home game shuffling

Recommended Posts

Well I play in a home game with some people where we all take turns dealing. We do a normal old fashioned shuffle and cut the cards once. Everytime it come to this one guy to shuffle and deal he only shuffles like 2-3 times and cuts. I usually always ask him to shuffle the deck once or twice more and he gets upset about it and then goes on a "is that a enough shuffling for you" binge for the rest of the night. Do you think I out of line or being overly anal about shuffling? What do you all think is the "normal" amount of times you should shuffle.

So you're saying I'm being overly anal about it?
I usually go about 3 times, maybe 4, depends how good I feel I got them shuffled... cause I dont want to waste too much time...But yeah, maybe a bit... but he sounds like he's being even more of a douche about it.

3 to 5 is about right. I use 2 decks at my games, so it gets more than that usaully.

you can solve the problem by using two decks and having a back shuffle system going.e.g. as button is dealing, CO is shuffling. when the hand is over, Button collects the cards and starts shuffling while the CO hands his deck to SB who cuts it and deals. SB is the new button, Button is now the CO, and CO is now Hijack. so now, the new CO (old Button) is shuffling while the new Button (old SB) is dealing, etc.aseem

Yeah, I do this at a different home game but not at this one.

It's funny to see poker players who don't know how to shuffle a deck of cards. I guess some people really never have played in a casino. the standard shuffle is riffle riffle, strip riffle... every home game where i live has a professional dealer. if you play 5-10 and up or even 3-6 you might think about finding someone to deal. the tips are usually worth it for whoever does it.

You'd be surprised what some people don't know how to do these days. I qualified for the WSOP through Empire. Night before the Main Event they had a gathering with Brad Dougherty. People were asking questions about how to hold their cards to the person next to them wouldn't see them. I actually heard someone ask how you know which corners of the cards the numbers will be on each time....

yep, the standard "casino" shuffle is riffle riffle strip riffle cut, or riffle strip riffle riffle cut, depends on what casino you're at.And my homegame has a fulltime dealer that works on tips. Makes a big difference I think

Why on earth would you want the CO to shuffle? He has to act before the small blind and on top of that you have to pass the cards to your left + 1. Shuffle ahead, the SB shuffles and sets the cards to his right, he should be able to shuffle 7 times before tha action gets to him. As soon as the hand is over, the new SB collects the cards the last dealer cuts and you deal away. I know people have preferences, but this topic has been discussed multiple times in our rooms over the past decade or so. Consensus is to shuffle ahead. My $.02

Here's the rules regarding shuffling that I use for the most part:1. In a player-dealt game, the pack must be shuffled and cut before the cards are dealt. The recommended method to protect the integrity of the game is to have three people involved instead of only two. The dealer on the previous hand takes in the discards and squares up the deck prior to the shuffle. The player on the new dealer’s left shuffles the cards and then slides the pack to the new dealer, who gets them cut by the player on his right.(I don't use the player to the left to shuffle, that seems to be going a little to the paranoid side for a friendly low stakes home game)2. The deck must be riffled a minimum of four times. The cut must leave a minimum of four cards in each portion.3. The bottom of the deck should be protected so nobody can see the bottom card. This is done by using a cut-card. A joker can be used as a cut-card.4. Any complaint about the shuffle, cut, or other preparation connected with dealing must be made before the player has looked at his hand or betting action has started.More rules at:http://www.cardplayer.com/rules-of-poker/g...neral-rules.php

Stylin - you aren't being overly anal, but if your friend is being a dick I say just drop it...not worth the bother. If anything you can watch and try to track the cards a bit...As for my home games, we don't take them seriously at all. For us the home games are to get drunk (or high), hang out, drink, and just have a good time. I think getting bogged down in the minutia (is that a word?) completely kills the mood.
