Ok, As some of you may know I am in an monster slump. Down like 700 or 800 dollars this month. (200 tonight) I generally play .50 1.00 NL. My bankroll is still in good shape around 3k. But I am bored, and am not having fun.The odd thing is i am happy with my play. I have been losing huge pots with huge hands Quads lose to better quads lots of boat over boat set over set, and suckouts. MY AQ with Q on the board hits 9 on river ect.I have tried playing other games Omaha has been fun, but it will be a while before i am proficient. I am starting to read up on limit i am guessing the swings are less.I am thinking of blowing off the cash games and just playing tournaments or something. What do you guys do. When the bad beats have you bored rather than frustrated?

aslong as you get your money in good and are maintaining sanity you can keep playing. If your play starts to waiver because you not into it its time for a break until you get your "hunger" back.

I am getting in good for the most part. Except in a couple of boat over boat situations, but how do you lay down a boat?I also had a few set over set where i was behind, but how do you lay that down?Other than that getting it in ahead and certainly not tilting in any way, just staying the course. But not as fun as when i was slowly building.

take a week off. seriously it will do wonders. if you have gotten into any bad habits that you are not aware of then they will dissapear. plus you will be craving poker so when you come back it will be exciting again.

when i start running bad, i usually jump down to the low limits (like .02/.04) and just goof off....talk to the friendly players down there...just something where you can relax and enjoy the other aspects of poker. same with something like the $1 SNG's or MTT's....

first, know that i went on a 12k (350BB at various levels of limit) downswing earlier this year. that should make you feel better, at least for starters. also know that i've started to turn it around recently, because that's what winning players do if they don't allow themselves to get overly psyched out by bad runs.specifically, though, when i'm getting crushed and i can't figure out whether i'm making mistakes or not, i make myself take a break. not for a night, not for two days, but for at least two weeks. i've had to do this twice in the last year, and i'm better off for it. and not just because i start winning again afterwards.if you're anything like me, when you get bowled over at the tables through no fault of your own, it can start affecting the other parts of your life, and you should do your best to make sure that you get those other things back in order before even thinking about cards again. take a girlfriend out of town for the weekend, buy the wife a weekend getaway, go drive to a friend's who lives out of town, whatever applies. just get your mind off the game for a while, and don't feel like you have to come back until you really want to.and when you do come back, try a new game. for me, it was PLO the first time around, then stud with some triple draw thrown in, etc. that should make you really feel fresh and really want to LEARN at poker again. i think that all too often, good players think they've got it and are too apt to declare bad runs as solely the fault of variance, etc., when they may well be making some small errors here and there. you can always get better, and one of the best ways to remind yourself of that is to start fresh at a game that you're not an "expert" at. when you do decide to return to NLHE (or whatever game you specialize in), you'll be better off for it, really. you won't feel like you've been doing nothing but that game for a long time, and you'll be forced to think more about decisions that may have been costing you a bet or three here and there. and that's a good thing.but yeah, the most important thing is to take a break and make sure the rest of your life is in order. and take a long break, longer than you think is necessary at least.

wow checky, great tips.dude OP, limit has even bigger swings, you're probably playing okay, but take a break, get in the right headspace, and get back to cashing in on your big hands. you know how to beat them, you've done it before, you'll do it again. if you've done an honest assessment of your game and your play, you'll win the hands that you're supposed to again. it will all balance out.

Yeah, dude, don't switch to limit to avoid big swings, and especially don't switch to limit if you're prone to tilting or steaming.

Thanks for the responses.Another break it is. I took one a couple weeks ago, and i have 5 day trip to London this week which will provide some time off. Then I will regroup and start over.

Glad to see that you've found something that works for you. But if you lose your way again, PLO's tons of fun. Honestly, sitting down to the computer to play hold 'em sounds like drudgery for the most part right now, but I can't get enough PLO. I was afraid I was a losing player on the Party 1/2 game, but I've adjusted to the tighter players (compared to Bodog), and I'm in the middle of a nice little $1400 upswing this session. I completely broke one of the tables I was playing, so I'm down to one now, and I'm probably going to call it a night pretty soon.

Wow that is cool. I can't wait to get back to winning. I am working on PLO and have had some success playing. You responded to my post in the omaha section. I still have a lot of work to do in that game.I guess i have to remind myself that I am still way ahead of the game. I am still ahead over 4000.00 for the year, (was up almost 5000.00) have bought some fun stuff with my winnings, and had some fun along the way. But I think I am done with poker until i get back from My trip. Thanks again for all the ideas and support.

You know what Phil Ivey says about this..."Theres no such thing as runnin bad....just playin bad..."Thats coming from Phil Ivey... Best advice is to take some time off and relax and recoupe... If you were in the 5% of winning players, getting back there will be no problem...

Recomended reading? Was going to pick up SSHE for my flight. How about for omaha?
Honestly, the articles linked here helped me a lot more than the PLO section in SS2. I don't know much in terms of a full book, but these articles definitely get you thinking about the game in the right way.

Do not pick up a copy of Championship Omaha by T.J. Cloutier...it blows chunks. There is a small amount of good stuff mixed up in a load of "countryfied" writing that's a jumbled up.I am very disappointed in it.
