playing with greg raymer tomorrow

Recommended Posts

Hi all.I'm playing in the Oxford Cup (UK) this sunday, and as a special bonus i've managed to get a seat at a one-off tournament with Greg Raymer tomorrow. 60 players total with some sort of bounty on Greg I would imagine.I've been playing fairly low stakes NL poker live and online for the past 6 months. I'd say I was a decent player online, I generally win more than I lose and i've seen every episode of the WPT, but this is the first live multi table tournament i've ever played. And obviously the first one with pros involved. Tomorrow's game is a 60 player freeroll and Sunday's game is £20 NL rebuy tourney with 250 players and a lot more pros involved.Any tips for me against Greg? What is his poker style? Any tips in general for a real amateur playing against the pros?Cheers, Mr B.

Wow... like $30 to play against 250 players including pros. That's nutty. I gotta move out to merry ole England. And a 60 player freeroll??? May I ask how the heck you find something like that?Seems to me that over on this side of the pond any $30 buy-in event with pros involved would bring out well over 500 players easy... but that's just a guess.Greg's generally considered to be a pretty poor player (WSOP I think was his only win, although I definitely could be mistaken). But, tips in general for amateur playing against the pros... don't get involved in pots with them unless you've got the goods. They are more likely not to bluff against an amateur who's style they don't know.... and also more likely to look you up once or twice to get a good read.

Not sure how i managed to get a seat for the freeroll... a friend of a friend of the organiser got me in. I didn't have to sleep with anyone or anything! There are only 250 players because the venue is not big enough to hold any more. Unlike the good ole US of A we dont have super casinos in the UK or even many casinos with card rooms. I think the event is being held in a hotel.Looks like The Hendon Mob and Dave "Devilfish" Ulliot may be coming aswell.

Well... if you and Absolute disagree, please explain. As far as I can tell, aside from WSOP Greg hasn't done jack$hit. I'm sure he's a decent player in his own right and in the cash games he plays in, but my impression from discussions I've had with a few pro's and amateurs who have played with him in other tourney style games is that he simply isn't that great. At least if I'm gonna disagree with ya, I'm gonna explain why. I'm not gonna pull some childish Absolute flaming BS.

as far as i understand, he absolutely killed the 150-300 games at foxwoods before winning the world series. that in and of itself makes him a sound player. i just don't understand why everyone knocks his play during the world series...

I think people get confused about guys like Raymer. In my opinion, he's nowhere near Farha, DN, Chan etc. You could say he sucks in comparison, but he's going to rip Joe Internet a new one. Yeah, he's never duplicated his big win, but he's cashed in 2 WPT events this year. Just being there makes him worthy of respect. Rip on him all you want, but show me what you've done that compares.

I'd put Raymer ahead of SammySammy plays way too many hands

It's pretty well known and documented that Greg does very well for himself in cash games. He has been making good showings at most tournaments he enters.I don't think he is as good as Josh Arieh from that final table, or Dan Harrington. But he is certain as good as, if not better than, David Williams. If you are more interested, check out his posts on 2+2, he is a carpal tunnel member there, and is very knowledgable on all forms of poker.

for all of you who have said that Greg is a poor poker player, GET YOUR HEADS OUT OF YOUR ASSES AND GO BACK TO GEN POP. Okay, Greg is an excellent player. He has won a Seven card stud tourny at foxwoods and placed third in teh Foxwoods World Poker Finals Main Event in 2001. Scotty Ngyuen won that tourny. Greg also placed i the top thirty at this year's WPT championship. He has also provided some of the best posts in the 2+2 tournaments section, many have said that his advice has propelled their games to a much higher level. How's about all you you moneymaker marks get your facts straight before you even try saying that greg is a poor player

Fiar enough, point taken. Although I never said Greg was a poor player (assuming it was me you were attacking), it is just what I had heard. I have no idea how good or otherwise he is, never met him, never seen him play. Hence why I asked for advice when playing him tomorrow.Anyway I'll let you know how i get on. Although i'll probably get star struck and do something stupid like making a pass at him... we shall see if i can control myself.Mr B.

I was just aiming my bile at any of those who think it, I wasn't aiming it at you in particular Bellamy. I just get annoyed at those who say he sucks and try to say that Moneymaker is better, ya know. Greg kills the high stakes games he normally plays in. He is an excellent player, is he as good as some of the real top pros, no, but he is very very dangerous. If you sit at his table tread lightly against him as he will raise with a big variety of hands. He is very good at reading players, so just remain calm and you'll do fine. BTW, where in merry olde england you from. I'm a big football and rugby fan, so I love talkin it with those from my favorite country outside of the states. cheers

Originally from Northampton, now living and studying in Bath (good rugby team) and soon to be moving back to my true home London to start work. My studying days are finally coming to an end!I'm a shameless Manchester United fan, but I was born in Manchester so i'm allowed to be. The first game I went to I was still in my mother's belly, how's that for dedicated? Got a favourite team?

Yes a fellow devil on the board. Now I won't pretend that I was supporting the team in the Paul McGrath/ Norman Whiteside days, but I am faithful to them. I know that if we got sent down(heaven forbid. don't want to see a 74 in my lifetime) I'd support them. If we started playing mid-table football I'd support them. I chose my team and nothing's changing that. As far as Bath goes, man I don't understand why Ollie Barclay isn't playing fly-half for england and charlie hodgsen is in Wilko's absence. Barclay is a much btter kicker and I think he controls the game much better

Soccer talk. The OP hi-jacked his own thread and changed to soccer. KD is also in England and soccer being the American equivalent of the NFL, it garners quite a bit of discussion among our friends across the pond. By the way, isn't Manchester a possible buy-out candidate for being purchased by someone from the U.S.? Thought I'd heard that somewhere.

He's "only" won the 2004 WSOP main event. You talk about it like it was a cakewalk. Not exactly an easy tournament to win.

Yup, very wealthy chap named Malcom Glazer wants to buy the club but the fans are resisting the takeover fiercly. Personally I dont mind either way...Just played the freeroll tournament with Greg Raymer today. What a nice chap he is. Day started off with an entertaining and eduactional lecture by the fossilman where he mainly discussed NL holden strategy and shamelessly promoted pokerstars.com. Throughout the lecture he was playing a $2/$4 cash table on pokerstars.com on the big screen and giving a commentry of his decisions which was great. Managed to bag himself $14 during the lecture... he must be well chuffed!Spent the rest of the day playing heads up with him and other fellow poker pros. When I left Greg had won 8 of 11 matches which is pretty impressive although he was knocked out quite early in the multi table freeroll by a friend of mine despite his scarey lizard eyes glasses... I played well but didnt get much luck and finished 20th out of 80. Thoroughly enjoyable day and great to meet the big man.The big tournament is tomorrow. Whilst I sit here alone in my flat preparing, my friends are out preparing by consuming vast amounts of alcohol at some Oxford Uni party. We'll see how they fare tomorrow :)Easy, Mr B.

personally I do mind Glazer trying to buy them up. I feel that he has no love for Man U and won't do for Man U what Abrabovich did for chelsea. I worry about chelsea too as what will hasppen when Roman is done with his play toy? They'll be in worse shape than when Ken Bates left em. I'm a very small member of shareholders Utd, as I feel that they do have the best intrests of the club. I really do wish, even though he caused some disharmony with Sir Alex, that somehow Martin Edwards would come back and buy his family's club
