Playing Poker Vs. Going To College

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I've read a lot of threads on here, but this is my first post. I'm a Jr. in High School right now and all I want to do is play poker. Of course, I love going to party's and hangin with chicks, but poker's my real passion. Now let me describe to you my problem. I'm a very smart kid, I'm in all advanced placement classes and have a GPA of 3.9. I know I could go to an Ivy league college and get a degree, but thats not what I want to do. I have around 25K saved up and what I really want to do with it is play poker in Vegas. My mother and father despise poker with an extreme passion. I'm still a minor and they make stupid rules at my house, like no online poker during the school week even though I win a few hundred a night on Full Tilt. I know however, that if I do succeed in poker, my parents are the kind of people that would support it if I'm making enough money. My question for you is what should I do first go to a good college and get a degree (not focusing on poker much) or take the 25K see how poker goes for me (If I don't like it I can change my mind). All help Appreciated!Note: My parents are big into getting your education and if I wanted they already said they would pay for college.

go to college!!!! at 17 years old you are not ready to TP/MM. It is possible to put in a lot of hours and a lot of hands while still being a full time student.

Go to university and get an education, goddamnit. Then, when you're an "adult", you can do whatever you want, including smoking meth, banging hookers and playing poker, because they all go hand in hand, my friend. And don't forget to rub it in your parents' faces when you go broke.

Thats what all my buddy's are doing. We have a group of like 5-6 of us who've been playin for around 3-4 years seriously. They are all getting their education first, but I don't see what the point is. Well I take that back I know what the point is, but it doesn't matter if Im just gonna play poker anyway. Don't you think If I feel I'm ready now I should see how Vegas is and how I do?

don't go to college for your future go to college for the parties, the woman, the booze. There are things you will miss out on if you don't go to school that you will never be able to get back at a later time.

You can party and play poker in college. Also, I don't think 25k is enough to go pro in Vegas.Seriously, go to college. If it's good enough for Green Plastic, it's good enough for you.

Is the OP Ripptyde's new account? lolAnyways I would just go to college and keep on playing poker online... if you lose your roll you might need something to fall back on. This is my situation lol. A couple hundred a night isn't going to make it in the real world without a job, (and even if you are a winning player I know you don't win every single night like all kids say they do).

Take that 25g’s and go party it up in the dorms at school, get tons of chicks, and get that degree. It’ll be some of the most fun times of your life.

You could always compromise and get an Ivey league education.Yeah, I did it.
Last time I checked, there aren't very many casinos that will let an 18 year old play. So since you are limited to online and home games, why not go to school and take big $$$ from rich college kids and still pay online.

go to school. I personally went to UMD while i played online and now while im looking for a good fulltime job i play poker semi-professionally. You need your college degree. You can allways play poker online while in school and you wont be old enough to play in vegas. Its a no brainer man.

3.9 GPA and you think you are getting into an ivy league? better have some good SATs, ACTs, and extra curriculars. I had a 4.4 and I didnt get into all of them. Either way, you gotta go to school. U can play and go to school. Look at guys rite there on full tilt, like irock, think he is full time at ND, a very difficult program, and he makes the grades and the money.Invest what you have won so far, and you can take a shot for a year, in vegas, after you graduate. I am enrolled in 18 units and I find enough time to make about 3k a week.

OP, you can't play at Vegas until you're 21. So you have an even longer "wait list." Go to school. If you like online poker and are as good as you think you are, you will be crushing the games making thousands every month, easily. If you find that you can make more $$$ playing poker than going to school for 4 years to get that BS or BA, then go for poker, but leave yourself options.Do you feel good enough to go "pro?" What games are you currently playing and how are you doing? This can easily gauge where you are at in your "poker" career.

Let's look at the two options:1) Get the degree, have something to fall back on if the Poker Career doesn't pan out. The degree is something that you won't ever lose. If you hit a bad streak or aren't quite as good as you thought you were, you'd still have the degree to fall back on. College life is a good time to find out who you are and what you want. Party, Drink, Bang tons of chicks....study every now and again and cruise on through the 4-5 years.or 2) Go to Vegas. If you hit a bad streak or aren't quite as good as you thought you were, you'd be broke and not have anything to show for it. 25k isn't a very big nut. After you move, find a place to live and get your feet on the ground, you better hit the poker rooms hard. 25k will be gone before you know it. EASY CHOICE....Go to school first. Take your college friends money for 4-5 years and then turn that nut into a bigger one later.

Here's the thing bro. You're 17.Thats 4 years away from legal gambling age.I'm a college student now, and I can tell you I wouldn't give up the college experience for any amount of money. Its a fking blast.Stick to playing online occasionally, get a priceless Ivy League Education, drink your *** off, get laid, live on your own, and turn pro after college if thats still where your heart is.

What the he11, you got no gamble in you????F - COLLEGE!!Find a local home game and hone your skills today. Don't worry about rent money , you live at home. And when varience takes your $$$, who cares? Steal some crap from your house or raid your Mom's purse when she aint lookin. Then, in a few years, take all you cash and have and move to some shittthole apartment in North Vegas and start grinding. And when the varience kicks your *** there, cares if you lose! it's the life baby!!! You can start Valeting cars or selling your *** on the strip! Then, when you go broke, crawl back home! Get a job at Micky D's or pushing a broom at Home Depot., or maybe even go back to college then!! You'll only be 25 and at a good community college you can get some sort of degree by the time your 35.SO yeah dude, no brainer!!! SCREW SCHOOL!!!! :club:

Someone above posted the correct response already, but I figured I would reiterate it: Go to college AND play poker. I am a senior at Princeton and, despite the vaunted educational rigors here, I still manage to get in a solid 3-5 hours of play a night. Also, the benefits of being a college student far outweigh the time costs of studies cutting into table time. Just find a subject you're interested in (say, finance?) and thank your lucky stars for the free room and board.
