PokerStars launches HKD $1m buy-in Guangdong Asia Millions

PokerStars and the Guangdong Group (Macau) Ltd today announced the 'GuangDong Ltd Asia Millions' (GDAM) tournament, and tipped it to be the biggest poker tournament ever held outside of the World Series of Poker in terms of prize pool, and the largest ever high-roller event by number of players.

The GDAM tournament will run from June 4-7 and will take place in Macau at the 'PokerStars LIVE at the City of Dreams' poker room. It will feature a Main Event from June 5-7 with a buy-in of HKD $1,000,000 (USD $130,000) with two HKD $1,000,000 rebuys allowed. There will also be a HKD $250,000 (USD $32,500) Warm-up Event on June 4.

"This is going to be the one of the most amazing poker tournaments of all-time," said Danny McDonagh, Director of Live Poker Operations for the Asia Pacific for PokerStars. "We are expecting over 100 players to sit down and play and one of the biggest prize pools for a poker tournament outside of the World Series of Poker. It's going to be seriously huge! "

Biggest-ever tournament prize package

The field will comprise many Guangdong Group members, and limited seats are available to other players. PokerStars will also offer one player the chance to qualify for the GDAM event online. The prize package will be worth USD $132,000, and will be the biggest-ever tournament package given away on PokerStars.

The Guangdong Group (previously Neptune Group) organised a HKD $2,000,000 (USD $260,000) buy-in event held in Macau in August 2012, which saw 73 players take to the felt including Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, Gus Hansen, Sam Trickett and Patrik Antonius. On that occasion they competed for a prize pool of HKD $182,360,000 (USD $23,511,000). The first prize of HKD $50,149,000 (USD $6,465,746) was eventually won by Stanley Choi, instantly propelling him to 47th place in the All Time Money List. EPT Grand Final stirs up talk of €1 million buy-in cash game

by Brad Willis on May 2, 2013 10:40 AM

the largest festival of cash games in the tour's history. The EPT has worked hard to set up games for just about every bankroll. They've brought in extra tables, dealers, and staff to handle what is expected to be a big demand for cash games.

But a €1 million buy-in game? Well, yes, the EPT is ready for that, too.

There has been a rumble recently about this big game kicking off next week in Monaco. In fact, several people have already said they'd play if the game goes. Sam Trickett, Paul Newey, Philipp Gruissem, Isaac Haxton and Niklas Heinecker have all confirmed they're ready and willing to play. There are several others who prefer to remain anonymous for now.

Thanks Bob, obviously the GDAM is going to be a HUGE poker event. Pretty exciting over here in the Far East to run something that isn't just 'big for Asia' but BIG period.

FYI -- the PS online satellites (for those who don't have a loose US $130k kicking around) -- are under the not-that-well known 'Events' tab, then 'PSLive' then 'Macau'

I'm guessing that Fred is rooting for a Female Team Poker Stars Pro to win.

haha...I'm actually pretty good with compartmentalization. I've done this long enough that I don't really root for anyone, I just root for great stories more than anything.

With that being said, when I step out of work mode THEN it really hits me.

That was quite the huge bubble

Sorel Mizzi Leads Stacked GDAM Final Table

The GuangDong Ltd Asia Millions (GDAM) continued on Thursday and after a huge day of poker eight players had guaranteed themselves HK$6,000,000 (US$774,193) and Rono Lo had become the third largest “bubble boy” in history.

It is Sorel Mizzi who leads the GDAM final table and is therefore in the best shape to make a run at the HK$34,600,000 (US$4,464,516) first-place prize.

However, with not too many big blinds in play and tough players such as Isaac Haxton, Jeff Rossiter, Niklas Heinecker, Pratyush Buddiga and Igor Kurganov still in contention, the GDAM champion could be any of the eight remaining players.

Check out the official GDAM final table in the live reporting blog below.

Beginning at 3.00 p.m. local time, Day 2 of the GDAM Main Event saw 51 players all hoping to make it to the final table. Some of the players who weren’t able to do that include Philip Gruissem, Fabian Quoss, Joseph Cheong, John Juanda, Greg Merson, Gus Hansen, Mike McDonald and Team PokerStars Pros Bertrand Grospellier and Jonathan Duhamel.

For much of the day it was PokerStars Team Online Isaac Haxton who held the chip lead as he was eliminating players seemingly every few hands. One of the players Haxton sent to the rail was Dan Smith. It was preflop raising war that saw all the chips get in the middle, with Smith running his {a-Spades}{k-Clubs} into the {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} of Haxton. The board ran out {3-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{3-Hearts} and with that Smith was sent home and Haxton was the first player to find himself with an eight-figure chip stack.

One by one the players hit the rail and by the time ten players remained, the blinds were so large in comparison to the player’s stacks that every hand was a decision for a player’s tournament life. At this point the plan was to eliminate one more player before moving to an “unofficial” live streamed final table. Unfortunately for Nick Wong it was he who would finish as the 10th place finisher, which isn’t worth a whole lot.

Wong got all his chips in prefllop holding {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs} and had to come up against Aussie Jeff Rossiter’s {6-Hearts}{6-Clubs}. The board ran out {a-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{8-Spades} and just like that Wong, who took down the GDAM Warm-Up on Tuesday, was sent home and we were on the bubble.

Only one player would feel more devastation than Wong and that was Rono Lo. Heading into the unofficial final table Lo had the second smallest stack with just over 7 million in chips. However, with the blinds at 500,000-1,000,000, Lo quickly found himself left with just over one big blind when he moved all in holding {q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}. It was the worst possible outcome for Lo when Pratyush Buddiga woke up with {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}, which he promptly re-shoved from the button. The rest of the table was out of the way and the {5-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{6-Clubs} board meant that the GDAM final table was set. Check out the payout structure below to refresh yourselves with what the remaining eight are playing for.
