I Called In Sick Today

Recommended Posts

Went over to a friends for a bonfire and some beers Friday night.

Didn’t really do anything Saturday during the day but My roommates (married not hot) sister was in town so we went out for Thai food and then came back and watched coco.

Didn’t do much of anything yesterday, folded some laundry, watched some Supernatural. Started watching it because I saw it had 45 min episodes and like 15 seasons so I figured it couldn’t be that terrible. And it’s mostly OK so far.

If you are paying $20 for a haircut, I imagine people assume you did it yourself anyway.

and after 3 days, he is risen!

Pocket change cost me my first and only black girlfriend.   It was in the middle of a roaring poker boom and I was flush in ways most men don't even bother dreaming of. Money, it was like dirt to me

I love Thai food and bonfires. That sounds great.

Friday we went out with friends (Napa: My master electrician friend was among them and said he would be happy to help).

Saturday helped move a co-worker from 9-1pm, and then went with friends to Edzo's Burger Shop from Diner's, Drive-ins, and Dives. (I had the Up in Smoke Burger and the garlic fries).

After we ate, went to the matinee of Won't You Be My Neighbor? (The new Mr. Rogers documentary) which was in limited release (but showing at a few theaters in the Chicago area).

Sunday went to church and then went to a graduation party in an old money area of Chicago. The student of mine lives with her mom who is a 65-year-old Cuban divorce lawyer. The house was filled with her neighbors (all doctors and lawyers) who were mostly old Jewish women. It was amazing. I so wish I had recorded it. Her 95-year-old neighbor is Donald Sterlings 1st cousin. She was complaining at first about how his racism had ruined the family name, and an hour later she was being super racist toward her Korean neighbors and black people and saying the real issue with Donald was how he was so frugal but gave his stupid girlfriend millions of dollars. (It was pretty incredible. I was laughing almost the entire time, even though she was super serious and not joking about anything). She later thanked my wife and I for talking to her for almost 2 hours and said it was the first time in years that anyone has listened to her talk.

Cuban divorce lawyer bought a ton of spanish/cuban food from local places and kept bringing us more even though we said we were full. (Also incredible)

We got home about 6 and then a missionary couple came over to share their plans for the mission field and ask us to be monthly supporters.

Busy weekend.

Weekdays and weekends are blurring together for me. My wife and kids are done with school for the summer, so almost every day is the same wide open with regard to scheduling.

I've been back on the poker grind the past few weeks, and it has been going quite well. Unfortunate that crypto is kicking me in the teeth at the moment, but c'est la vie.

Aww geez Brvy, well, I certainly won’t turn down his expertise if he shows up to help. I downloaded a bunch of books on wiring houses this weekend to try and figure out as much as I could.

Now I just need the f’n house. And seeing as how I haven’t heard anything this past weekend wasn’t fruitful for them.

Is a big crypto balance just required for online poker these days? I can’t see myself ever keeping significant money exposed like that.

Was talking to someone at work who is starting to house hunt again. He bought his house three years ago, has made probably 30-40% judging by comparables. Nothing about the situation has changed, except his income increased and his wife decided she doesn’t like the neighborhood anymore. He makes it sound like they’re going to stretch to buy in the $300-350k range. I can’t figure out whether I’m living in the real world right now, or what. It’s not like this is even a nice city.

Just depends. If you're playing "regulated" sites, probably not, though it does facilitate more easily moving money around. For me, I have two sites where I deposit/withdraw via crypto, but my actual balances on the sites are accounted for in USD. I have four other smaller sites where my balances are denominated in crypto.

That would be so horrible to see your bankroll dropping every day that you don't play. Hopefully crypto will stop hemorrhaging for you.

Denver is amazing. I had a friend that lived there and I always loved visiting. The mountains would do you good. Skiing is awesome and you can do it alone while you look for a ski bunny to tame.

Don't say never, but if you say so.

You can still go to the ski area and just eat at the lodges. It's beautiful there. I'm going to be at Dillon Reservoir this Sunday night.

I'll be eating a Buffalo Burger at the Dam Brewery at 9000 feet, thinking about you.

I mean, the flipside is decent too. December was a pretty fun month. But yeah, since then has kind of sucked.

Talked to my boss about the raise cycle. Found out that I probably would have been overlooked if I didn’t say anything. My boss basically told me that the higher tier doesn’t exist for me, but then started thinking out loud about shortcomings I would need to address to get to the tier that doesn’t exist yet. It was amazing. If they leave me out of this grant cycle, I am gone after my current project becomes a resume item.

I also found out that managers for a certain subset of employees were able to fight to get a full raise cycle for their group, while the rest of the firm is left to an 18mo wait. If I were in a tight spot financially, I don’t think I would take this situation well.

Do you watch Billions? The second to last episode this season was talking about their compensation cycle. The CIO suggest waiting until after a capital raise to do the comp meetings and the shop manager says there's 3 things you can't not do without dire consequences: get to a doctor when gut shot; know where a toilet is when dining in India; and pay your people.

Even fictional characters understand management better than your "managers." If there is any place in need of some podcasts on feedback, coaching, and annual review processes its sounds like this outfit.

Yeah. A good chunk of management watches Billions. The CEO compares me to Taylor actually, we dress similar, have the same haircut.

The original plan was to do small raises this month, and then again in December, and that would serve as the transition to the new December cycle. The whole issue is ridiculous. It apparently created a ton of animosity in leadership, and I just want to repeat back to everyone: you’re literally trying to merge the two different performance review cycles into one—and somehow failing.

Part of why I think it got to be so contentious is because the non-advisor track employees have always resented the comp differences, and this was their shot to send a message. They want the company to be more like a standard job, where 5% is doing lights out work. My boss has always been in the “pay advisors less” contingent, which is why I got left to this 18mo wait (my theory). Multiple others in the company (HR, accounting) have made comments to me about how great I’m doing for my age, and I have always bit my tongue, but really, we have a committee that makes these decisions. You just process the paperwork. That doesn’t entitle you to judge my paycheck.

Oh, and this is basically the worst time to be ****ing with people. A quick look around shows that everyone in asset management is hiring and has ambitious expansion plans, because the entire industry now has 20%+ more revenue for no additional effort due to the market uptick over the last 18mos. The job market in this industry is extremely tilted toward the applicant right now.
