Going To Melbourne On Thursday...

Recommended Posts

I'm going down to Melbourne on Thursday and plan on playing in a casino for the first time in my life. I'm going with my non-poker playing brother for a wedding, so I can't spend too much time in the casino as he would get very bored. But anyway, since I've never played in a casino I've got a few questions I think I should probably know...1. Is it customary in Australia to tip the dealer? I know it's illegal in the UK and expected in the US... So what is it here?2. If so, how much per pot I win is standard?3. I'm going to be playing the lowest limit available ($1/$2 NL I think it is... the limit tables were too expensive). What kind of rake/playing fee can I expect?4. Anything else I should know? I don't want to walk in and be one of those annoying people who don't have a clue what they're doing... Plus I think this would make me a big target for anyone there who's any good.I'm gonna try not to play scared at all and just go for it... I've just turned 19 but look 16, so a lot of players will try and intimidate me I think. Especially if I go in not knowing what I'm supposed to be doing...

I found this from 2006:

Australian casinos are similar to British casinos, though the dress code tends to be more relaxed at these casinos. Like British casinos, tipping is forbidden and no entry fee is required. Since Joe Hachem's WSOP victory, poker is more popular in Australia and more games will likely be available.A different form of rake is also sometimes taken in Australian casinos. For example, at the Star City Casino in Sydney, each player pays a certain amount of rake per hand. At the pot-limit/no-limit games, a rake of $1 AUD is taken per hand (about $.70 USD). This amounts to an extremely large rake, since up to $7 USD is taken per hand…even if a player just steals the blinds! If the rake is this high, it is difficult, if not impossible to win at the game in the long run.

http://www.pokertips.org/weekly.shuffle/archives/2006-06-04I would ask these questions of a floorperson upon arrival. They're there to help.

Tipping is not allowed. Not sure what the rake is at Crown, haven't been down there for a while but if it's anything like star city it will be high. Royal Tour has been playing down there a lot recently and should be able to help you with that. Talk about not being able to beat the game due to the rake is silly imho, the plethora of utterly crap players will make the game beatable.Just make sure you act in turn, take notice of what"s going on around you and don't drink too much and you should be fine. I'd also avoid trying to make any super plays at these levels at least until you have a read that someone is super nitty. Occasionaly you will find the odd self proclaimed pro that will take pride in laying down his 2 pair just so he can show you how big a laydown he can make but in general the people you are playing will be stations. Just play tight aggressive and have fun.Good Luck

yeah I haven't played at Crown - play at Star City a bit. The rake is ridiculous but the game is still extremely beatable. The standard is absolutely awful.I doubt anyone will be trying to intimidate you at 1/2 - it is a pretty jokey game in Sydney anyway (although I have heard that the play at Crown is a fair bit better). If it's anything like Sydney, your best strategy is to overbet made hands on drawy boards. I was in a hand with a gambly Asian guy at Star City. I had KK. Board on the turn was KdQd3c4s - there was $400 in the pot. Asian guy had pretty much announced to the table that he had a flush draw. I shoved the turn for $990. He snaaaaaaaaaaaaap called with 6d7d. MIssed the river then explained to me that he called because he also had the gutshot. I agreed that it was in fact a superb call.

Loxo do you play a lot at Star CIty. Is so which game?
Haven't played there this year. Had a son just over 7 months ago so in the lead up to that and since he was born have been home a whole lot more. Played the 5-5 NL a fair bit before that and also some Omaha. Will get back into it after xmas. It really is, or at least was a really juicy game. The room itself (or should I say cordoned off section) sucked though, has it improved?

I know it's illegal in the UK and expected in the US... So what is it here? No. I remember that some guy at my table was making such a big deal about trying to tip the dealer even though the dealer explained to him that he will lose his job if he accepted. 2. If so, how much per pot I win is standard?3. I'm going to be playing the lowest limit available ($1/$2 NL I think it is... the limit tables were too expensive). What kind of rake/playing fee can I expect? You can expect to pay though the ears. The game is very beatable though so I wouldnt worrie too much. Generally if it is a table full of asians then it is a loose table.4. Anything else I should know? I don't want to walk in and be one of those annoying people who don't have a clue what they're doing... Plus I think this would make me a big target for anyone there who's any good. You will do something stupid , everyone does first time. However there will be someone at the table (if at night) that is stupid drunk that will make whatever mistake you make pale in comparison. If you are really self conscious about it watch the table for a round to get a general idea of what you should be doing. Best tip, Dont touch the pot until the dealer starts to push it towards you!I'm gonna try not to play scared at all and just go for it... I've just turned 19 but look 16, so a lot of players will try and intimidate me I think. Especially if I go in not knowing what I'm supposed to be doing... The people who will try to intimidate you will generally not be the best poker players so dont worrie. Just dont go down there looking like phil laak or phil hellmuth and have fun.

This is also very good advice.

Sweet. Thanks for the answers and tips. Should have some fun. I don't expect to come out winning hundreds or anything, it's more just I don't want to lose too much. And that tip about not raking the pot until the dealer starts pushing it... Cheers for that. That's probably one of the mistakes I would definitely make... I'm pretty absent minded a lot of the time lol.

Yeah mate it still sux. They have added more tables though. Now they have $1-$2 max buy in $80, the old 5-5 game, a 5-5 game with a $200-$500 buyin and a $1K max buyin - think it's $10-$20.I don't play there too often as I prefer tourneys and therefore online. But yeah it is incredibly soft.

Have you played the Wed night tourny there at all? I was reading the terms and conditions the other day and apparently the blinds are moved at the tourny directors discretion? Pretty crappy. Are they spreading any mixed games at all. I know for a while they would spread Pot limit HE and Omaha ect. Is that still going on?

Do you mean the $100 Thursday night tourney? If so dont waste your time unless you like playing in Turbos. The Structure is disgusting, last time i went deep in it the average stack was less than 10 x BB with 2 tables left, i vowed never to play in it again. As for the 1/2NL games, they are very soft especially on a friday or saturday night.Although if you dont like geting sucked out on often try the 2/3 game as there are less calling stations there.GLGLGLGLGLGLGL
