I'll like to coin a new term. Level is overused in poker. Sometimes level refers to the level of blinds in a tourney. Level could be the size of a cash game. Another time level means playing ability level. Let's use dimensional for playing ability. The beginner would be one dimensional. The weaker players who are easy to read would be two dimensional. The better players in the low levels are three dimensional. The middle level winners are four dimensional and so on.In math a lower dimension is a crosssection of the next higher dimension. Therefore the three dimensional player sees what the two dimensional player is doing. But the two dimensional has no clue what the higher dimensional player is doing. If you're a nth dimensional player, you know what the players in the lower dimensions have for their actions. It's like they're playing with their hole cards face up.As you improve you go up in dimension.

For months I have been unhappy with theoveruse of the term level. Dimensionaldescribes the concept perfectly.Let's put the concept in action. Threeway pot, ply1 is first to act. Rainbowflop, many players would bet top pair orbetter and check/fold all other hands. If ply1 or ply2 bets, you know they havetop pair or better. If you don't havetop pair, you know you are behind. Theirstrategy is one dimension lower than yours. Game theory allows you to opt- imize against their wooden, predictableplay. To force you to call more oftenply1 and ply2 would need to occasionalbet bust outs.Of course there are exceptions. GusHansen does not play a higher dimensionalgame than the other pros. Like in theSuperman comics his play is from a paralleluniverse. Gus plays in a birazzo dimension. The other pros don't understand his play.He takes them out of their comfort zone. Thus they are not able to optimize againstHansen. The goal is to raise our play to the nthdimension or at least a dimension higherthan our opponents. Where we know whatthey are doing, but they know not whatwe are doing.
