bank that they can't accept people's money, or let them send it where they want. I know you're trying to tax 12 billion(of how much of that is US funds?), but are the bookies and underground cardrooms going to start paying taxes all of a sudden? More money for law enforcement, bleah..bleah... This tilts me just thinking about it. Any endorsement by major sports is a joke, pure lip service. I guess if you make unenforceable legislation, you have an excuse when you can't enforce it. "Well, we tell people it's illegal. These people are breaking the law. They should stop." This should be a bigger joke than the war on drugs. If you smoke too much, drink too much, gamble too much, snort too much, or **** too(many people) much, chances are you're going to shorten your lifespan. Isn't that enough? Let natural selection take it's damn course, and leave me with a smile on my 29(and counting) year old corpse. A link to the above would be appreciated. I know you're yelling fire, but I want to see some smoke before I leave the theater. On a lighter note, I laughed quite hard at this quote "This is dooms day unless the poker sites step up." Armageddon!!!!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060315/wr_nm/...l_gambling_dc_2Major professional sports organizations supported the legislation, including the National Football League and Major League Baseball, saying in a joint statement that sports betting "threatens the integrity of our respective sports."But Massachusetts Democratic Rep. Barney Frank (news, bio, voting record), the top Democrat on the House committee, opposed the bill. He said Congress should not seek to control how adults spend their money just because some lawmakers oppose gambling."Adults are entitled to do with their money what they want to do," he said.A group called the Poker Players Alliance opposed the legislation as well."It is disingenuous to oppose Internet gambling and then write a bill that makes select forms of online gambling legal," said Michael Bolcerek, president of the group.

This is in fact a consequence of the WTO litigation between the United States and Antigua, in which the US tried to restrict cross-border gaming. Through it is a complicated ruling, in part the decision made it clear that if the US wants to ban offshore internet gaming for its residents, it will need to ban domestic internet gaming as well. That was my take on the case, so this attempt at legislation is not surprising. As for some previous comments, this would actually be much easier to enforce than illegal narcotics or illegal cardrooms. Denying access to servers and sites is relatively easy. Go ask a resident of China, where the internet is heavily censored.

If this bill is going to pass, which I really hope not, and they are actually going to deny acces from servers, it seesms to me you could bring it to tril, and say it's against civil rights. If somebody knows more about this please tell.....How could the NFL and MLB be for it?? Lots of people add exitement to the games by betting on it, and because of that they watch it. Now I can watch just for the games themselves, but what the heck is wong by placing a bet on them???All in all, I believe there are too many forces against it, and it's uncontrollable, starting with the banks, like Neteller, politicians who are against, ending with the poker sites and players.

In China, internet access is heavily censored. This is definitely true. If people don't believe this, ask anyone who lives in China and uses the internet. There are many filters in place preventing users to access sites that the gov't does not want them to access. If people enjoy playing poker online, do something...I have. Don't let a few politicians pass a bill that will restrict people from playing poker. That is ridiculous.

! Nooooooooooooot truuuuuueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!I liked this part: " am not a proponent of gambling, but I do not believe the federalgovernment should tell people what they can or cannot do on-line"Does that include kiddie pr0n? A bit of a sweeping statement, to say the least. And, God knows, members of Congress are ever prone to telling the absolute truth when asked a straight question.

If the law is as successful as the CAN SPAM law you can expect to see hundreds of new online gambling sites.Seriously though in some ways I hope they succeed in making it illegal. It's clearly a case of a vocal minority lording it over the vast majority who enjoy online gambling and can do so responsibly. If the religious right succeeds in banning online gambling entirely maybe the majority of us that like it and think we should be allowed to do it will finally step up and get the law overturned and made truly and clearly legal. I for one would prefer if online poker sites could be US run, regulated and taxed. I'm sure the republicans would just spend the revenue on some war in some other country that's no threat to us but at least we could be moderately more secure that what we're doing is legal and regulated to be somewhat fair.

so US residents are in the clear?Of course not. If you are on US soil you are subject to its' laws - whether you are a citizen, resident or merely a visitor.Remember that US kid who got lashed with a bamboo pole in Singapore for writing graffitti?

I just got this email...Dear Mr. ShakeZuma:Thank you for writing to me about gambling on the Internet. I agree withyou.I absolutely hate it as well. I will do everything in my power to make sure that it becomes illegal and that all offenders will be punished to the fullest extent. Preferably death. Please continue to write your congressmen on issues such as this. Remember, I can't submit the bills, only pass them! Thanks again for contacting me.Sincerely,George W. BushPresidentUSA P.S. Does that include kiddie pr0n? Obviously he misspoke, as he did not mean things that are illegal in whatever way and in whatevever place they occur. Child porn is illegal in the real and virtual world across the board; poker is legal (at least in some forms and some jurisdictions) in the real world.
