I Called In Sick Today

That feels like a sweeping generalization with no actual experience or data behind it.

and after 3 days, he is risen!

If you are paying $20 for a haircut, I imagine people assume you did it yourself anyway.

Pocket change cost me my first and only black girlfriend.   It was in the middle of a roaring poker boom and I was flush in ways most men don't even bother dreaming of. Money, it was like dirt to me

Make your own hot sauce

I highly endorse this.

I love spicy foods, but I'm not into insanely hot hybrid peppers or anything. Thai Chilis, habaneros, and whatnot go in a lot of stuff I make, but I would never get enjoyment out of just eating them raw, and certainly not scorpion peppers or ghost peppers or anything like that.

I don't mind some of those crazy peppers in their own contexts, but I hate the genre and the pretense of white boy heat, where you just flavorlessly pursue prank-grade spiciness. The habanero is the standard by which I judge chilies.

The recruiter I used to get this current job called me up yesterday. Had a few roles thought I might be interested in. One of them that I said to submit my resume to had said it would involve supervising the junior analysts so, I might have to actual listen to these manager tools podcasts. Or at least say that I do.

Think he heard the news about your firm?

Reminds me of the last few episodes of Mad Men, when a recruiter is meeting with Peggy, goes to apparently great lengths to keep it quiet due to the risk of the firm finding out, and then another recruiter casually references the meeting an episode or two later.

The recruiter has so many good lines, but one stuck with me for some reason. “It’s better if they think you’re unhappy.” I don’t know if he’s right about that at the extremes, but it makes some sense. Not that I think my boss really gives a shit about whether I’m unhappy at this point.

Well, considering my boss and I both called him the day the sale was announced he's probably aware. My boss called him to ask him to inquire about himself but also to ask him to not try and poach me right away (not seriously, I might add, I've been very upfront with him about what I'm thinking in regards to staying/going and he's talking to a friend at TCF next week and asked if he could give him my resume, too).

It seems very uncharacteristic for you to be this calm and reasonable about the situation.

I'm loving this new Napa. He buys a house, grows up, and starts to chill out about unexpected turns in his career. Well done, Naps! (When are we having a work day?)

Well, it helps knowing that I've got a job until the end of April. If it's March and I still don't have a job then it'll be full on DEFCON 1. I also did a lot of cash flow scenarios running up to the purchase of the house in order to know I'd be able to afford it through worst case scenarios.

I'll let you know. One of the bedrooms was violet and I wanted to paint it asap and I did and I chose a color that ended up being a ton more blue than grey and I need to repaint but i want to get stuff put away and really do a deep dive room by room by what I want to change. I did buy the stuff in order to strip my deck but I still need to figure out a color to restain it.

Unbeknownst to you, he’s murdered 7 vagrants this week alone. He’s racking up a lot of billable hours to keep him out of Dutch.

Also, this. I'm going to have take out a second mortgage to pay these legal bills.

In flagrant violation of this thread, I have been sick for a few days and didn't call out of work. (I'm feeling better today finally.) I think this week I'm likely to end up with 40 hours of work...which is the first time I remember that being the case in years. (It's not particularly fun being away from my family that much.)

Oh. When I first read that, I just assumed that was low. I also don't remember the last time I only worked 40 hours.

Mr. worker bee here, works 80 hours a week, drinks his 15 alcoholic drinks per sitting.

I was talking ops with counterparts from another firm that’s doing the same transitions mine is, and I said, “you have feature duplication... we are going to do this function on just one system, and it is cuts costs enormously.” The guy in charge of the project basically says, “oh my god” and spends the rest of the chat just working through how he can make that tweak viable.

Shouldn't you find a way to get paid for that before helping him out?

I was just thinking the same thing. We gotta get a consulting gig.

I’m physically at work around 40 hours a week, but the emotional toll is double that, maybe triple. I’m nearly 70 years old emotionally.

Smoke that shit right out of your head, playboy. At the very least stuff it down with brown. I know alcoholism isn't great for your life expectancy, but it doesn't halve it. Plus, it makes you fun at parties.

There are guys who do consulting in this area. I would like to maybe be a consultant someday, but that jump sounds pretty scary right now. I’m happy to help other firms out on stuff like this. It does nobody any good to have these software companies screwing people.

Ha, like I get invited to any parties. I lost interest in alcohol years ago, but I lost interest in everything years ago.

Got dusted at the casino last night. Flopped a set of 9s and he flopped a set of aces, and got it in for 560 on the flop. Shit happens. I’m trying to get a PLO game going because it is so much more fun. See how it goes tonight.
