Let's Say That I'm A Decent Amateur Player...

Recommended Posts

Whether or not I am is irrelevant...for the sake of this question lets take it at face value that I am. I'm going to play in a NLHE tournament at a casino in Vegas. What are some of the moves that I will be facing from some of the better players? My meaning is what can I expect different than playing at my local casino? How do the local pros handle and manipulate the decent amateurs? What reads or tells do good players have generally against decent players (not bad players, but decent)?p.s. More info: A $105 buy-in NLHE tourney with no rebuys or add-ons

If you're playing anything less than $5-10 or 10-20nl, you don't much need to worry about it. The "moves" and players will be much the same as the ones at any b&m.edit--sorry - didn't see that you said tournament. Give us some more details - what kind of tourney? WSOP?

I have really small experience, just played some $375 sat and some $225 sats at teh WSOP and one low stake buy in NLHE event last year. Very nervous at first, then got my game on and to be honest, it really is a shame what level some of these guys are playing. In about 20 minutes I felt very confident and honestly feel that a decent player has a better than decent chance against most of the players you will face. Also, flash a valet ticket every now and then to get a little respect!

a 105 NL tourney in vegas I would'nt exactly expect to be up against Phil Ivey solid poker will probably get it done, just recognize who has no clue what they are doing and who has a clue and play pots against the guys who have no clue because they will be definetely be there.

For a $105 tourney, you can expect a crapshoot. Players with little to no clue, playing mostly any two cards they can find. The reason you probably won't do well though, is that the blind structures are usually crap. You'll start with something like 1000 chips, blinds of 25-50 and that will go up every 15 minutes. There's no time to "be patient" in most of these that I've played in. I hate crappy tournament structures.

you can tell who the pros are for the most part.... just by the table mannerisms.. very confident at the tables.. as for a 100 dollar tourney. If you play solid poker and don't deviate from that you'll do just fine.

Read Vol 2 of Harrington before you go. If you don't see the moves, you might be able to use them.
But he'll have to be careful because most of the players will be terrible, i.e. not able to be bluffed. They won't recognize a move for what it's supposed to represent.

Yeah, pretty much anything around $100 or less is going to have a crappy structure, the casinos just want to get the tournament over with so they can spread cash games on the tables again. It's an all-in fest after the 1st hour, no way to play a tournament.OP, spend the extra $500 ($550 + 40) and enter the 12pm Saturday tournament at Venetian. 10,000 starting chips, 40 minute levels. I can't wait for September, my fiance and I have an entire Saturday blocked out of our honeymoon to play this tournament.

If things don't work out, you mind giving me her number?

Play very tight at the beginning unless you spot fish that you can outplay post flop, in contradistinction to getting into too large a pot preflop.Luske advises AA-JJ for the first half of the tournament only. After all, you are on vacation and it's Vegas, enjoy assessing the players for experience while playing close enough to optimally anyhow. If for no other reason, your prolonged survival means more entertainment for you. Try and figure out who the locals are and whether or not they're pulling moves. My default position is tight locals make for better players. See who tends to bet flops heads up and who checkraises, etc.Note that the first sentence above indicates you don't take tightness too far, like Ivey said, you don't need a plan, just adjust to the table you are at and relax.

She's honestly the only person I know (that I didn't meet on FCP, anyway) who's as insane about poker as I am.How many wives do you know of that are comfortable with the fact that she'll be playing poker in a totally different casino than her husband during their honeymoon? (she likes the Mirage room, I like Bellagio, we both like MGM)We're planning the mushy couple stuff too (helicopter trips, sex, dinners, sex, shows, sex), but she's almost more excited about 8 days of poker and gambling than I am.I'll be sure to PWIGD though. <grin>
