I Called In Sick Today

Recommended Posts

I've gotten lazy recapping my beer lately, so it's been shorter quips about what I've had. Here's my last five weeks or so:

Disney

Orlando Brewing - Blackwater Porter - 5.4% - 2nd best organic beer I've had, but that doesn't say much. Solid, standard take on a porter - B

Unibroue Trois Pistoles - 9% Belgian Strong Dark Ale - Delicious, especially when paired with the best steak I've ever had. A

Widmer Falconer's IPA - 7% - Best Widmer I've tried. Hoppy & floral IPA, very smooth. B+

Some shitty Full Sail IPA - Shitty.

Week of 10/14

Founder's Double Trouble - 9.4% Imperial/Double IPA - Probably a little old, so it lacked a little crispness, but still really good. Not boozy or bitter. B+

Widmer Nelson Imperial IPA - 8.6% - More up Widmer's alley. Bland, pilsnery IPA that lacks punch or taste. Also a little boozy. C

Hoppin' Frog Hop Heathen - 8.8% - Imperial Black Ale - Good, not great. More of a porter than an IPA. Roasted malts and such. B

Rodenbach Grand Cru - 6% - Flanders Red Ale (sour ale) - Jim favorite, but not my favorite style. Wild yeast makes it drinkably sour, but I don't love it. B-

Backlash - Conquest - 5.5% - Belgian IPA - 2nd best Backlash so far. Good take on Belgian IPA style, a nice mix of both. B

Clown Shoes - Flight of the Pimp 10% - Mix of Pimp and Blaecorn Unidragon, but I didn't like it as much as either one individually. B

Port Brewing - High Tide - 6.5% - Fresh hop, bottled 10/1. Really fresh, hoppy (I know, right?) and delicious. Super floral and citrusy. A-

Week of 10/21

Lagunitas - Brown Shugga - 9.9% - Strong ale, almost a barleywine, but so good. Hops to start, very malty middle, and a lil barrel-aged to end. A

Sixpoint - Sweet Action - 5.2% - Cream ale - Didn't impress me much. Not creamy enough. What some call balance, I think leads to blandness. C

Brash - Texas Exile - 10.5% - Coffee Imperial thing - Thick and syrupy, almost a mix of dark chocolate and coffee. Hides alcohol well. Pretty good. B+

Left Hand - Stranger - 5% - American Pale Ale - Great name, average beer. Bland pale ale without much hops, decent malt mix. C

Clown Shoes - Angry Beast - 11% - Mix of Blaecorn & Vampire Slayer. I enjoyed it, but had trouble picking characteristics out. Very black, very heavy. B+

Firestone Walker - Wookey Jack - 8.3% - Black Rye IPA - Really good, enjoyed more each sip. Hoppy, not too much rye, good black finish. A-

Grand Teton Brewing - Pursuit of Hoppiness - 8.5% - American Red Ale - No taste at first, like at all. Then after the swallow, BOOM hops. Complex sips, grew on me quickly. B

Hoppin' Frog - Belgian Style Double IPA - 8.5% - Unfiltered creamy goodness. Very buttery, but with hops at the end. A pleasure to consume. A-

Dark Horse Brewing - Special Reserve Black Ale - 7.5% - Very thick, no head, but tan lacing on the top of the pour. Unfiltered too, but drinkable. Aged a little, which is good. B

Ipswich Brewery -21st Anniversary Imperial Dark Ale - 8% - Very dark/malty ale, extremely unfiltered. This is the second year in a row we've tried the Anniversary beer, and both were much better than most of their 12 oz offerings. It was tasty and not as heavy as it looked, but left a nice satisfied mouthfeel. I'd like to see more dark ales that aren't "black," but just dark.

Southern Tier - Krampus - 9% Imperial Pilsner (or Helles Lager) - Pretty bland, standard imperial pilsner. This was a year old, I believe, and may have lost whatever initial hops and crispness it once had. The alcohol was well hidden, but then again, so was any sort of good taste.

Ommegang - Three Philosophers - 9.8% Quadrupel - A really nice quadrupel, pours a dark red/malty brown color, which is unexpected. Lots of nice caramel and malt tastes, with nice warming alcohol finish. Maybe a few tart flavors, but nothing like a lot of tripels that are out there. A pleasant surprise for a style I don't try too often.

Clown Shoes - Genghis Pecan - 7% Porter - Had high hops for this, as both Brad and my memories of their Pecan Pie Porter were exceptional. Unfortunately, this is a below-average porter. No nutty taste or smell. No reassuring sweet finish. Just an empty porter that dies off in taste as the sip goes down. Possibly the least impressive Clown Shoes I've had.

Clown Shoes - Porcine Unidragon - 12.5% Smoked beer/Stout - This one, on the other hand, was delicious. It's Blaecorn Unidragon made with Beechwood smoked malt, and then aged in bourbon barrels. I don't usually love the bourbon barrel thing, but this one hit the god damn spot. The alcohol is also disturbingly un-present for something this strong. It starts out like a like Russian imperial stout, but then the sweet bourbon taste takes over and rolls around your tongue for a bit, and I think there was also another level on the finish, but I can't remember. Another complaint with some other smoke beers is just that they're too smokey, but this one keeps a nice bacon-y smoke taste in the beginning, but nothing overpowering or gross. Really enjoyed it.

Sierra Nevada - 2012 Northern Hemisphere - 6.7% Wet hopped IPA - The freshness and "wetness" of the hops blew me away on this one. Citursy, piney, and floral, it was a hop explosion in the good way. Not very bitter, but just that delicious hop taste invading every taste bud and probably killing your palatte for a few hours. At $6.75, buy it soon before the hops start to fade.

Sierra Nevada - Narwhal - 10.2% Imperial Stout - One of the few imperial stouts done by Sierra (have they done another one? I'm not sure) this poured very, very thick. A bit chocolately, a lot of malt, a very slight hop-backbone that keeps it a little lighter tasting it seems. This one took a good 45 minutes to drink and enjoy. Alcohol presence was noticeable but not overpowering, but the main characteristic for me was definitely the viscosity. A good beer I'll have again.

North Coast Brewery - Andy bought Brad a bunch of singles for his birthday, a lot from North Coast Brewery. I don't think I tried this creepy looking Red Seal beer. We did try a Green Flash - Double Stout after the concert on Sunday, but I wasn't in a good position to report on it. Seriously, this seal:

:brand-RedSeal.jpg

Mayflower Thanksgiving Ale - 8% American Strong Ale - I had bought this, and Andy also got a bomber of it. Was a bit disappointing. Usually Mayflower is very strong in dark and wintrybeers (Autumn Wheat, the regular Porter) but the Thanksgiving lacked any sort of spice, no hops, and kind of turned into just a regular dark ale. Liked the Ipswich a lot more. I still have another bomber, so I can hope my opinion will change, but this left me wanting from a brewery I usually enjoy.

Sam Adams White Christmas Ale - 5.8% Basically just a reboot of their White Ale. Maybe an extra nutmeggy spice or two, but I really thought it was close to identical to the original, and just a way to let them continue to brew it even though it isn't their spring seasonal anymore. A decent addition to the Winter Mix Pack, its certainly better than Cranberry Lambic or Sam Light. Old Fezziweg let me down a bit on my first tasting this year, not nearly as spicy as I recall. Holiday Porter and Chocolate Bock were the stars for me on my first winter mix pack walk through of 2012.

Stone - LukCy 13asartd Ale - 8.5% American Strong Ale - I didn't know this while drinking it, but its apparently a blend of the regular, oaked and double Bastards, and was done as a 13th anniversary ale. For some reason, nearly every word on the bottle is spelled wrong, and since Stone's explanations, while endearing, are about as long as my average weekend beer review, and I can't be expected to read every one. Anyways, this beer was fantastic, definitely my favorite Bastard. The blend ended up tasting like an imperial red ale, but with a little more of that Stone IPA-bite. It had a nice creamy finish to it as well. Where most of the other bastards are over-powering in one aspect (regular is bitter hops, oaked is...oak), Lukcy has a great mix of everything I like about the other styles. Every sip was a treat, and happiness turned to sadness as the pint glass became ever more devoid of delicious red liquid. I'll have to get this again.

Stone - Double Bastard - 11.2% American Strong Ale - After the Lukcy, this was a bit of a disappointment, but then again, just about anything would be. The name is pretty spot on, as far as signifying taste; it's just everything about Arrogant Bastard amped up a few a levels. Strong alcohol presence, but not in an imperial way; there's just a lot of booze here, but it's pretty drinkable. The bitter hops are balanced out with some malt, so you don't get a terrible finish. A good beer, but nowhere near as tasty as the Lukcy.

and after 3 days, he is risen!

If you are paying $20 for a haircut, I imagine people assume you did it yourself anyway.

Pocket change cost me my first and only black girlfriend.   It was in the middle of a roaring poker boom and I was flush in ways most men don't even bother dreaming of. Money, it was like dirt to me

So last Tuesday I put in an app on a rental house. Last night I found out the owner decided not to rent to someone with dogs. (WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO KNOW THAT A WEEK AGO MOTHERF'ER) Despite the fact that their listing said pets were ok and the listing agent said it wouldn't be a problem. Soooo...I'm taking off work early tomorrow to look at 3 more houses (that have already cleared the dogs) and will probably spend my weekend doing the same. I fly home Sat the 17th. It would be nice to have a house to bring the wife and kids back to. And to end this dry spell I'm in. I don't know how you womanless guys do it.

I doubt I'll ever even see any of those beers. they don't carry that kind of fancy stuff in ole' virginnny. thems for them faggot librals!

though I'm probably driving into the big city next weekend for a haircut and some other fancy stuff, so I'll probably go by whole foods. maybe I'll take a list, see if they have any. gotta stick to the <8%ers though. anything higher than that and I just get too tipsy. get a little handsy you know. any recommendations for me? lower alcohol, lager/ale type things (no pale ales, stouts), available at whole foods...?

I've never understood the whole "ooohmygod I've gotta have sex ahhh!" thing. seriously? is it really that bad? I mean I get hornier than normal sometimes I guess but I don't think I've ever thought/said "oh my god I have to get laid" or anything like that. maybe I have low testosterone or something. maybe that's one of the reasons women don't like me, hell I don't know. I'd ask if I'm alone here but I know napa and suited will agree with me and everybody else will disagree so let's just leave it at that shall we?

the wire complete series is $95 on amazon. probably gonna finally pull the trigger on that today.

huh. maybe I will, beans. maybe I will.

been thinking about making a doctors appointment here for some other random crap. wonder what I'd say if I brought that up, saying the name brand and all? my regular doctor would probably laugh at me and tell me to leave (same guy who after the second visit of me complaining that I haven't slept in several days told me to go to sleep later and that there was nothing he could do).

OH! beans, glad your here. this is a long shot, but do you know of any type of backpack attachment (molle/alice type clip system is what I'm thinking) that you can use to strap a rifle (regular rifle, not ar) to a backpack with? I'm buying this for shooting, and I'd like to be able to use those side loops to somehow strap my 30-06 to the side so I don't have to carry it into the woods. all I can find is full size scabbards and cases.

Yeah, you may have a problem getting a script from that guy... still being in your thirties wont help, either

Im sure there are ways to get your numbers lower for a blood test.... youd probably have to be in the low two hundred range before getting a needle and vial

There are some sort of newfangled witch doctors out there that hand them out like candy.... anti-aging clinics or something like

Its still sorta a pain in the ass though...literally.... doc has been good as gold but the pharmabastards have given me grief every refill. Cant fill them one day earlier than twenty eight days after the last one.... treat ya like a junkie about needles, etc. Much easier to get pain pills for some reason or another

Anyhoo, I cant figure out a good way either.... although I promise that a rifle on one side of a backpack will get miserable quick from the constant pull down on that side. It really needs to be centered on the pack. Maybe a nylon sling with a cinch ring placed around the top and bottom to tighten the rifle vertically at the back of the pack?

Back when Arkiesaw decided to curb roadhunting by requiring all rifles to be enclosed in a case while transporting, I cut the top out of a soft side case for the scope to stick out and cut the muzzle end off so it could be shot inside the case...

First game warden that saw it said "Well...there goes that rule"

Maybe make a "rifle holster" similar to a shoulder holster and cinch it to the pack?

I dunno.... Id just throw a ten inch ruger four four mag in and zip it up

well huh, looks like I'll have to get my steroids the old fashioned way. oh well.

and yeah, the cinch lashing straps seem to be the only way I could find. you'd think they'd make something just for this but I guess not. and I hear you on the lopsided distribution part. think I'll probably be strapping an axe to the other side though so that should even it out.

probably going to a gun show in january. good chance they'll have something there. I'll post it if I do find anything.

Loogie are you related to the guy in Indiana that lost to the guy who eventually lost and people seem pissed?

I thought I remember you campaigning for somebody, but I thought it was your brother and I'm pretty sure this guy was old.

I'm not closely related to Dick who lost to Mourdock in the primary. There are two main families in the Indy area with my last name, and I'm in the other one. Also in the other one is my brother who ran for the House of Reps this year and lost in the primary. Probably not the best year to run in Indiana with that last name.

I'll try to think of something, but if you're looking for extra expensive beer that just tastes like Budweiser, I don't know what to tell you. Sam Adams Boston Lager is a good place to start for new beer people. Maybe grab a mix pack, try out a bunch of different things. The Winter Mix has 6 different beers, so only two of each style. I'm telling you, Chocolate Bock is delicious.

Saw hoppin frog at the liquor stores and the bombers were like 15 bucks ea. I don't think I'm ready to pay that...

They go for about $12 here right now, which is at the very top of my range. I've slowly adjusted my mindset to "$9.99 isn't a big deal!" even though it's an absurd price that grosses me out when I think about it for too long. I'll go to $12 for a select few choices, but I usually keep it under $10.

you son of a bitch I'm not a new beer person how dare you!

but seriously, no, I've been drinking fancy shit (rogue, stone, corsendonk, etc) since I was 18, I just haven't been very into it lately so I don't know what's out now that's good.

Just saw a lady at school that had a body that just wouldn't quit. My brvy that ass was spectacular.

Shake you were right about what you said before when you said me and nappy would agree with you.

Currently pooping, nothing to say really. Had some yogurt with granola and strawberries for breakfast. Which was tasty and semi-healthy.

Planning on taking a nap after this next class. Should be a long and good nap.

Not sure what I will eat for dinner yet. Maye some chicken?

Poops almost over so I'll say goodbye.

Goodbye.

How tall are you Strat?

We can all agree that I'd be the fav in a sickie cage match not including Ron Mexico, right? Not even worth debating really. I think JJJ would be a dark horse though and would probably be the best value bet and would certainly get my money. Randy woulda been a contender in the day, but now he's old and fragile even though he could just run around the ring forever. Beans is interesting because he's crafty, but he's also on performance enhancing drugs and if he stopped he'd just be mopey but on them he'd be to busy chasing the round girl around the ring with a hard on. Strat, Shake, Suited...yeah, sorry brajs. Just don't see you guys as being a challenge.

So it's settled then. Good chat.

Edit: Theraflu...you're also of a small stature. Guap has to many injuries to be effective but I'm sure he was the cage fighting champion of his high school as a 7th grader or something.

I am 5'10" or 11. Tall enough for it to not be a liability with the ladies, but not tall enough for things to be annoying.

You would crush me, I haven't worked at the greenhouse in like a full season + starvation diet. There's just not much left and the picture wasn't pretty to begin with.

Really enjoy the prosecutor's shorthand version

Adoboli is charged with fraud and false accounting. He was arrested after writing what prosecutors dubbed “the bombshell e-mail” on Sept. 14, 2011, explaining his off-book trading to an accountant and several of his managers at the bank.

“None of the defenses which Mr. Adoboli now relies on were mentioned in his e-mail,” Wass said. “Instead he says in effect, ‘Listen chaps, I fiddled the books and this is how I got away with it, thanks, Kweku.’”

I thanks pretty much every email but I don't think I'm thanksing that one ever

Hey Beans, glad you're not dead. Shitter backed up again two nights ago. Went and bought a power auger/snake from Harbor Freight for like $200. Figure that Chinese piece of crap will do the job at least a few times before it burns up.

But for the long term I ether have roots in the drain or, I dropped a broken half of a toilet flange in the their about 6 months ago, not sure if that could be the issue. Either way, something is backing me up after the cleanout. 2 quetions.

1. How much should I expect to pay for someone to camera it?

2. Didn't you develop some sort of trench less sleeve thingy? Those expensive? I really don't want to dig up my front yard.

No rush, because I am going to keep snaking that ****** now that I dropped 2 bills on the auger.

the good thing for shake in a zombie apocalypse scenario is that he's already out in the country. most of the rest of us would need to battle our way out of the cities and into the country, where shake's of every kind will be waiting to pick us off.
