Normally when you see someone cold call a 3bet they have QQ/JJ and sometimes TT. That range isn't looking good for you on that flop.I would probably check flop, and depending on villian I might shove or call or fold if he bets. Betting flop probably isn't horrible, but when he calls I think he has QQ or TT and I shut down.Definitely check turn and try and get to showdown as cheap as possible. Mark

Hero?
Bet $5. He'll tell you what to do next .... I don't stay if he raises. If he calls the turn, you are probably looking for a J, but I doubt you get paid if you hit it. A jack is the only river card I bet and I only pay off a thin value bet on the river.

If you're going to bet, you have to at least bet 6.5ish. Betting less than 1/2 the pot here is just asking to be raised by anything he holds.

At these limits, many players are calling here with like any pair and even some other stupider hands. Even at 1/2 people will call you with pocket 7s to set mine while getting no odds to do so.I think firing the flop is good. I check the turn to control the pot and because it's hard for him to call you with worse hands anymore.

I don't understand this whole pot control thing.-Zach686868686

Thanks everyone. Mark articulated what I already knew - that I needed to shut down. When he called the 3bet I was wary and started thinking QQ, JJ, TT - even KK or AA since the original raiser was still to act. After the flop call, given that he had never called my CB before, it should have been crystal clear that I was behind. This year, as I've read a lot of hand analysis on FCP, I've started to internalize estimating hand ranges, evaluating what has you beat, when to shut down. My leak is having the discipline to set aside the ego and just let the pot go. I hope this hand is a turning point for me. I was doing the correct analysis. I just didnt translate it into a smarter play. Instead of shutting down and picking a better spot, I overbet and he called with...KJo for the straight. The results-oriented part of me says KJ WFT!?!? The longer-term, make-good-decisions part of me wants to have this discussion, admit how I made the situation worse, and improve for next time. I appreciate all the analysis and options for different lines on the hand.

He had more than twice as many outs as you did. JK. . . . :club: Anyway, shutting down vs. double and triple barreling is one of the stickier spots in the game for me. There truly are SO SO many pots that are available when double and triple barreling, but it can suck when you run into a hand or get a couple calldowns in a row.

ATCYou mention having raised / C-bet a lot. Sometimes you just get tired of being bullied.
Possibly. Understanding how I'm perceived is valuable and it would actually be helpful to get a read on what is considered LAG play at a shorthanded table. My focus for this thread was more on playing out the hand because even if his call was loose, my postflop error was bigger (and more costly).

I wouldn't overbet the turn but i don't think betting it is really an error.I know someone's going to pop up and repeat the old catch phrase "What calls us that we beat?" but the very fact that he overcalled with KJo in the first place shows us that people will call with a tonne of worse hands, just because we wouldn't and they shouldn't doesn't mean they won't.I'm not saying that you should bet this turn or anything, but i really don't think it's that big a deal, and i'm really suprised mark would check the flop here aswell.
