Live Tournament Terms - HELP

Recommended Posts

Ok, well I am heading to Vegas tomorrow and am looking forward to playing in some NL Hold Em' tournies. I looked online and got some schedules for these tournies, but in reading the descriptions I have some questions about what these tournaments really are. I normally play house games, so these Casino games seem to have different rules. Please help me with the terms below so that I know what I am getting myself into. Thanks......Freeze Out - Shootout - Bounties - Satellites -

Well, Freezout is a normal tournament with no re-buys. So last one standing wins. (I think that's it).... Not sure about a shootout... Bounties give extra prizes or money to people who can eliminate certain people in the tournament... and Sattelites will get you into bigger tournaments, so you don't usually win cash for the win. Everyone feel free to add to this, cause i am not sure about all of them.

A shootout is really just a series of single table tournaments.Take, for example, a field of 81 players. In a normal tournament, as soon as 1 player is eliminated (assuming max table size=10), one table will be broken and its members moved to another table, to "balance" out the tables. In a shootout, though, for a 81 person tournament, you will have 9 tables of 9. Each table will play until there is only 1 person left at that table, with no "balancing" from other tables. The 9 table winners will then play another table to determine the final ranks 1-9.You will sometimes see terms like "Double Shootout" or "Triple Shootout." The word before Shootout is how many tables you will need to win to win the whole event. So a double shootout will take 2 tables to win, a triple will take 3 tables to win.

What he described is a DOUBLE shootout.... because you play two "Shootouts" which are the same thing as a freezeout.... the most common double shootouts are satellites for the WSOP main event, and for other big buy-in tournaments....To answer your other "vocabulary words" :D , a freezeout and a shootout are the same thing, tournaments with no rebuys. If a tournament is described as being a bounty tournament, for each player you eliminate, you receive a bounty. At the Orleans here in Vegas, most of their tournaments are bounties- generally $5 for each player you knock out. This is money taken from the prize pool.... I'm not a fan of bounties....And of course a satellite is a tournament where the prize is entry into another tournament. Good luck, have fun.
