Iwu4u 0
I don't know what to do guys. I'm about ready to give up on poker. First let me give you my background. I started out on UB playing triple draw one one penny two penny around 2-3 years ago(my buddy transfered me 3 bucks on UB and I've never deposited since.) I worked my way up through the limits by playing triple draw and hold em sng's. I got up to 5/10 triple draw on a 2k roll and blew it. Then I worked my way back up over this past summer to about 1500. Blew that from a horrible run and playing above my roll at 3 6 triple draw. Then just this past November I won a tournament for a solid $700 at the end of the month. I figured that this was my chance to start playing some NLHE cash seriously(I had done it before just not as my main source of income). After cashing out I had about $900 left I dont need much because I'm a college student. I played some .25 .50 and built that up to about 1500 by christmas. I then moved up to .50 $1 and was 2 and 4 tabling. I ran pretty bad but managed to stick around even between 1400 and 1500. Then I started making money again and made it up to $2100. Then I got back to school and I ran horrible. I'm not lieing almost every single time I got into a 70% 30% situation or better I lost. It was frustrating but I kept playing telling myself that getting in these situations is what makes me money. After losing more money due to horrible beats I had about 900 left. I now decided to play smaller and moved down to .25 .50. I continued to get horribly beat and its really unbeleivable. I kept losing due to horrible 2 outers and sets going down to runner runners. It's hard to believe I've lost to bad beats but in honestly looking at the situation I can say from a totaly nuetral standpoint that I am taking horrible beats. I am a member of card runners and I credit them for a lot of my early success. Bottom line is I emailed poker stars to try and get my HH to import them into poker tracker. Between the time after I won the tournament and the begining of my downswing I had played around 40k hands(I had a lot of time during winter break). Since the begining of my downswing to now I've played about 15k hands. My question is what should I do? I continue to get into situations where im dominating like a set against two pair or set against an over pair and I continue to lose. I have 185 dollars left on stars and I have around the same on UB. I am winning on UB but I almost feel like stars is rigged. I just cant win its so frustrating. I just need some advice. I'm so frustrated and confused because given the equity I've had in each big all in pot that I've lost as a big favorite I should probably have around $3500. I would appreciate any real responses and not any pokerstars is rigged responses. In general I think this is a good forum but sometimes General Forum can drag things offtopic and I really need some advice. Just now I trapped someone with a set of fours against there turned trip kings and the river paired the board $80 pot his way.I have all of my HH in an email that stars sent me but I dont have poker tracker and because I only have like 300 left I cant really afford it. Would anyone be willing to look at my HH and maybe tell me what im doing wrong I guess I have to be doing something wrong but it just doesnt seem like thats possible. Suited_Up 2
I imagine you're probably on a sort of perma-tilt right now.You need a break. Don't even think about poker for awhile, and when you do go back to play, make sure your head is clear, and you aren't worried about the money. As soon as you start pressing you play bad, even though it doesn't seem like you play bad, you are. You start making wrong decisions and pushing hard when you shouldn't, and probably when you know you shouldn't. Also, don't play when you're in any kind of rush. If you're rushing or hoping to make back that money as soon as you can, then you're gonna end up losing it. Trust me, I do it constantly. I know I do it, and I still do it anyway. You have to keep making sure you're in the right mindset to be playing. Maybe this has nothing to do with the problems you're having, but usually when people start running bad, it's real hard to keep your head straight and really turn it around. mclark340 0
Statistical variance is one thing.I have found that when I hit a bad run of cards I find myself in more difficult situations than normal. Why? Because I play too many hands and try to get fancy. Then I get in those showdowns...and it only takes one or two of those to hurt your BR.Take a breather. When you return...play like a rock until you get your rythm back. LuckyMcCatcher 0
Seems like you are flopping well. Need to work on turning and rivering. Essentially, that is the only answer I can give to a question about how to defeat variance and/or randomness.

If you want me to post the emails they are a little entertaining.

Tiltinagain 973
It's more entertaining that you actually emailed.QFT....Did you specifically ask them to turn off the doom switch? That's the code word you know...doom switch.Seriously though. Suited Up gave you great advice and that, along with the aforementioned advice to take some time off to clear your head, is the only way to get off the tilt/pity wagon you are on.Take some time, forget about poker, get laid, then, and only then, come back, play well within/below your bankroll to get your confidence back and work your way back up slowly.GL
TheBigB11 0
Just stick with it. I was down to my last $150 and then ran it up to $2100. $150 wasn't my whole bank roll, but it is what I had left online. I only keep about $1000 on there and cash out anytime I end a session above that. Good look getting it back. Don't try to get it all at once, you just have to grind your way back up. checkymcfold 0
first, do what suited up said. the most important thing is to clear your head and get yourself happy again. playing distressed is one of the worst things you can do. personally, i take a day or two off literally every time i run bad for two days straight. that might seem excessive, but i'd rather always be playing with my head in it than not.second, though triple draw games have dried up a bit, they're still quite beatable. i can't speak for NLHE, which i don't play regularly, but td games on UB and stars are still very, very beatable if you know what's up.the problem is that you were playing severely underrolled. triple draw is SICK variance. SICK. 500BB is an absolute minimum for a roll. 1000 is not absurd.so yeah, take some time off and hit the tables fresh. you'll be fine, man.
NEtwowilldo 0
It sounds like you have good money management, which is a quality that can be hard to find among young players, including myself. It's good that you are moving down in limits when you start to lose, instead of moving up to try and make it back quickly like I do. Maybe you should try playing limit cash games to lessen the variance instead of no limit tournaments if that's what you primarily play. Most pros will tell you that you need the largest bankroll to play no limit tournaments since they have the most variance. Howard Lederer went sixteen years without a cash in the main event, and Erik Seidel also had a bad run after his performance in '88 which was bad for his confidence. The best advice I can give is to read all different kinds of material, with different views on how to play. I've also heard that its good to have a mentor if you are a young player. Try and find someone who plays higher than you and makes a living playing poker. Every time I hit a bad run I just remind myself that I am the greatest player in the world and no one is better than me. May sound arrogant, but it works. No matter what don't lose your self confidence.P.S. Where do you go to school/live? I live in Connecticut, I'm only 19, but I sneak into the poker room at foxwoods pretty easily. Live play is way better
11 to 1 0
Go play tennis. Take up yoga. Shoot some pool. Take a month off, I've read books from pros and they've had way worse runs than this for longer times. Maybe some people here will talk about money management or something but: If you like it, then you don't give up. On anything. Right now you are just waiting for the Great Cosmic Algorhythm to come around and whack ya. Go read Ace On the River - so good. Not a guide, kind of a poker philosophy book. Go find a real casino and play with live people. It's not about you, personally, yanno. So few things in life are.

This is my favorite advice.Seriously tho eveyone has gone through this. If you use proper bankroll management you should avoid going broke during the swing. I have had horrible runs where I seriously can't believe it. But it happens, it can change your game post some hands (not the bad beat ones) but the borderline ones in strategy and get some feedback.
